I started joining theater and performance arts classes and I'm placed in Alto. At first, I was fine. I kept in mind that "The teacher knows what he's doing. I'm meant to be placed here.". Then we started our rehearsals for a graded performance next month. And good lawd, I will just almost not sing at all coz of the low damn notes. I was fine for a few days but now, it's been weeks and I feel awful. haha. like, I'm not doing anything at all. I am crushed. Also, ALL the amazing solo parts were IMMEDIATELY given individually to the sopranos. Not even a "Hey, anyone wanna try these lines?". There's an entire stanza there that could be offered to us. But noooo. And there are individual performances too, ALL FOR THE SOPRANOS. and they're disney songs. Altos will sing as a group. Yep. I will have this song on repeat. I need the spirit of teamwork and sportsmanship to just envelop me coz as of now, I feel neglected. hahahaha.

You are incredible, in voice (not just an alto!) and performance as a whole! As an alto, all I can remember is singing Mariah Carrie's All I want for Christmas is You; they didn't even give the altos the words and just had us hold "And I". Now my low range is on a strictly need-to-know basis! To add: for altos who want the melody, try Russian Orthodox church music. It was all written for groups with few options for singers, so the altos get the melody simply because there weren't enough sopranos available, and they've all been translated into English of course.

This is very relatable. Every baritone I know (including myself) feels the same way. If you're not a tenor, you're not gonna be the lead. Either way, this is hilarious and very well done! You have an amazing voice!

Sweeney todd, it's a great musical for low voices. Hunchback of Notre dame, also good for low singers, (and tenors, because I'm an evil tenor Ooga booga.) And finally, any villain role, any old musical roles (baritones are everywhere there.) And obviously focus on BARITONE songs, you're not a bass if you're a baritone.
@jamiehood8502 жыл бұрын
@@gamer5101 Those are all great shows, but I can only speak for myself here, but I unfortunately don't fit any of them. My speaking voice is actually quite high, and I don't fit traditional leading men or super masculine characters too well. My casting type definitely lines up more with tenor roles usually. I had a music director all throughout school that always emphasized to me that I would never be deserving of a lead because my voice was too low, and a voice teacher recently told me that it's caused me to have this built up shame around singing

I must say, even as a soprano, the alto parts in classical music are very exciting. In choirs especially. They often get really, really beautiful, velvety harmonies and even take the lead sometimes. I could never be an Alto, but man, I do love listening to them practice.
@DanielSchuman-vk9cwАй бұрын
That’s lovely you like them but as a alto my self it can be a bit sad or boring when your singing the same note over and over and sopranos get all these beautiful notes and melody’s
@flowerdolphin5648Ай бұрын
@DanielSchuman-vk9cw you're singing the wrong music then xD our altos get amaaaaazing melodies that are often even more musically complex than the soprano parts, especially in simple church music where we often get a simple, straightforward Cantus Firmus and the altos, tenors and basses get the fun stuff that adds dynamics and color.

As a teenager in my high school choir, I got moved from the alto section (where I was because no one else there could carry a tune) to the soprano section because they didn't have enough sopranos, and it was the best thing that ever happened to me.

This is my life summed up.😭I always end up singing the tenor roles when duetting with my mezzo friend…the joys of being an alto!
@professorrock46982 жыл бұрын
Tenor parts actually do have melodies sometimes though! I get put in tenor often because there are not enough guys, and tenor will sometimes follow the soprano in melody - it's rather fun to sing. Plus it has actual low notes rather than staying on like Eb. At my school basically only the highest and lightest of sopranos get to sing soprano every time, everyone else is taking turns on alto as well (if sop) and tenor as well (if alto/mezzo), with a few people as designated "usually sings tenor" like me (I guess because of ability to handle learning the music when only a few other people are singing with you?)
@Erizou903 жыл бұрын
My lament exactly. If you have a high c you're not an alto, but those beautiful voices are so rare to find, so they put any ol' soprano/mezzo who has lower notes into alto, perpetually doomed to feel out of place.
@jacobbissey93113 жыл бұрын
As someone who's probably a baritone but was put in bass because I actually could hit the low notes (and identified as bass until like a week ago when I found a video that explained how voice types *should* be identified, and spoiler, it ain't range) I feel this even more than I felt Pachelbel Rant by Rob Paravonian, since his problem with cello was solved by playing a different instrument, but I'm never gonna suddenly be a tenor. There should be a musical with lead roles cast for altos and baritones/basses instead of the usual sopranos and tenors.
@drac36503 жыл бұрын
Same, soon as people find out you can hold an E... I will say, if you're willing to switch genres opera is quite kind to the lower registers since pretty much all opera buffa main roles require low notes.

HA! Yeah that’s a mood. Back when I was a teenager and could sing soprano I asked my teacher to switch me from alto. Dunno why they never just write alto main parts in the first place. I need a STUDIO VERSION OF THIS! You KILLED IT! I found this video absolutely randomly like four years ago and I keep coming back to it because it's amazing how great this was. And it breaks my heart that when I go to your channel there's so little music there- I mean it's all music, there's just not much to be had. It's totally and completely selfish, but I'm stuck in this place where I want to hear more of your work and there's almost none to be had. You're you, and you have a life, and if you don't post a million covers and originals because you're not interested in it then it's not your problem to cater to some rando on the web. So I guess what I want to say out of all of this is... Just know that you are appreciated and loved and this guy will keep coming back to hear you sing Alto's Lament as the years go on and on.

In the choirs and shows I've been in, it was the sopranos who were limited to a mid-high range and could only manage to follow the melody. The girls singing alto could easily be sopranos too, they just had an actual range and could hold a counter-tune, so we got made altos by default! (And sometimes, in a pinch, tenors).

🤣🤣🤣 I started as an alto prior to voice training in my teens. I loved singing soprano (my voice teachers suggested I switch parts when I was 16 after they saw how quickly my range extended with training) but I HATED the soprano parts in the musicals my school did! They were all super prissy. I wanted rolls like Fantine, not Cosette, so I never got cast for a lead (I LOOOOOVED being in the ensemble at least). I had the range; wish my teachers didn't brush me off when I asked to work on my bottom notes. I feel like I'm the only former theatre kid that had the opposite envy here. 😂

Love your voice and this performance ♥️! I’m not sure what my true voice range is. Being a member of a regular church choir, I help harmonize by doing both the alto and descant parts because the Altos and the Sopranos have difficulties getting the right notes. For our hymns, we do unison (melody) in the first verse, then I do Alto on the second verse, then descant on the third verse.

I feel you on this. I love the mezzo voice and the warm alto, but alas, I don’t have one. Sometimes they’ll let you sing second soprano with the fun, weird notes in true multi-part music (though in less-multi-part music, it’s just that you don’t get the exhilarating soaring note at the end). But for sopranos it’s generally all melody, all the time.
