@@spyfalls_ Actually, the computer system told the operator that there's a stuck train on the track. It didn't let the second train go. The operator had to manually override the system in order to get it moving, and then the crash happened. The problem was that there was five trains on the track at that time, and the operator hadn't been told that there was the one extra train. He saw all four trains as expected and then did an override. Of course he could have checked the block section where the system was telling him where the cart is stuck, that's half of what went wrong. The other half is that the operator hadn't been told of the fifth train

Holly Anne it was LITERALLY the operator and maintenances fault. they were running the coaster is 42 mph winds when the ride shouldn’t have been running in 30mph max, maintenance put a 5th train on the track without telling operators, maintenance test ran the new train without water dummies, the train couldn’t make it over a hill and rolled back due to high winds, when the train with people got to a block THE RIDES SYSTEM stopped the train and alerted operators that the block was occupied, operators ignored the warning and manually sent the train along anyway without confirming the location of all trains. things didnt “go wrong” the park, the operators, and the maintenance made MULTIPLE MISTAKES leading to this. it was entirely on the people and not the ride itself. this COULD HAVE BEEN STOPPED if they actually did their jobs correctly

The only reason this happened is because the operators didn’t tell maintenance they added a fifth car and the safety system stopped the full car because the empty one was stuck because maintenance didn’t know about the stuck fifth car they released the full car and the then collided after the empty car didn’t make the loop due to the high winds I hope this helped explain

okay so i just got the whole story let me explain. here is the source - www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/alton-towers-smiler-rollercoaster-crash-8897449 1) the smiler was operating at winds of 46 mph which exceeds the limit of 34 mph. 2) the ride had indicated a fault and was shut down, engineers made their way over. 3) the staff said that while the ride was down they should add a fifth cart. 4) they sent the first train up the car which got stuck on the incline lift, engineers fixed that problem. 5) they prepared the ride to let people back on. 6) a second empty car went around the track but got stuck on a loop. 7) the car with passengers got to the top of the incline lift but stopped due to an error. now due to a communication error the engineers did not know about the fifth train. 8) engineers count four trains not knowing about the fifth. 9) they send the train through the circuit for it to crash into the empty cart. i hope this helped.

@@finlayclarke2640 Since I wrote this comment I actually know a bit more about this accident and afaik you're right, it is 100% operator fault (as in: the park and it's organisation) but not THE operator's fault (as in: person operating the ride). Apart from the fact that there was a failure in communications, the ride operators should never have been allowed to have the key that was able to clear block zone's manually. This key was supposed to only be in the possession of people with higher functions/responsibility/education. All in all very tragic, but I find it important to clarify that there is nothing wrong with Gerstlauer's coasters and their safety.

The operators didn’t tell the engineers that had a fifth car on the track, so when the engineers set the car free of the restraints holding it from being on the same area as the empty car, they had only logged the location of the four others. this accident was therefore partly technical error in the empty cars inability to return but mostly human error where miscommunication and investigation where definite not clear. if the operators had told the engineers about the fifth car, they wouldn’t have released the passenger car. somehow the operators didn’t realise that the fifth car hadn’t returned. although, this could have still been prevented if the engineers had investigated the track itself instead of relying on the position of the other cats, as there could have been something else out of place.

I hate that this happened, I always get so upset when it's situations where people are going out for some fun and it ends up crippling them or killing them it's just so tragic. I've heard it was human error, to do with people setting the ride off to early.

imagine sitting on the side knowing what's about to happen and being in such horror screaming at the operator to stop but the moment you see it move from the top of that lift hill you know its game over and just look away 20-30 seconds later you hear a crash and screams you turn back around to realise many people are unconscious wishing you could help you rush to the station but there's nothing you can do the moment the humanised car moved there was no going back Must of been scary

4 trains? That's too many trains for a coaster that size. Even the big one in Blackpool pleasure Beach doesn't use 4 trains and it's bigger. And they never send a train out until the first one has returned into the brake blocks out side the station

The Big One isn't even that much bigger but it has less block sections than the Smiler so 4 trains is completely justified.

Shocking..my niece's were only showing me a video of this last month as this was a fav ride of theirs when they went... my daughter I think went on every ride at Thorpe park yesterday ...but they don't crash do they....as some will say,there have been a few in UK past few years and Iam sure someone of this ride had legs amputated afterwards

I was on it when it crashed , my leg had broken in 4 different places and my arm was trapped in the other carriage and my other leg was cut open

looks like 50 people "reportedly" was on that train. i dont know how that would be possible though as each car only sits 16 people.

The smiler was the best when I went on it and then I saw the bit where they had a crash I was very scared but it was still amazing AND I THINK NEMISIS AND TH13TEEN IS WAY BETTER THAN THE SMILER SOZZ
