I'm an old geezer who loves my Altras. I have owned 11 pairs over the years. I do very little running these days but I average 5 miles/day hiking. Right now my favorite (this far) is the Olympus 4. My old feet appreciate the the extra cushion. When the snow is deep I wear the Lone Peak mid height hiker. Last winter over 100 miles snowshoeing.The outer sole is even forgiving to my recreational snowshoes. Altras are the best trail skies I've ever owned.

Great video, James! Hard to believe you have so many miles on the MB! My current favorite shoe is the Superior 5! The upper is softer and the fit is better than the 4.5! The midsole is a tad bit softer too. I think it's the same midsole compound but holding both shoes you can tell it's softer. I just recently decided I'm going to start my upcoming 50-miler in them. Bought the MB for this race but they just don't have the flexibility, lockdown, and responsiveness of the superior. I am biased though since I run mostly in barefoot shoes!

Fantastic overview video james. Like you I’ve been a big fan of the lone peaks. I originally tried the lp 4’s but jumped to inov-8’s terraultra g 270 as they mentioned having a wide toe box…Unfortunately not like altra’s though! I the watched your video about the lone peak all WTHR. They were superb, especially for places like the Lake District. They had to 400/500 miles before falling to bits. I’m currently using the lp 6’s. They’re fantastic also, but longevity the all wthr’s are winning. They do dry very quickly though. This video has tempted me to try the olympus range now 👍🏻

James. The inov8 Terraultra G 270 is zero drop and is supposedly on inov8's widest last. I've been tempted to dive in as I don't get the magic of the Lone Peak that others do but love most of the Altra road shoes. I have my eye on the outroad as canal toe paths are my closest "trails"

I can't bring myself to invest in the Superior even though it is very interesting to me, it just seems dated. I'm also one of the Altra people that does enjoy the Rivera which the Outroad is apparently based on.
@Dan_South2 жыл бұрын
@@SpikeBrookes87 outdated in terms of the shoe market, yes. I think the superior is functionally still relevant. The more built up the shoe is the more potential of it affecting your gate and footstrike. I wear barefoot shoes often for foot strength and better movement mechanics and the superior impedes on this two variables a lot less than, say the Olympus - which I love too. It's nice to have all ranges. My trail shoes range from 7mm stack to 33mm 😄
@SpikeBrookes872 жыл бұрын
@@Dan_South the Superior interests me for similar reasons. For instance basically all my casual shoes are Vivobarefoot and even ran in them a bit. One of the things I don't like about the Lone Peak 5 is that it feels very firm for its stack height. Back to the Superior I also don't relish the idea of needing to find the right size in yet another Altra model.

@krilin842 жыл бұрын
@@movemorenowjames Thanks. Researching this subject now, I find many people recommend actually transitioning through using barefoot shoes, both in daily life and in run training, in order to really start engaging all those hibernating muscles in the foot, which would be helpful especially when having deveoped a low arch. Of course you'd be doing this very carefully, but still, an interesting idea that I might give a go alongside doing the Altra for the longer stuff. Is this something you have considered or tried?

Excellent Review and couldn’t agree more on “why?!” They got rid of the King MT 2! Superior has been my “workhorse” for many years now. Great video, I had the superior and Timp 2 both of which were great but did fall apart a little too soon. Since I’ve gone for the Inov8 Terraultra 270, still zero drop and fairly wide toe box (not Altra wide) but still pretty good. Feels so good underfoot, built like a tank, and grip is top notch. Could do with a more padded is my only gripe. Might be worth a look.

The Timp 4 would have been a great shoes but they decided to have wholes in midsole. Also, I got the outsole torn in 3 places after my first 50k in mix terrain. Thanks for the great review. I tried LP5 and LP6 and found them narrow in the forefoot. Comparing to older LP4.5 and other altras (Olympus4, Soperior4.5, MB) found that outsole and insoles about 5mm narrower in the forefoot (this for size us11.5). So my foot is just overhanging from the sole in forefoot. Do not have the same problem with the other altras. Did you observe similar issues with LP. Do wide LP has wider outsole in the forefoot?
@movemorenowjames2 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes I did find a little narrow but for me it was ok, and stretched out and opened up over the miles. The most important thing I found is that my big toe needs to be straight not pushed in, and these were ok with that… That’s for the feedback

Thanks for a comprehensive review James! Been using my LP5 for all sorts of thing here on the west coast of Sweden. Hiked, trained and ran multiple races (20-80 km) in various weather conditions, including snow. Many complain about durabilty, but I personally haven't had issues. Ok, now close to 1000miles I have some insignificant tear and wear and cushioning is about to retire. I noticed that after 50+ km my feet starting to get a bit 'tired' of the ground feeling, so I am thinking of trying Timp 4 or Olympus 4 as my next shoe. Which of those are closer to the minimalistic feeling of LP and would work better as a daily trainer?

Superior has the potential to take over the lone peak as the best technical hiking shoe. I think they can take things from the king MT to make that happen like the heel lock down fabric and a more durable (vibram) outsole but more of a flexible patter seen in the new Montblanc and olympus and use the same extensive drainage system. Would also like to see a more stylish design change that is more understated (something theyve make a huge leap with in their '22 releases). With my experience with the 4.5 lug durability was the biggest issue. Half of the lug material was worn away after a 60mi hiking trip, almost completely worn in high usage areas. All Altra needs to do is put some of these things together to make the perfect nimble but rugged ground-feel shoe that's suits technical technical hiking. If they are capable of going even lower to the ground with maintaining what is great, even better!
@movemorenowjames2 жыл бұрын
I hear what you are saying. Between all the shoes there is a good recipe for a fantastic one. The King mt2 had a great lock down, awesome grip and great ground feel… pretty minimal for me over the long run but loved it.

After wearing Timp 4s for 6 weeks and about 200 miles, my feet blew straight through the upper of both shoes in the same place: on the outsides of both shoes below the logo and above the overlay. I didn't. catch my feet on anything or scrape anything, the upper is just weak. Also, the lug depth on these is only 4mm and they wear down quickly. The durability of these is terrible especially for a $160 shoe. On my Lone Peak 5s, the stitching started to come undone near the pinky toe after about the same mileage. I will no-longer be buying Altra trail shoes, the durability is just weak, especially for the price of the shoes. The durability of my Altra Escalante road shoes seem fine after about 150 mi.
