I’m on my second pair of Inov8 trailflys . Incredibly comfy on stoney terrain and also on interlinking road sections. Hard wearing 750 miles out of my first pair. Yes a little heavy but I’ve tried Hokas and they are always a little too narrow for my foot shape. Price - Inov8 have managed discount reductions and paid about £140 - £150 - Higher price I think offset by the durability of the shoe.

Yeah its a toughy. I've been in the SpeedGoat 5's now for a bit and completely agree with you on everything you've said. It's tolerable but could be a lot better in mid foot section. Also I enjoy the laces and padded tongue better in the Torrent 2's. Hack: I actually pulled the laces out of one of my old Torrents and using them on the SpeedGoats....They're longer and less strechy so feel like its giving me more support.

Great review. I’ve put 600 miles on my Trailfly’s and happy with their performance. Agree on the lack of padding with the tongue, weight is a little heavy and the price is just too high. Great video Loyd. I so wanted to love the Speedgoat 5’s but the toe box is so frustratingly narrow. Having use Altra’s for a while, it’s so difficult to give up that footshape toe box. I was put off by the mixed reviews of the Mont Blanc so I’ve just purchased the Timp 4’s and absolutely love them. The Ego Max midsole is the most comfortable midsole I’ve experienced so far. I just wish it came with a Vibram megagrip!

Thanks Anthony, glad you enjoyed the video. I totally agree, the Egomax midsole on the Timps is really good! Thank you for this video. I was on the hunt for a good trail shoe for walking and speed walking my dogs on challenging terrain. My local 42 Degrees North store didn't have the Inov8 but they had the Hoka Speedgoat 5 and the Altra Mont Blanc so got to test them both out on their treadmill and I must say I'm NOT a fan of the Hoka Speedgoat 5. Can't tie them tight enough for my liking and I didn't like the feel of the midsole or the back of the shoe. The Altra may have that weird heel but it ties up nice and snug and once I started walking the treadmill with speed and incline I REALLY liked them. So I bought them and head straight home to get my dogs and off we went on some steep terrain and I must say I LOVE the Altra Mont Blanc. I noticed very minimal heel slip and that was only on a real steep climb but on the straights and downgrades no slippage what so ever in the heel. I had my heart set on some Inov8 Trail fly but none are in my area. I'm pleased with my new Altra Mont Blanc shoes...

Great comparison , fair, detailed and honest stuff… I am looking forward to the sg5 in wide
@marccastle82492 жыл бұрын
Do you think they will do it in a genuine wide? Normally a wide fit for Hoka just means more volume in the upper, which then just makes lock down hard and your feet still bulge over the side of the foam.
@movemorenowjames2 жыл бұрын
@@marccastle8249 it’s a funny one but I think with Hoka they actually do make the overall width wider but I found with others they just make more fabric/ upper… as you said. I might be wrong or could be a placebo trick on my brain! Think the good thing with the sg5 is that they have got rid of the plastic overlays that restrict any stretch
@movemorenowjames2 жыл бұрын

@@movemorenowjames I’ve watched your reviews and thoughts on the MB’s, and a lot of your other content good stuff 👍 I bought a pair of Clifton 8’s in wide and convinced they were not so bought a pair of standard width and the were the same a baggy upper does not make a wide fit! I raised the issue with Hoka who blanked me which was disappointing… I hope the SG5’s will be genuine wide fit, time will tell. My go to shoes for a while have been Terraultra g270’s loved em, but recently probably due to my running volume increase covering mountainous terrain my feet are hurting in them, like you pointed out with the SG 4’s I feel it’s to do with the plastic overlays Inov8 use causing hot spots. I have converted to Altra lone Peaks to help my feet recover but I cannot get a lock down good enough for technical terrain. I had high hopes for the Mont Blancs but feel I can’t take the risk. So I am in a difficult place on shoe choice with time running out! Black toes are looking likely !!

Awesome comparison! Was wearing the speedgoat for a while and my first ultra (100k). On all my pair, I’ve sliced open the toe box for more room for my toes, but it lets in debris. Performance on most other aspects are brilliant. Wearing Altra Rivera 2 right now for road runs due to the zero drop and wide toe box and loving them. The Mont Blanc’s have intrigued me but haven’t tried them yet. Currently wearing the terrailtra g270’s (now Trailfly G270) for their zero drop and rugged outsole. Also enjoying the trail feel due to the lower stack height. Loving them currently. Not sure if they’ll do for 100k distances. Haven’t tried the Trailfly ultra G300 yet but want to stay zero drop. Have to say the Speed Goat 5 has been disappointing compared to the SG4. The 5 has lost durability due to lack of overlays and ripped out at 200 miles where the 4 is worn out but the uppers are still in great condition. I get that Hoka was trying to make the shoe lighter but I think it went too far and the 5 is also too narrow, even the wide version. Unless Hoka can address the width and add a bit more overlay back in the next version for durability I’m going to have to move on.

I think the Vibram Megagrip is a little bit better in the wet Mikkel but I haven't had an issue with the G-Grip. I'm glad you're enjoying the Trailfly ultras and thanks for watching the channel 🙏😊

Speed goat is 292g vs 300 for trail fly. So pretty much the same weight, no?
@Run4Adventure2 жыл бұрын
No Chris, my Speedgoats in a UK10 are 305g and my Trailflys in a uk9.5 are 360g! So quite a bit heavier 👍 I wouldn't say the Trailflys run heavy but you do notice the weight difference. Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel 🙏😊
@chrisburke97212 жыл бұрын
@@Run4Adventure thank YOU! that’s interesting how different they are from what they post as the weights for a size 9 US. Online states 10.5oz for spg 5 and 10.6oz for trail fly. That’s misleading if reality weighs much heavier. Hmm.
@Run4Adventure2 жыл бұрын
@@chrisburke9721 I've mentioned it a few times on the channel, it so misleading! The the 300 in the Trailflys name is reference to the weight of the shoes but every size is a different weight? 🤔
@chrisburke97212 жыл бұрын
@@Run4Adventure thanks! When you research weights online it appears they use a size 9 for eight quotes on hoka and for inov8. I have the last years Gfly ultra which I had to manual break on the toungue sidewall as it dug on a bit. Once broken in it’s been a great shoe especially on technical terrain. Just was watching your review to see if the trail fly would be good upgrade for long training with more cushion! I appreciate your channel!!

It’s a shame the Altra Olympus 5 hasn’t come out yet this year, as perhaps a better contender from Altra would have been the latest Olympus shoe which is pretty bulletproof in lock down, upper and grip?

It definitely can't be worse than the Mont Blanc when it comes to lock down and heal slip Phil! 😲 Thanks for watching, hope you're fit and well 😊

Love my speedgoat 5s! They have been awesome and very similar to my evo speedgoats which were the best! Much prefer them over the Salomon ultra glides that don’t suit my foot as well, and wear too fast with the lugs especially near the heel. Just got Hoka Tecton X and loved them! Light and fast. Did slip a little bit only some one run and it was very wet, steep and technical where I slipped a little. Wonder if I would have in SG5 with deeper lugs than the shallower lite base ones. Got a few 100km races coming up and think either SG5 or Tecton X will be great. One is more climbing and technical so will opt for SG5. Other on sand and varied surfaces but less technical and more fire trail type stuff where I think Tecton X will easily handle, so want to extra pop and lighter ride
@Run4Adventure2 жыл бұрын
Glad you're enjoying your SG5's Joel. The lack of grip on the Tecton X is a shame, I don't know why they didn't put a slightly deeper lug on the outsole? I think it would of made it a much better allrounder, rather than a trail shoe just for dry trails. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel its really appreciated 🙏😊

Thanks and….Oh dear, I was just about to order one.(unfortunately none available locally to try). Remember I have the Inov8 TerraUltra G270 for difficult terrain. (Annoying now discontinued, but available at £99, maybe get a pair in for next year). The MB would be for easier stuff, but the hope is that it would be better for longer distance, 50k plus. Yes. Trailfly at £99 sounds a better deal, but I prefer a zero drop. Though I do wonder with a max cushion shoe whether you feel the drop so much, ie the heel is going to compress more than the mid foot. Cheers Mark
@markthomasson50772 жыл бұрын
Well I went for them. From the reviews, they seem to be a bit of a Marmite shoe, but seemed to fit the bill for what I wanted. Looking for a shoe for longer easier terrain. Out of the box, in the house, they did feel weird, thick sole and pronounced toe rocker. And I could feel the looseness on the heel that worries a lot of reviewers. True to fit, the same as my old Escalantes. So out for my usual 14k run, over the Forth Road Bridge and round the headland. It includes a few K of trail, with some rough stones. So how were they. Though a max cushioning, the are actually very firm, so you don’t get that floating on air feel, which is perhaps good in the longevity of the midsole. Walking they do feel not quite right, but running they are fine. Pressure is definitely mid foot. You have to consciously press your toes down. They feel most in tune at, for me, quite a fast pace. Confortable straight away, though the tongue is an issue, too short, too thin. I did actually put some extra padding under the top, as suggested by others. The laces are actually quite good, grippy and don’t come undone, but do press into your foot, I will try others. Once tightened up, there is good mid foot retention and stability, and with the extra padding and a runners knot, the lose heel is minimal, for me not a worry. (Removing the insoles would help this) So do I get out the little black bottle to spice up my toast, yup, I really like them. Felt I got a good work out, though hit a few less used muscles. It will be interesting to see how they cope with more demanding terrain when I am back in the Highlands next week. I did get them at a very good discount from Start Fitness, especially with an introductory code. Time will tell how they fare longer term (I usually find, that for me, outside heel outsole wears quickly and the midsole packs down unevenly)

@@markthomasson5077 Running shoes are so personal and what doesn't work for me, might work for others. I've never been a fan of a runners knot but I did try it with the Mont Blanc. I found the tounge was to short and to under padded and laces hurt the top of my foot! I'm not sure the lug will be Deep enough for the Highlands in winter, might struggle with traction? I'm glad they're working out for you 👍

I went to my local shop to buy a pair of Salomons and left with the speedgoats. They are by some margin my favourite shoe to run in, I almost exclusively run trail now and I think that the shoes are a big part of that preference.
