Dragonglass, or obsidian, is one of the only weaknesses of the white walkers in Game of Thrones / ASOIAF. What is obsidian? Where can the Night’s Watch get more of it? And what are glass candles?

I'm oddly sort of okay with straight up dragon flame being ineffectual against an Other. It's got sort of a "Not that simple" feeling to it. Dragonglass to me feels like "Frozen Fire" which, to a frozen icy demon, would fucking suck to be stabbed by. "Meeting them at their own level" sort of thing.

So here it goes..after a long battle, the Night King goes on to sit in the Iron Throne, and the moment his sits, he melts and shatters. The Iron Throne is fused together by Dragon fire, and so it probably has the same properties as the Dragon glass.

Or, like every other metal sword, the throne shatters into dust. Just melting steel with dragon fire doesn't make it Valyrian steel. If it did then someone in the last 300 years would have noticed what the throne was made of. Valyrian steel isn't some mythical rumor that no one has ever seen. Besides, why would the TV show Night King want to sit on the Throne? Think he really wants to rule over the people when he could just kill them, warg their dead bodies, and have the people follow him that way? Doesn't seem to be all that interested in keeping people alive or making them bend the knee.

I picked up on a few things worth mentioning though. 1) We've seen Valyrian steel to be able to kill white walkers too though admittedly there aren't many valyrian weapons around anymore. 2) When Tommen's men searched Dragonstone, they didn't find a gemstone or gold BUT what if they considered the dragon glass worthless and so overlooked it? 3) Anyone else wanna know what happened with Valyria? I think the most likely explanation is the theory that the Long Night ended in a peace treaty, and humans stopped abiding by that treaty as time went on and fact became considered legend, and the necessary baby sacrifice became seen as the abominable thing it is. So, humans stopped sacrificing babies, so the Others are coming from the perspective of "you broke the treaty, so you're the aggressors."

I had always just assumed that another method of creating obsidian was hinted at in its name: dragon glass. That is, get a dragon to blast fire at the right stones in order to melt it, and when it cools, voila -- dragon glass. If it can be created volcanically, why not also by other (magical) fires?

Valyrian Steel and Dragon Glass share the same properties. One has been forged in the fires of Old Valyria (The fires are actually the lava from the 14 flames). And similarly dragon glass is also made from lava

you have to wonder, what if a tiny shard of obsidian was fixed on the tip of a regular arrow? how tiny can the shard get to kill a whight? what if you embed these shards on swords blades? does it need to break the skin of a whight or is it enough to just touch it? so many questions that only one person could answer... one a side note: wish i could upvote a second time for terraria. somehow feel the need to recommend you check out Joe Price's yt channel, he built actual computers in terraria. as always, keep it up, your style and videos are top quality its just a joy to watch. although the sound is just fine, you might consider investing in a better mic, it would just further round up the already awesome quality of your videos. ps: gotta appreciate the fact that you actually use ncbi to provide sources.

Omg, there really could be a link between Obsidian and Azor Ahai as well as the Targaryens/Valyrians. Hear me out: So let's assume Azor Ahai really wielded a sword out of obsidian. We do know for certain that Obsidian is able to kill White Walkers. But there is one more thing that supposedly is able to do so and that is Valyrian Steel. What if Valyrian Steel is an alloy of Obsidian and regular steel combined with some magic (which we know was common in Valyria and is linked to dragons)? The art of forging it has long been forgotten and so is the use of Obsidian. You also said that Obsidian is a really sharp material. The show and the books remind us ever so often that nothing cuts better than Valyrian Steel. If the Doom was of a volcanic nature (which it supposedly is) Valyria should have had access to Obsidian en masse since volcanoes should already have been there before the Doom and they still had their dragons. What do you think?

Maybe it took Dragon Fire to melt both the Glass and Metal together to create Valyrian steal seeing as Old Valyria mastered dragons and used them in many ways before the use in war. Maybe Drogon will create a blade for Jon Snow using glass and steel and that way he becomes a new Azor Ahai for this new winter. That'd be cool.

I don't think that Azor Ahai is the Last Hero their storys differ to strong. For example Azor Ahai has a flamming Sword, the sword of the Last Hero shatters through cold etc.

Sofia A Yes but the story differ to much: Azor Ahai forged 3 swords and only the sword didn't shattered which he used to sacrife his wife. Than he had a awesome flaming sword. The last hero's story isn't about a sword the story is more about his companions, his dog and his horse. He didn't sacrife the one he loved. He went one a journey to search for help and he was simply the strongest/luckiest to survive. I think that Azor Ahai did fight the cold with fire, while the Last Hero was simply stronger than the cold. If I think about it how old is btw. Coldhand?

Feuer der Veränderung The Last Hero is also the story of a guy who was looking for the ultimate weapon/method to fight creatures of the night, and failed multiple times before he achieved that goal. That weapon ultimately came in the form of a blade that could kill the Others, and can even be lit with fire by using magic. It's the bigger picture that counts. There are enough *thematic* similarities between Azor Ahai and The Last Hero to speculate that they might have been the same person. The details in their respective legends can easily be explained by cultural differences. Even TWOIAF points out that several cultures throughout Planetos have legends about a hero similar to Azor Ahai, and can be said to be variants of the same myth.

Sofia A Can you say me where is standing that the ultimate weapon the Last Hero found was a blade? As far as I know he searched for the Children of the Forest and we think they gave the Nightwatch obsidian weapons to kill the white walkers. Furthermore if we look at the bigger picture than is either the Legend of the last hero more accurate than the legend of azor ahai since the first men should be the ones who fought the white walkers first OR similar events did happen at different sides of the globe which supports that the last hero and azor ahai are two different persons. I mean it is like china and norway having a similar ancient legend about a flood.

Feuer der Veränderung I was actually referring to obsidian weapons. Obsidian weapons are blades. And in asoiaf, they can be lit on fire with magic. And yes, according to TWOIAF, the Long Night was a global event. We know that in the far east are the Five Forts, which serve to protect against "demons of the night". Sound familiar? We also don't have a complete map of the world. The map cuts off right after the five forts. There is some speculation, both in TWOIAF and in the fandom, that perhaps some part of far northeastern Essos that doesn't appear on the incomplete map connects to the Lands of Always Winter (aka, Planetos's version of the Arctic Circle). So yes, Westeros and Essos may be geographically connected in some way. Or, another possibility, is that the Shivering Sea froze completely solid during The Long Night. In either case, there way have been some movement between Westeros and Essos during that time. Also keep in mind that The Long Night happened thousands and thousands of years ago. That's plenty of time for cultural exchange. Also, the legend of The Last Hero/Azor Ahai/Yin Tar/Hyrkoon/Eldric Shadowchaser/The Promised Prince are hardly thing that has similar counterparts throughout the Known World. There's also the mythos behind oily black stone, found in The Iron Islands, The Basilisk Isles, Yi Ti, Asshai, and possibly even Valyria. The black trees that grow outside the House of the Undying have many similar properties to wierwoods, especially that tea made from their leaves that the warlocks drink (when Dany drinks it, it's very similar to when Bran eats weirwood paste). Fused black stone similar to the type Valyrians used is found in Oldtown. And north of the Dothraki Sea used to be the Kingdom of the Ifequevron. The name "ifequevron" means "woods walker" in Dothraki, and it refers to an ancient race of small people who lived in the woods, said to be related to the Children of the Forest.

White walkers are not zombies. Zombies suck. What They are is more along the lines of what would be called a Revenant. they are magical creatures, and are obviously intelligent.

+Angworu Revenant We don't know their origin. from what we've seen they are not dead. The baby at the end of season 1? or 2? i cant remember, seemingly gets turned into a white walker. We haven't seen or heard anything of that since so it's hard to say. They are what is called a necromancer, the power to communicate with the dead, but in most fantasy cases, the power to bring back the dead.

Haiiry Cake I've played a bit of minecraft. It's useful for building certain structures and is required for a few things like enchanting tables. Not required, but could constitute as a high end crafting material.

HOT TAKE: Daenerys will never actually get to Westeros. Her story is not about becoming queen of Westeros (though that is her motivation at first) but about her gaining power, learning how to control it and growing up. My guess is she'll finish the series as a wealthy woman living somewhere in Braavos -- in a house with a red door.

Well, what we saw in the show was the Sorrows on the Rhoyne which they decided to move to Valyria - because reasons. And because they wanted to speed up Tyrion's trip to Slaver's Bay. That whole sequence was rather confusing and that little boat got some great mileage! As did the carriage that Tyrion and Varys were traveling in as well. There was some very powerful fast traveling going on in the last season.
