Great video, extremely helpful as I'm planning to install one of these this spring (I'd use you guys if I wasn't 2000 miles away!). So you just use the header as a sort of junction box where all the wires connect since its protected correct?

nice work on the roof part, but the you should have some kind of a bushing were you drilled all your holes for the electrical wires as to not cut into the wire and should have used fan safe boxes with through bolts and lock nuts and some kind of weather proofing from the top. these are major NEC code violations. not to mention the safety hazards ie.(electrocution from several means, fans falling on your heads over time, especially in earthquake state, USA) i'm sure that's not a UL approved assembly. would have failed inspection around here in Florida for sure. can't believe you passed in Cali., with all the rules you guys have over there. i hope you addressed these issues and just didn't show it, but somehow i don't think you did. i hope your liability is up to snuff for your sake.

I'd feel better about using bushings, BUT . . . for NMB coming from a raceway into a metal panel, NEC doesn't require a bushing (the outer jacket is protecting the conductors). I suspect the Alumawood installation is getting by on that. As for a fan-safe box - that doesn't apply here. The fan hanger is attached to the aluminum panel with four self-tapping screws, each with a pull-out of about 300lbs. So they're more than covered on both capacity and redundancy - although, if it were my home (in Southern California, with earthquakes), I'd probably add a pop rivet to each bracket for peace of mind.

That outer jacket is not protection from sharp jagged metal edges. Plus as I stated before should have used a fan safe box as the NEC states all (splices, joints, connections, etc...) shall be done in a box. Therefore the box should have been attached to the bracing and the fan attached to the fan safe box. Not to mention the roof installer probably didn't have an electrical contractor's license to do the electric either. As I said, it would have failed inspection here in Florida.

@@chaser9363 NEC 300.15{A} A box or conduit body shall not be required for each splice, junction, switch, pull, termination, or outlet points in wiring methods with removable covers, such as wireways, multioutlet assemblies, auxiliary gutters, and surface raceways. The covers shall be accessible after installation. The patio cover plus the "cap" they put on the top surface comprises the raceway, and the fan canopy is the removable cover -- no box required. Don't agree? Cite the NEC section that applies to this specific application.

@@jeffeverde1 had to go back and review the vid. By the way, good catch on the exception. I haven't ever read that one before and I might be obliged to use it on a set of coach lights that are standing off a wall because the pancake boxes are surface mounted and are taller than the canopy of the lights. But in this case that beam and the roof pan is not a UL Listed raceway for one, plus as stated in section(C), there's no fitting to provide "protection of the wire from abrasion" when passing through those drilled, sharp and jagged holes. So this would be the argument from the inspectors here. Resulting in a "HARD FAIL". I know, I know, "you're glad you're not here" . 😂 Once again, thanks for the "exception". And now that I think about it even more, it didn't look like they used UF cable as outside is considered a "WET" location even in a raceway. NMB isn't listed for a wet location. So there's another code violation

@@chaser9363 Greetings from Australia. So good to see what I take are professional electrician commenting on the wiring. As a retired sparky here in Oz I absolutely cringe as some of the installations including this one on youtube. Our Wiring rules here in Oz are very strict but we do not require things such as wring boxes ( in most cases) for our lights and power outlets. I just watched one video where the installer used single insulated cable in a similar circumstance in un-bushed metal holes and tried to convince me it it was to code in America _ I dont think so. We are mucking around with electricity here and no-one wants to be responsible for an electrocution.
