I'm a rookie and have a question about moisture. I did some casting a while back and the ambient humidity was probably low; i think it was winter (probably). I tried again recently (mid May) and thing were cloudy. Alumilite said my resin was too old, so I bought new Clear Slow and things were less cloudy, but still not good. Maybe I need to heat things a little like you do here. This gives rise to another question: Do you dry the air that you use for your pressure pot? If so, how do you do that? Another question: Do you use an oven or would an infrared light work? My wife's never gonna go for me using the oven. Thanks. I find your cannel very informative.
@JakeThompson

Hello Jim.. I use a toaster oven to dry my wood. I actually do a stabilizing process on all the wood I use in casting.. and I still heat it up before casting. I do have a moisture trap on my air line and I drain the air tank and let the moisture out that way pretty often too.

Hey there, Jake… I am new to Woodturning, and have never casted anything in resin. are you recommending that all wood needs to be stabilized before casting it in resin?
@JakeThompson
@JakeThompson 7 ай бұрын
Hello there… the situation dictates what we do.. if the wood is punky and might fall apart on the lathe.. in my opinion, it definitely needs stabilized.. if you aren’t turning it, it can just be coated in resin to keep the moisture and air away from the resin you are pouring.. I hope this helps

I took your advice and purchased some burl pieces from worldwide burl. My goal is to create some handle blanks using that material combined with resin. Do you stabilize any of the burl that you get from him? PS, I intend to purchase some of your products to make these blanks. I’ve also started watching your Saturday show.

I have issues with the Alumilite turning milky at the top of the mold, even at 50 pounds of pressure after mixing for 5 minutes before the pour. This is without adding any color to it. I will even wait longer than the required time to demold as well. What is going wrong?

Milky usually means there’s moisture present.. are you heating your molds before casting.. are you casting with wood ?

I like alumilute clear slow, but the slow in the name is very very dishonest. You aren't in the pot with correct pressure within 15 minutes you are going to be in a bad way. Great for when you need to pour clear, single color, or in just large amounts and you don't care what happens with the colors as long as they don't blend. Not good when you are pouring multiple smaller pours at once and you want to pour for specific color effects using 3+ colors. You just don't have enough time to be fancy with your pour.
@JakeThompson
@JakeThompson 2 жыл бұрын
It says 12 minutes of working time on the label. So I’m not sure if that’s being dishonest.. I agree I could probably have a different name, or maybe they could rename Alumilite Clear with 7 minutes working time.. “Alumilite Clear Fast” 😀
@DKarkarov

No mask I take it there's no VOC's to worry about? I suppose that trying to put it in a vacuum chamber for 3 or 4 minutes won't help. I'll have to invest in a resin-pressure pot. There's no way I'm going to convert my pressure canners. They don't make them pots like those anymore. 😅 I already sacrificed an Excalibur dehydrator for curing. 🫢🫣😇 Being new to resin I'm seeing all the things I was worrying about. I would have ended up with a big, Big, BIG MESS. 😱
@JakeThompson
@JakeThompson 5 ай бұрын
No mask because it’s hard to understand me when im trying to talk on camera… I suggest wearing a respirator whenever working with any resin although this doesn’t have a smell to it. There’s not really enough time to put it in a vacuum chamber and this particular resin requires a pressure pot. You could get the bubbles out before you cast it but there will be more bubbles created just with the reaction that need to be taken care of with a pressure pot..
@VickyShawcooksalot
@VickyShawcooksalot 5 ай бұрын
@JakeThompson Okay I was wondering. 60 years ago, even 30 years ago let me tell you that stuff was potent. 😵‍💫 So far what I've tried isn't bad. My nail polish is more toxic. 😵 And I was worried that the chemical reaction was creating major bubbles. Thanks for the information. And I'm still not using one of my old canners. 🙃
