And what is Urethane? Is it different from Polyurethane?
@AlumiliteCorporation7 күн бұрын
@@ROBOROBOROBOROBO Urethane is a chemical compound that serves as the building block for many materials, including polyurethane. Polyurethane, on the other hand, is a polymer made by combining urethane molecules. Think of urethane as the “ingredient,” while polyurethane is the “final product” created from it. In short: urethane is the foundation, and polyurethane is a more complex material made from it, often used in foams, coatings, and resins.

This was a much needed explanation for me! Just starting to incorporate resin into my wood turnings. Id gotten a small amount of Clear slow and poured my first pen blanks where I casted mini pine cones. Turned out great, so I ordered the 16lb kit just the other night! I was really excited to start using it to cast wood into large blanks. I am SO glad I watched this before I combined this with some wood that may not have been perfectly dry and ruined the whole thing! Would love to see a video with more detail about casting wood into blanks, or using epoxy/urethane to fill knots, cracks, voids, etc.; When it’s ok to use one vs the other; What moisture content does wood have to be before you can use urethane; etc etc. Thanks for sharing the knowledge! At 0:18 secs of this video, I feel an immense wave of relief and gratitude for this knowledge. I've been struggling to understand the different materials to use in my project and very confused. My brain is the kind where it wants to slot all information into neat boxes for further retrieval. Not having an overview of the categories and how they relate made it difficult to retain information - like having no file cabinet to slot the files in. I could just hug you for the terrific way you explained it - concise, top down, logical, factual, and one picture = 1000 words! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! Part 2 suggestion: Tinting Pigments. Please explain pigments and tints. So bewildering. I want to use Durabak Polyurethane bed liner. Its a great product but comes in standard solid opaque colors that I don't like. They want me to use a non-water based, paste pigment to get my color. Should I thin the paint to get a more wet application or could i cover it with high gloss polyurethane? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
@AlumiliteCorporationАй бұрын
If the acrylic epoxy finish is coming out rough, try thinning the paint slightly for a smoother application and ensure your HVLP sprayer settings are optimized (adjust air pressure and spray distance). Covering it with high-gloss polyurethane could work for added shine, but sticking with a compatible epoxy topcoat would be better for durability and adhesion. For best results, ensure proper surface prep and environmental conditions. Let us know if you need more tips!

Great question! Epoxy is going to work the best! We recommend checking out our sister company Stone Coat Countertops - they specialize in surface coating epoxies and have a lot of great resources for this type of project! Check them out here: www.stonecoatcountertops.com/countertops

Question...I have a plywood floor. Primed with a paint primer. Then covered with kraft paper glued. Then 5 coats of a water base polyurethane product. I want a thicker topcoat/sealer....can I use a clearcoat epoxy over my floor? Thanks

As long as the water-based polyurethane product is 100% cured before pouring your epoxy, this should work great, but we would still recommend doing a small test cure to make sure there aren't any negative reactions!

Jordan, can cured Alumilite be painted? And then if it can be painted, can it be clear-coated; and if so, should I clear-coat with Alumilite or can I clear coat with polyurethane or some other brush applied clear coating? I will be making an item that will be turned on a lathe, then sanded and polished.

Great video - I am repairing a boat so my main question was whether to use epoxy or polyester - keeping in mind gel coat will be going on last.
