His approach is of an artist that paints a lot in plein air, because there you don't have time, the sun keeps going and you have to be fast, confident and perceptive. Without a doubt he is a great master of watercolor and he gives me a lot of inspiration. Thanks for this video! It's the second great video on KZbin that I've found about Alvaro.

When the very first time watercolor caught my attention , I never knew who Joseph Z was or Alvaro , Thomas S… then I started watching these people in action.. I always thought what Alvaro is doing? But now I realise his loose and free painting style is more expressive and yes as always he starts with a disastrous approach which always ends up looking so wonderful … great respect for him and all the other artists.. too bad I am honing my skills in charcoal and pencil for now.. not much of watercolor but once I start I would love to replicate his style .. thank you for this video ..

fantastic! And I'd lovr to leave some notes so when I come back here I know which D. Smith colors Alvarro uses: 2b pencil light sketch, then 6b to firm up good outline; yellow ochre thin on sky with light cerulean blue at very top in wet y. ochre, let bleed, a little alizarin crimson, magenta, ultramarine blue mixed for darkest shadows; at opera sign: lots of pure pyrrole red for awning; hansa yellow deep and yellow ochre; below awning: lots pyrrole red under awning; back to neural cool tint, adding alizarin crimson for slight warming into foreground, road adds a little burnt sienna in dark shadows, save highlights, add straight from tube for reflected light and awning: pyrrole orange for details in the crowd and focal point....that's the general colors :-)

Thanks for your sharing tips for painting Watercolors! We each paint differently. I love to see how some artists have the ability to create suggestions of details with very few strokes! In your Opera painting, your mind fills in the blanks where the tables and people are milling about. I try to paint daily when time allows and still keep learning. I have an arsenal of brushes to paint with, but I find that about 10 brushes are what I do almost all of my works with. I find that so many artists work with small brushes and their work gets to ''tight'' resulting in boring paintings. Try using some cheap throw away brushes some time. I believe you will find the results very surprising and fun too!
