I don’t think I have ever seen an artist have so much fun. As he said, “have fun”. I think when we become adults we lose the spirit of fun. This video has inspired me to go and have some “fun” when I paint.

I have been doing art my entire life, but watercolor was never even a thought…. till I saw this episode. It blew my mind & Alvaro made it look so fun! I had to give it a go. 5 years later Im happy to say that Im still painting & the experience has even improved my graphite drawings (portraits that r not watercolor) as my approach centers 100% on massing now, in place of linear drawing. Since this episode, I have sought out other incredible watercolor artists & of course, enjoyed every Alvaro interview & demo I could find. Learning as much as possible about the man & his philosophy. Out of respect, I do not paint wet streets or city scapes. He is pretty clear about learning: wear ur own clothes while painting a lion in place of the pussy cat. Basically, express ur own ideas & do so with passion, abandoning all fear. So, thats what I carry with me in place of ‘what color’ or ‘what supplies’. Absolutely life changing, simply from the joy of doing, nothing else. No money or fame, no ego…..I just love creating, I love watercolor. There r very few celebrities I wish to meet, but I would shake his hand & simply say, ‘Thank you’ ✌🏻

Water colour painting is the most difficult of all the mediums to master, the secret is simplicity. The next, is drawing skills, without a good knowledge of drawing you will never be able to do it....BUT you will enjoy your effort. To be a good watercolour artist will take at least 5 years of constant drawing and painting.....plus a natural talent. (I teach art)

+Little Break And so, you shouldn't listen, or what? What is it with that stupid quote, which takes reason away from people? There have been amazing teachers in all fields that couldn't do it themselves just as well as their students. Good advice is relevant even if it comes from someone who can't apply it. But if you can only throw shit at it, maybe you will splatter some on yourself, too.
