This makes me appreciate, even more than I already do, all those amazing looking Sunsoft games on the NES that looked better than alot of SNES games. Namely Return of the Joker, Gremlins 2, Blaster Master, and Festers Quest.

Hello Brad! Just wanted to drop a comment and tell you that seeing Alwa’s Awakening for the NES has inspired me to dive into learning how to develop for the NES. The sprites, music, and aesthetics are some of the best I’ve ever seen and played. I look forward to seeing what else you create in time!

Will definitely keep an eye on this project :) I always wondered how many workarounds a game like Mega Man 9 and 10 would take to make them work on the NES. These kinds of things just fascinate me

Nicely put together video, and great looking game! I only missed something that would illustrate the 16x16 color regions, but this should be posted on nesdev if it hasn't been already!

Brad, I've got a couple questions. Why is your target 512 KB? Since you plan on releasing a physical cartridge, why not go with a custom mapper that could support a game the size of Metal Slader Glory or even larger? Heck, the EverDrive N8 can support 8 MEGABYTES of CHR and another 8 of PRG. That would involve a hell of a lot of bankswitching but my point as an NES programmer layman is it seems odd to stick to the same size NES games as were made during its lifespan.

period correct? Like matching numbers on old cars. If you really love large memory, why don't you just code for Genesis with its large address bus?

Are you planning to do another video about sprites? I guess not because it was a while, but with this video, and the info you put in your Kickstarter game about NES games it's the greatest knowledge I found. I hope you keep posting videos, but even if not, I must say it's awesome.

I had no idea Alwa's Awakening was being remade to an actual NES game! How are they going to manage the final scene at the end that eludes to the sequel, Alwa's Legacy?

This sounds like a very cool project. I guess using 1 full meg of memory like the did with Metal Slader Glory is not an option? Looking forward to seeing how this progresses. Good luck:)

For making modern NES cartridges, sizes of 4MB (with 16K switchable banks) or 8MB (with 32K switchable banks) aren't that hard to do with simple discrete logic chips. But with the simple packing methods described in the video, you'd be hard-pressed to fill that much space.

Hi, i hope that it will be multi-languages like "Demon of Asteborg" did with 6 differents languages. Hope this for the new Retro-Bit edition NES cartbridge.
@Sakanakao3 жыл бұрын
With the size of the NES cartridge, we had to make a choice between multiple languages and more content, and we chose the content. The Asteborg genesis cart is about 32x the size of ours, so they probably didn't have to make a decision like this. We might be able to patch the ROM with other languages, but there was not enough space for more than one language on the cart.
@zizarami32703 жыл бұрын
@@Sakanakao Thanks for your answer, ok so do you think you'll make available to download the language patch somewhere ,if we use a rom file on a flashcart ?
