Great reaction! ❤️ 👏 This song is a MASTERPIECE and darker than people realize. Lauryn was writing/singing about Wyclef Jean, her former Fugees bandmate and lover with whom she had a tempestuous relationship. There are two parts of this song that show how toxic and even harmful the relationship was: 1) She ends the first two verses with, "No one loves you more than me and no one ever will" which just sounds like any love song right? But then in the last stanza she switches it to "No one's HURT ME more than you and no one ever will." Which is her way of saying he has permanently scarred her. And by switching "love" to "hurt" she is connecting the two and saying that his love has hurt her deeply. 2) In the chorus, the lyric, "And when I try to walk away you'd hurt yourself to make you stay" often gets overlooked but it is a VERY specific and direct reference to self-harm. This is the darkest part of the song. She knows the relationship is toxic but every time she tries to end it, her lover threatens suicide and that pulls her back. It's a ghastly form of emotional manipulation.

I've got several of her songs in my playlist.... And I would listen to her even if she was just reading the news. I could watch her sing even if there is no sound. It almost seems unfair to the rest of us that she could be so beautiful and have such an incredible voice.

I consider myself fortunate to have been able to see her live back in 98 right after her Miseducation album was released. Cleveland State University, Convocation Center (downtown Cleveland, Ohio). I had goosebumps the entire time. Not only did she perform songs from Miseducation, but members from The Fugees joined her on stage and they jammed all night! Of all of the concerts that I've attended, this is my all time favorite. Also, Lauryn Hill is the only person that I can say who has a better live singing voice than recorded voice. It was truly a mesmerizing and unforgettable experience. FYI: A few years after Miseducation, Lauryn did her "Unplugged" (acoustic) album. The song "I just want you around" is my favorite on that one.
