I do shots all the time almost and keep some of them 95 percent ready . When I need a reel, I just polish the last 5 percent and compile as a reel.

Wonderful channel JD! While I might not always have a reel instantly ready to go, I am always capturing my work and personal animation into one central location as I finish them. You never know when a studio might suddenly shut down and not let you back in the building, sadly.

Yup, I have Experienced that & have also seen people to regret for missing those opportunities just because they don't have a good demo reel. Also I don't know why but I still see many senior artists don't even have a reel !! This even sounds scary to me! Anyway , I totally agree with you, & i also feel like even if you are at the top of something still you should always work on yourself!!

Happy Father's Day JD and thanks for this video I'll share it with friends this is awake up call for sure. I'm happy that you have a new job and yes it's easy to get comfortable regardless of project/contract. Well time to work on my personal shot blocking out my entire parkour stuff before meeting with my mentor on Fathers day otherwise I'll procasinate again with regrets. Thanks again Darrel

I am still adding body mechanics shots om my reel, but soon I might eliminate some to avoid being repetitive. But yes I got something ready.

Hi JD, always great to see your videos. I wanted to ask: Do you recommend to have a student progress reel ready even though you are still in school? Is it good to show it at animation conventions to get notes from recruiters or better to wait until acting classes at least? I might ask you at the Epic Intensive today, see you later on Zoom!

For me, working in home in my own shots is very very important. It doesn't matter which show we are working for at the studio, but it would be the same animation style followed for the entire project. So, may be a project comes for an year or two and meanwhile I have to follow that same project style . If we see the new movies or games or series, we can always find new style of animation. A complete new set of timing, spacing motion style, mix media and all. Now if I only watch them and do not do the same for myself, I feel left out. I like to search for new waters all the time, and without that it feels boaring. Ofcourse if we work at home with passion some shots will come out as demoreel. I will wait for your next episode. On 2020 I lost my job because of pandemic cost cutdown. The mental pressure was over the top all the time. It was a a red alert and panic situation for me. As I wrote above, I always work at home. I polished some shots and made a game style demoreel with one extra lip sync shot and got hired in my present company. Would wait to know how you handled the situation.
