I love Chiang Mai!💘 I was there for about 3 1/2 months and I rented an apartment room just out side of Chiang Mai Gate, $4000 baht a month! It was on the same road as the Saturday night market It had two restaurants, one for breakfast and lunch and the other was a dinner restaurant that also had karaoke every night! The old city of Chiang Mai, inside the gates was unbelievable for the culture of Thailand and the food and night life! 🦂💘 Thailand .... 🍻 Singha beer 😋 🙏

Chiang Mai is very charming. It's like Kyoto of Japan but more fun. People there are so laid back. No wonder why many Thai artists like to set up their shops there. Even the food and drinks are more artistic than the rest of the country. You can feel Chiang Mai people put their heart for work at everything. And they charge so little compared to what they give to you. My favorite area is definitely Nimman, the modernized part of the city which has the best shops and restaurants. I still have love-hate relationships with the red Song taew. Well, but it costs 10 baht to get anywhere around the city.and you can't beat its convenience. Outside the city, Chiang Mai is heaven for any nature lovers. Foreigners should experience the local homestays. They are so cheap with amazing views. The mountains will cool you down.

is cost 10 baht to get everywhere? Is this for Nimman or just red song taew? I want to visit Chiang Mai but want to have access to cheap transport, like bus or train. I don't want to use bolt or grab

@Fearless 10 baht everywhere around the city was 6 years ago when I was there and without a car. Right now, I checked it should be around 30 baht. You can just tell them where you want to go. You share a ride with other people.

Red cab is thirty bath officials since 2017/18 for longer distance and twenty for shorter. Now is thirty. If you pay ten bath to the red cub is offensive specially after covid. No red cub will except 10 bath. Even locals do not pay ten bath. The cheapest is yellow cab and is twenty bath.

This year, I'll be wrapping up a 3-month stay in Thailand with 2 weeks in Chiang Mai. My fourth trip to Thailand, but first time in Chiang Mai. Previously, my visits to Thailand have been in the south. I've already booked some reservations in and around the Old City. But am also interested in taking some trips out of the city to experience more traditional culture and scenery. I was thinking in the north, but am open to suggestion. Also, since it's my first visit and am only there a short time, I'm considering going on one of the "tour" services -- something which I'd not normally do. Any suggestions in this regard?

I have lived in Chiang Mai for several years, and Thapae Gate is not a place where one can experience local culture. As you correctly point out, it is a tourist magnet, and even your accompanying video shows McDonald’s and Starbucks and hordes of tourist milling about, with the only tThais around, being those selling trinkets and food to the hordes of tourists. The Asians, you see walking about Thapae Gate and surrounding area are not Thai people, they are Chinese tourists feeding the pigeons, despite the signs asking you not to do so.

From the past, I used to like Chiang Mai...Now it's unlikely. PM 2.5 dust is much higher than Bangkok and is ranked number one in the world as well. This problem is difficult to solve because the city is growing more and more people come to stay, more cars, more factories. Even if no one burns the forest, PM 2.5 is the most important from car smoke. City population will die in installments. Investors will aim to build real estate in the seaside town. more cities in the south because the air is easily circulated

The worst ever "hotel" that I ever stayed in decades was "Cozy Inn" in Chiang Mai. It was a mix up with a different hotel that I had intended to stay. I had already paid for a week and gosh, it was a hellhole. Nasty place, awful owner, once-white gray color towels, mosquitors, tiny rooms tiny bed, dark color to hide dirts maybe, yuck. Someone had come inside my room while I was out, but the owner didn't seem to care. Only one guy at the hotel spoke English. This place ruined Chiang Mai for me and I will never miss Chiang Mai. BTW, I love Thailand and visit frequently.
