Informative video, enjoyable also. I camp hosted as a single female at a BLM camground in CA. The bathrooms were cleaned by contractors-they made excellent wages, all litter and leftovers were handled by maintenance (they were union). My campers were fantastic, no problems there, in fact, they were quite enjoyable. All of them. The problems I had was with some of the rangers. I was 'cited' for picking up trash, lied to about accepting gratuities, and a young mans life I saved. I was told he died, but found out later he didn't. A lot of in-house squabbling among staff, ego problems, made it unpleasant. my duties were to be a campground hostess, make sure everyone found their sites okay, and that was all I did. never collected or touched money, just smiled and was helpful, informative, and pleasant. I loved it, until Ranger Rick started throwing his ego around, strutted about like a damned rooster while attempting to impress everyone with his lackluster authority. Would I do it again? Nah, I felt like I was inside a washing machine, tossed this way and that, not sure what was true, not sure which rules to follow. It's a shame because I liked my campers, but the rangers were awful.

I camp hosted at an Oregon State Park for 6 months while we sold a house. This was from September to February. Yes, the campground was busy most of the winter except for when the two feet of fresh snow fell. I was still working in the city, and it was amazing to wave to the deer on my way out of the state park every morning. We had full hook-ups and DSL internet. The only thing we had to pay for was propane. The issues you guys had was partially on you. When you've put in your scheduled hours for the week, you needed to refer the campers to the rangers, I know we had an On Duty/Off Duty sign and we were supposed to refer people elsewhere unless it was an emergency if we were off duty. Eventually, the rangers would get tired of it and hire more camp hosts. You can also talk to the rangers. If you couldn't get satisfaction about your issues go to the district manager for the state parks. Remember, you are a volunteer. You do not have to just take all the crap. State parks are saving a LOT of money because of you, so if they don't appreciate it go above them or leave. Also, we were NOT responsible to clean nasty. So obliterated bathrooms or when the partiers left biowaste in the sites or cabins we were supposed to pass that to the rangers. They get paid to deal with that, you don't.
@brianvandy4002
@brianvandy4002 3 жыл бұрын
I'll add one more thing on how much money you're saving the parks. If it is a state, county, or city park, they track all volunteer hours. Many federal grants, including the emergency money for areas declared a disaster for one reason or another, is based upon how many hours the state/county/city have on the books, including volunteer hours. So they are literally making money having your hours on the books.

Hi Bella, thank you for your response. It was an arduous task. Hence, the reason we cut our agreement short. We basically became their welcome mat. And the Campground Manager just kept piling on to the point of actually doing HIS job. Needless to say, we learned he was told to 'voluntarily retire or else'. But, that was after the fact. It still left a bitter taste in our mouths.

Hi guys, great to see you again. I will never "Camp Host". I am not cleaning up someone else's poop in the shower, or feminine hygiene products left on the floor. Some people are just "pigs" no matter which way you look at it. I mean, how gross do you have to be to leave that for someone else to have to take care of. Nope, not happn"in. I'll pass thank you very much. But, I do give you credit for going out of your way to accomplish the job, but they really took advantage of your good graces. If all you had to do was check people in or out, that's one thing, but sometimes you just gotta pass. I'm sorry that that experience was not a good one. Maybe you might find better circomstances in other places, but I just can't see myself ever being taken advantage of like that. I was in the hospitality industry for a long time and I had my fill for sure.

As you mentioned, hindsight is 20-20. You may have made your first mistake by wanting a specific location, putting yourselves at the mercy of that location. I looked into State Park Camp Hosting in Georgia. There, they had two sets of Camp Hosts, each four days on, three days off. However, after paying to camp at the Park at which I was interested in Hosting, I decided against it and have never stayed at a State Park since. Generally, State Parks are always power and water, seldom sewer. The campers who stand out at State Parks are unique individuals. Unfortunately, they are the ones you talk about, those are the memories that you are left with, they are the ones who sour you on the experience. After deciding against Workamping at a State Park, I signed on at a privately-owned RV Park about sixty miles away. The hands-on owner was ex-law enforcement with training on confrontations, seldom needed as the clientele was a different breed. When I first started, I wondered why there were endless rules. I soon learned that every rule was put in place after someone had taken advantage, and the rules were enforced. You appeared to have been abandoned. My Workamping experience left me with many pleasant memories and new friends. It's unfortunate that your experience was so different. I would like to be picky and correct the way you phrased the compensation. I did not 'supplement my income' when I Workamped, I 'reduced my expenses'. Enjoyed the video, thank you!!

Yes, it was a mistake however we didn't really have a choice at that point as we were trying to sell our home. It is refreshing to hear you've had great success in camp hosting. @@AlwaysOnLiberty In state campgrounds with unpaid hosts, the expectations are the dirty stuff is to be done by the park rangers. We worked all day Friday and two hours on a Saturday, in Branson, MO. We saw a lot of shows for free or at a discount! We went from there to working as roving managers for a self storage company. A site plus all sours worked. Our first gig was a RV & boat storage unit in California, spent a couple of moths there! Of course our next assignment was a unit in New Jersey, it was our “karmic lesson”! We’ve had some great experiences and some not so good. We will be going to the RGV for about seven months after being out of the circuit for awhile. The day use areas including a say use park their responsible for keeping the area clean emptying the trash barrels. cleaning the rest rooms and opening, closing the park. The park is just day use with two full hookup camp host sites. They also have a ltr on the beach with access to a state fish pier. Which is dry camping. Their may be dumpsters provided for trash. Their host site has full hookup. Their is also a town park nearby with dump and water stations. They also sell wood and ice at the park office. The office is also a little camp store. That is a lot of work to do, my wife and myself have campground hosted at Algonquin Park in Ontario Canada. Generally it’s for a week or two period, with very little duties all you were required to do was to travel around the campground and check permits on the post for their departure date and report to the office in the morning. Then we would do the same thing later that evening. You were required to remain on your site for certain length of time to answer questions campers had or provide information. For this we received free camping for the period that you were there. Little update we did not have to confront any campers as there was security there, park wardens which we would report to them if there was any issues. I would say you really were taken advantage of.

They answer questions and also have a washer/dryer for use by the bathrms. The rest of the wk is theirs to enjoy. Why people destroy facilities to make their life easier is beyond comprehension! We ran a state rest area...it was destroyed everyday!!! I agree people are so disrespectful. I can not Understand why people act that way. They “love” nature and camping but just trash the place. Why do people go in nature and throw water bottles and trash on the ground? I too thought camp hosting would be a lot of work but would be rewarding. It’s not. People trash the bathrooms and the park knowing full well someone has to clean them. My husband and I volunteered at Eden Gardens in Santa Rosa Florida and people would throw confetti and glitter all over the place taking photos… little do they care what that does to wild life and the people that take care of the grounds.

Well, in my humble opinion, a Camp Host should be prepared to stay in place at all times, except for the times they have to leave their site to go shopping for the supplies they need, otherwise, a Camp Host, again, and in my humble opinion, is there and available 24/7 for the campers' needs and their general safety while at the campground. The Camp Site Host positions are normally seasonal, so asking a person or couple to stay at least 4 months or for the duration of a season is reasonable.

Boy, anytime someone has to repeat, "in my humble opinion", you can bet they are anything but humble. How entitled to think anyone should be at your beck and call 24/7. Camp Hosts should set hours. If the campground didn't do it, then the Host should feel free to. 20hrs a week is 4 hrs a day. 25-30 is 5-6 hour days. That seems reasonable to me. They are not employees, they're volunteering. This campground treated their volunteers like indentured servants.

Campground that has the rule that host are not to get involve with campers other than pleasantries is good. If a problem exists only a ramger handles it. Look for those rules. 25 hrs is too much. 20 hrs are my limit unless paid $ in addition to FHU. Have to be picky.

Hi Guys, great video. People are unbelievable! Perhaps before hosting, one should stay at the campsite as a guest to see what life is like there. This way, you can make an assesment of the work load, type of visiters, bathroom cleaning contracted out, leadership quality and general "wierdness factor". Another tip might be to make it conditional "Ill host if you hire a second host at the same time or before I start!" In other words, solving the problems ahead of time. Then, though campgrounds won't like it, but maybe 3-month terms would be better -- 3-month terms and two hosts. Tip number four: You might want to ask first if the campsite is in a Republican or Democrat state -- 'nough said !! God bless !!!

The problem was that you did not set hours for your 25/30 hours a week. There should have been a set schedule for everything - set times to clean the showers, bathrooms, and hours for the office. That's why you don't camp host at state owed parks. State parks suck. Federally owned national forest campgrounds are better in a way, you have more freedom. Host stay for free. Campers stay for $20 a night (non electic) and $27 (electric) in my campground there is the upper loop which is mine, with 11 rv & tent sites and 4 tent only sites. The upper loop (ran by the other host) has about 25 rv & tent sites (which we help one another out if needed.) We have water, electric, and sewage on host sites, two or more hosts per campground. We do not SELL anything to campers including firewood. If no host is available we get help from neighboring campground host. We have maintenance workers, janitorial staff who cleans the bathhouse ever 2 to 3 days, grounds keepers, local law enforcement and national forest LEOs for help. We only do light cleaning of bathhouses and maintaining camp grounds, check people in, change signs on camp site posts, explain rules and give information. We have the right to cancel reservations, kick people out, and banned them from the entire national forest if they break any rules. We have quiet hours from 10pm to 6am and if they are being loud and disturbing their neighbors then we'll give them an ultimatum, quiet down, or leave. We can set our own schedule as long as our signs are out by 2pm we're good. Only difference is, we dont get paid.

I personally avoid camp grounds period ! My personal idea of camping is escape from people and enjoy nature ! camp grounds usually pack as many sites as possible ... people are forced to habitat so close to each other .. & most of these folks are emotionally living out a fantasy that they have in side of their head .. & it's like being in love with the idea of going camping .. & it often seems the majority of those who tag along with the adventurer isn't really on board & not into camping in the first place ! To these folks it's a dirty environment & they have no clue & don't really care about camp educate .. & than there's some folks who don't realize they bring along all the internal issues bottled up within them which than becomes aggravated & irritated & than surfaces ... every walk of life has their own ideals fantasy about camping ... the party types are usually very loud and disruptive when others seek quiet time & nature sounds not human noise ! The busy body types the complainers & controllers are ugly too ! I desire to get away from people not camp next to them !

Hi Lee, we actually prefer boondocking ourselves. However, there are times we need to go back to a campground to get our laundry done, nice long hot showers, batch cooking, etc. But we agree, a lot of campgrounds are way too overcrowded which goes against the whole happy camping experience of getting away from society. See travels!

@@AlwaysOnLiberty I agree with enjoying a hot long shower .. I like to pop in & pay for just the shower @ move on .. laundry mats is another quicky .. its better when not on a weekend & early morning during the week .. I avoid the people seen .. nature is more honest & less demanding .. much easier to abide with .. listening & observing .. living with it not against it .. respectfully

Agree with you, Lee, campgrounds are a crowd of people "pretending" to be camping but really, just burning up wood and drinking to excess and letting their children and dogs run around without supervision while they blast their outside speakers, leaving a mess and destruction in their wake. There is so little etiquette left these days. I absolutely prefer boondocking.

I would never want to be a camp host. Conflict is not my thing. I would be too nervous about handling unruly campers.

Hi Merideth, thank you so much for watching. Yes, we're the same way. And people today, yikes!! While there are others that do well with it, it's not our game either. Be safe out there and stay well.

Oh man, I'm so sorry to hear that. We love Michigan. We're kind of absent campers; we park and go out and do stuff. We rarely use their services. But, lessons learned. Thanks for watching!

What a shame your host experience was so bad. My husband talks about hosting, I am not interested. But, we always camp in Georgia State parks. The host sites have sewer, there are almost always two hosts to share the duties, etc. The location where you were sounds very poorly run & of course, some campers can be real pigs. Thankfully, after 7 years of camping, it's rare I have seen such behavior. Most hosts we talk with in the Georgia parks really enjoy doing it & do a wonderful job. Only have seen a couple of dud hosts! I hope if you try it again, you have a much more pleasant experience!! Look into Moccasin Creek State Park in northeast Georgia mountains!

Thank you Myrna for your amazing positive note. We 'may' Camp Host down the road but right now, we're more mobile than ever. But, we have the highest respect of our Camp Hosts wherever we go because we totally appreciate and understand the implications of the job, Campground Managers and guests. Thank you for the recommendation. We may very well end up in your neck of the woods of Georgia! We fell in love with some of the Campgrounds near Toccoa! Safe travels and we love your input!

I’d rather sleep for free boondocking than have to camp host. I watch our camp hosts in our Florida campground and that’s a no for me.

Sounds the same all over. Take advantage of camp hosts... people can be nice, some are just out there and have no regards for the rules and they can do whatever they want.

That's so sad, isn't it? We agree. It used to be we could all trust each other and have fun. Now, we don't know who our neighbors are. No self accountability anymore.

CJThunder, we couldn't really due to financial issues at the time. We had to make it work. But, our hard-paid lessons are handed off to others who watch and listen so they don't have the same experience. It was a tough lesson. Please be safe out there. We appreciate you watching.

You can be worked to death because of lack of staffing due to poor management. Always ask how many work campers are currently on staff and how many are staffed at the same time continuously. If there's a gap between outgoing and incoming workers, you may find yourself doing the work of 4, 5, 6 or more people, which is physically impossible. If a position turns out to be more work than agreed upon, management has broken the contract. You have every right to move on. Good, reliable work campers are a very valuable asset. Don't allow yourself to be taken advantage of and abused. As for your resume', leave a bad host gig off of it and use solid personal references or previous positive host position contacts as references.
