I've noticed that one of the most common mistakes IMHO, is wearing brighter, whiter shade of white than your teeth and your eye whites - next to your face. Any shade of white which competes with your teeth and eye-white color makes them look darker and even more 'less white'/more yellow. I may be excessively picky, but I also find that eye-white and teeth white shouldn't be much different. If you had your teeth bleached or dental work done and you choose much brighter white shade comparing to your eye-whites, your eyes may look tired and blurry. The most common mistake, IMO is well known trick how to make your eyes look more awake and less tired/red, by putting white or light nude/beige/purplish eyeliner in lower water line. Once your water line is lighter than your eye-white, your eyes will look even more blurry and tired. Even the darkest eye white looks more clear and bright next to darker liner than to light one. Never compete with your natural coloring when it comes to white shades that you wear on your face or next to your face. Also, be careful with white and red shades next to your face if your skin is not clear, especially if it has uncovered redness/blemishes. Highlights also can be tricky if the skin is not clear. Best regards to all! :)

That's my experience. I have a slightly warm skintone and once I used an ash brown color on my hair - it deadened my skintone. I need warmth in my hair color or my skin looks gray. I've seen this happen sometimes when women's natural hair color loses its intensity with age; their skintone looks grayer.
@MartinaGiovese4 жыл бұрын
Oh I had this same experience. My hair was ash blonde and I went in to get a more caramel-colored dye just to warm it up a little, not make it any darker. I think a HUGE colour mistake I see on the daily is girls/women who use a very muddy or dark brown contour under their cheekbones which looks like bicycle tracks on their face. Looks TERRIBLE up close or in daylight. I use a slightly darker (2 shades) olive powder foundation as heavy contouring looks a bit shit on me tbh even though I have strong cheekbones. It looks very subtle and almost undetectable. Horrendous painted eyebrows are still a big thing with all age groups. Very scary!!! 😱😱😱😭😭😭😟😟😟
@napkingod41244 жыл бұрын
This. They also use like a dark mauve or maroon lipstick that is matte. Nothing else, only matte. Then it's that super dark muddy contour topped off with a heavy stark white highlighter and they ALWAYS have the ashy balayage hair. I swear to god it's like a specific "look" because i see this combination so frequently, but it is just not a good one. Plus crayon eyebrows in ashy colour with a warm or olive heavy foundation. It is a THING.

Most noticeable color mistake: women bleach their hair, then dye it dark blue, then wash it once, so it looks like a washed out, bleached green.
@audreyyoung45564 жыл бұрын
is that a mistake or a natural evolution of how demi permanent deposited color evolves on a bleached canvas
@JenniferSnaps4 жыл бұрын
@@audreyyoung4556 It's mostly a mistake on the level of bleach the canvas has before applying the color. Some people don't bleach their hair enough before applying a color, it's more common in blue since any yellow tone the hair might still have will be more noticeable when the layers of blue get washed away and the color on top (semi permanent dye doesn't penetrate the hair) is lets the color of the hair itself be seen. It also can happen with ashy hair dye, since that one has a blue tone.
@raygin65814 жыл бұрын
Well what are they supposed to do? Not wash their hair? What is the mistake there?
@NewsAddict184 жыл бұрын
Common mistake.
@YourMajesty1434 жыл бұрын
Well, the 1st mistake is not getting the right level of bleach to lift all color out the hair. The 2nd mistake is that despite getting the shade lifted, they didn't eliminate any yellow tones or brassiness. It needs to be an ash blonde, a white, or silver base. The other factor is that most blue dyes are always going to fade green, bc they have green undertones. A true blue dye won't fade to green. However, often it does help to add 1/4 plum or violet dye to neutralize any yellow in the dye. Another issue is hair that's overprocessed and porous tends to absorb toners, which makes them difficult to wash out. And that can be a problem if there's still some yellow in the dye that the bleach didn't lift or that the dye-mix didn't neutralize, bc then that yellow tint in the hair will combine with the toner's blue/purple residue, which leads to green hair. What needs to happen is first the overprocessed/porous hair needs to be treated ahead of time (at least a few times before) with a deep condition. A week later when getting the hair bleached, it's best to mix in a bonding agent like Olaplex or Bondi Boost to prevent breakage. Instead of a toning shampoo, it's preferable to rinse the bleach using a clarifying shampoo -- or if possible, to mix a little bit of powdered bleach into shampoo, and then wash out the hair. This step is mainly focused on helping to remove overtones. The use of toner (after coloring) will focus on eliminating any remaining undertones. Also for hair that's too porous, one should condition the hair after washing out the bleach in order to further close the hair cuticles and reduce the porosity. This is just to prevent uneven coloring or any absorption of color build-up from toner. This way the toner's colors (whether blue or purple) don't latch unto the hair to the point that they mix with any remaining yellow. I know it sounds counterintuitive since toner is supposed to neutralize the yellows, but if the yellow undertones are too overpowering, then it's best to prevent any residue build-up in the first place. Just make sure to wash toner out completely or skip using it altogether. At this point, the blue dye should be applied and washed with a toner (if necessary) or cleansing cream. A hair mask applied after can help to keep the hair healthy and completely close the cuticle so that the dye won't fade as fast. As long as these steps are done, using toning shampoos to maintain the color shouldn't be a problem. The only exception is if the shower is built with copper pipes, which can leave deposits that make the hair brassy and green. Also avoid chlorine and salt-water beaches/lakes. As stated prior, to prevent the blue from fading during maintenance, it's best to wash with a purple shampoo or toner -- but also it helps to use a color-protecting conditioner. A bit of blue dye can be added into the conditioner, but of course that can only do so much. As with most color deposits, color touch-ups are necessary to maintain the color's vibrancy. ✂️ ⬇️ ✂️ ⬇️ ✂️ ⬇️ ✂️ ⬇️ ✂️ ⬇️ ✂️ ⬇️ ✂️ ⬇️ ✂️ ⬇️ ✂️⬇️ ✂️ ⬇️ ✂️⬇️ ✂️ Refresher: If hair is healthy, then proceed to lift to level 9 or 10 for best blue coloring. If hair is overprocessed/porous, get deep conditioning treatments 1x a week for at least 3 wks prior to bleaching. Make sure hair has all yellow tones lifted, but if that's too damaging, then add binding agent to bleach (and prepare a mix of violet/plum dye to blue dye). Wash bleach with clarifying shampoo and if hair is too porous, also wash with a bit of conditioner. Dry thoroughly. Color with prepared dye-mix and let set for appropriate time before washing with cleansing cream. If color appears brassy, wash with purple toner. Apply hair mask or protective conditioner to close cuticles. Continue using toner/purple shampoo and protective conditioner for maintenance. And if necessary, add a bit of dye to conditioner between color touch-ups. Avoid exposure to copper-pipes, chlorine, and salt-water to prevent oxidization.

Another mistake I can think of is when ladies have artificial hair colours and still dress as if they didn't have them. For example, if red usually looks great on you, it won't look that good the second you die your hair pink. Or having blue hair when you have green eyes. They tend to cancel each other so none of them stands out. Wearing lipstick that is too light doesn't look good either: sometimes ladies go for a strong eye makeup and pick a skin-like lip colour, so they look like they're about to die lol
@edennis85784 жыл бұрын

In photography and in real life, black eyeliner is not for everyone, just as black hair does not flatter everyone. The eye tends to go to the darkest and lightest parts of what it sees, and a solid black line painted across the eyelids of someone whose hair is not black or dark brown is not nearly as flattering as shades such as bronze, dark brown, deep maroon or dark grey (depending on hair coloring, skin tone and contrast level).

Another color mistake is bright and cool colors on warm muted skintones with dark hair. In other words, confusing dark haired True Autumns with winter seasons.

You are right, most of them are such old mistakes... but I think some are just current fashion trends. Like those mismatched make up or hair colours, I think nowadays some people intentionally do that to get that artificial look or exaggerate it. If you look at gen Z instagrammers etc. you'll see it's pretty widespread, especially with lipsticks it's been going on for good several years. People just put all those fantasy colours like dark green, dusty pale blue etc. without taking their natural colouring into consideration, because they even appreciate when it stands out more. Personally I prefer always going for harmonising colours, even in unnatural and fantasy make up, but I think they're doing it on purpose.

What about women 50 and up that are cool and clear? I have read that an ash brown can be too draining on older skin and that they will need some warmth in hair color? Warm tones of any kind seem to wash me out, so i am not sure what to do.

I find a little blush can soften sharp features. You can also try lowering the cheek contour to make the cheek seem fuller (though it hasn’t worked for me).

I think when wearing lipstick, it is important to not make it harsh- if it is a strong colour blend the edges, so they are not that sharp. I often see ladies, who I think would look much better if they did this, or they just choose a bit more muted colour, not so bright. I think blush could also help, maybe applied more on the apple, bit rounder, not so much in an angle and not towarsd the ear. In my opinion the strong, and also two filled in in the front and end part on the eyebrows is often to harsh on women. Maybe a lighter application, diffused powder would look softer. I think Jennifsr Anniston would be a good face to look at. I think she has masculine feature, but her make up is always soft. Imagine her with a dark red lipstick, sharp edges. It would apear like she has strict features. Usually she has soft lipstick, much better! I hope I could help!

Important rule of thumb: darkening something pushes it back in space, lightening something brings it forward. That's why people put highlighter on their browbone, along the highest point of their cheekbone, etc., and put contour UNDERNEATH the cheekbone, on the sides of the nose and so forth - the highlighter brings the highest points of the face forward and the contour pushes the hollows in further, creating more contrast and depth, thus sharpening and, well...contouring the face. So if you want the opposite, do the reverse. Blush should go more on the apples of your cheeks rather than the top of the cheekbone; avoid deep toned contour and bronzer if you use it at all, and avoid using it on the planes of your face that you feel are already too exaggerated. Use a brighter concealer and highlighter all along the sides of your nose and bring it out along the inner cheek to soften and flatten the entire area and bring it all forward. Check out actors and models who have similar features to you and pay attention to the placement of blush and highlighter on their softer, more feminine looks.

I would love for you to make a video on the warm roots problem, with product recommendations. Like you, I love ashy blond hair, but I can't afford to do my roots every month at a hair salon... so I buy a supermarket coloration pack, usually ashy/soft blond, but it's always kind of orangey.

Aly, it’s very difficult to keep this ashy tone. I have a very strong pigment and ashy tone just doesn’t last. Any suggestions? I’ll try darker ash tones for toning. That was a good tip you gave. Also, can you please give an advice which bleach and colour to use to achieve your colour. In lockdown I’m doing my colour and I’m lost a little bit as I would love to move from yellowish to more ashy , similar to yours. I’ve been looking at L’Oréal professional.

So interesting! I always noticed I like low contrast on my face personally, but heard everywhere higher contrast is more attractive. I have very round face and fair features so after what you said now it makes sense why I think my 'moth' look is prettier on me than contrast lol. Same thing with muted. I much prefer those colours as opposed to bright on me. You've clarified so much thank you x

I'm a Bright/Clear Winter and I love Japanese Igari makeup with red blush across eyes, nose bridge. I think it looks fantastic on Winters like me as we have pale/cool light olive skin with very contrasted brown/black/white hair and clear eyes. It's a very fun youthful look. I'm 38 and love bold pink/red/purple eyeshadow. My eyes are steel/silver grey so it looks pretty cool.

Hi Aly, is olive skin automatically muted? or can it be clear as well?
@susanholl59944 жыл бұрын
Olive skin is not automatically muted. It's more about the contrast between depth of color in hair vs skin. If you look at Audrey a la mode channel she has sort of medium olive toned skin and black hair and is clear. Dark olive skin and dark hair together is muted as is light olive skin and cool brown hair together. Alexandra's girly talk made a video recently about color that did an especially good job of explaining clear vs soft.
