I was a teen in the late 80s and early 90s! We used the sponge eyeshadow applicators that came with the makeup and had to heat up our eyeliner with a lighter to get it to go on easier - makeup has come a LONG WAY since then!

I was only born in '95 but some of my earliest memories are watching my mother do her makeup in the last years of the 90's. She liked to explain what she was doing while she was doing it and, among other things, I can still remember her saying she preferred liquid eyeliner over a pencil because it was easier to apply. For some reason the 3-4-year-old me found it odd. Almost 20 years later I get my explanation. Ha ha interesting.

Something about the eighties was we didn't usually contour the way we do now. People contoured with blush. Kits would come with three blush shades. Dark for under the cheekbone, medium for where we now apply blush and light for where we today apply highlight. BUT, they were ALL shimmery blush shades in the same family. Same with eyshadow kits. Usually three shades of, blue, silver, purple or pink VERY frosty colors in a kit. Very colorful eyeshadow. I think winging the eyeliner started in the early nineties. We wore heavy black or colored eyeliner pencils. Many people wore liner on the water line. Frosty pink lipstick. Frosty everything. Great job, though!

There was winging but it was more somthing you saw on models or celebrities normal people wheren't. If you look at fashion magazines the models often have eye shadow winged out all the way to there hair line

Spot on with the blush and eyeshadow! I remember all the excitement at Christmas when the new Estée Lauder makeup boxes were released. We tried to use all the colors...all the way up to the brows! Glamorous!

Love all of your videos! And this one was pretty accurate. I grew up in the 80s and became obsessed with makeup (due to my mom's red nails and her Revlon lipsticks). All I have to say is thank you for being able to portray the way we used to do it right then. There was no such thing as contouring as we do today, instead we had draping, or blush contouring, which is what makes 80s makeup so striking today. Your rendition of eyeshadow was exact...everything went up to the brow and the temples in sort of a fiery, geometrical way. Thanks Aly, you are awesome!

Yep, this is basically how we did it! lol the eyeshadow all the way to the brow... I don't think any of us realized we had eyebrows back then, so they were unruly... The blush right up the side of the face. Wonderful job!

Once again you nailed t! And I bring this up once more, but many young women on KZbin have attempted to do 80s makeup tutorials and most of them are so inaccurate. The harsh colours, the rouge, the oversprayed hair and of course when they think 80s, they put on a giant bow on their head. I guess it's because most of those m girls weren't born in the 80s or have watched too much saved by the bell. Nonetheless, you are historically accurate. You did your research, the earrings remind me of Escada's costume jewelry which was very popular in the 80s. The hair was the right tease, the colour palette you wore was exactly what women were wearing--not those bright neon colours. Great work! Going to subscribe! :)

Yes, I was a young woman in the 80s, so have lived through many decades. I didn't know people who looked like Cyndi Lauper, and of course no one looked like the pictures we see of fashion models from that time period. I can't remember ANYONE wearing a bow on her head. The problem is that people think the advertising and entertainment industries reflected the reality, whereas those are just fantasy businesses, always using gross exaggeration to attract attention. People say the dumbest things about the 80s, and also about the 60s and 70s. Woodstock only became a big well known thing much later than the event. I was in high school at the time, and didn't know a thing about it. What I miss most about those time periods is that the stores carried far more variety of colors and clothes than we get today. The 80s in particular had very wonderful fabrics that were combinations of excellent quality cottons sometimes alone, but also mixed with polyester in blends that wore fabulously and had much better feel to them. Today's textiles are paper-thin, terribly clingy, and really only flatter a very narrow percentage of the female population. I miss all the natural fibers we had in the 80s and 90s, the wools, silks, etc.

I was born in 1982, most of my memories I have that involve the 1980s was pretty much the mid-late 1980s. You are right though, most people, especially where I lived, had more of a preppy middle-of-the-road style. Plus, it helped that I had an Aunt and cousins who were teens in the 1980s. Anything exceeding that was in the minority. Most of what I've seen as far as accuracy goes has more to do with the late 1980s-early 1992

Your video is the most accurate 80's makeup tutorial video that I have found on youtube so far. Everything is spot on, with only one exception, and that would be, that most women didn't apply their eyeshadow all the way up to their temples. Mainly cover models had their eyeshadow applied that way for a dramatic effect for magazine photo shoots. Other than that, everything is exactly right for how women commonly wore their makeup back then. I love it! Even your eyebrows look 80's.

This is really good. You remind me of Blondie a little. Quite accurate and spot on with those colors. A lot of people, including myself, that were growing up in the time were doing that “ smoke out “ with the gray . I had a fun time trying to master it , didn’t always work for me. Fantastic, I was an 80's teenager and I had hairstyles from a very short "Wedge" cut then it grew out and I used to crimp it, I now have some mini crimpers :-) and then later in 87 I had a perm which was a disaster haha and lots of black eyeliner in the 80's, your hair looks great xxx

Very authentic tutorial. I was born in the 80s and judging from my mom pictures back then she did her makeup same as you: The eyeshadows were blended to the brows, blush applied in a stong line not really blended, it actually looked really good. not sure if this style will be back one day.

The 80s was my generation. Your right on point with eyes and blush. However, I never contoured. I don't recall many contouring until the hair bands came out. Lol. Good job.

the finished product looks accurate, but we achieved it differently. I dont think 80s teens had the tools she was using, (I know I didnt) I didnt smudge the bottom liner, Me and a lot of others only drew the bottom liner to the middle of our eyes. But like I said, what she did looks pretty close.

Ina Interstate I was born in '95 so i wouldn't know but my parents were teens in the 1980s and so I was exposed to alot of 80s contemporary styles. I'd say she's the only one who's even close to being accurate here on KZbin. Also thanks for sharing this info, I think if someone wants to do accurate 80s make up its best to ask someone who's actually lived in the decade.
