My TTArtisan 500mm for Nikon Z mount arrived today and I was pleasantly surprised to find that the lens foot does now have an integrated Arca Swiss plate. It looks like they cut the grooves into the sides of the foot yours has.

I picked up this lens the day it was available on B&H, of course the moon is in a new moon phase by me right now, but I was able to capture Jupiter with it, you can just make out the rings on the little bright dot in frame. I have it paired with an a6600, so an equivalent of 750mm. I'm very excited for the full moon at the end of this month.

a full moon is sick in it's own right, but for a more dramatic shot of the craters it's best to capture it when the moon it's a half moon, astrophotography got me into astrophotography, so that's my source of that looking amazing :)

Good video. I got a 2x teleconverter for my ef 75-300. My last moon photo was with that lens. I tested the teleconverter on the tripod by taking a picture of the end of our street at over 1000 feet (300 meters) and everything looked good at f/5.6. I am going to try a day time moon shot soon.

Has been awhile but glad to see you and the lens! We all start somewhere in learning how to do the many genres and moon photography is a long learning curve over time. You forgot one very important thing - Always do the rising moon the day before the full moon for the sun has not yet set and its light will give light to the foreground getting lower ISO's and faster SS. Also for sharper images of the moon SS/ISO both equal and uses f/8 to f/11 for sharpest f/ you will see when using the camera zoom function like focusing on stars. 500mm is a good place for an image will also have stars that make it real not blended in a program. The key is to be far away from the horizon as possible. This lens will enable someone to do Lunar Eclipses, I did my first with a foreground bridge and river with an old Canon FD (film lens) 100-300mm using a $20 adapter with the A7S in 2015. Another point is the moon is moving so a longer lens will show movement on the edges like using the Sony FE 200-600mm with a 2X teleconverter and in APS-C mode you get a 1800mm full frame image where SS has to be fast and you get no stars. From experience with that lens just stay at 600mm for you can always crop a 600mm image. A very important reminder if blending in another image that may give it away as a blended image is the moon wobbles as it goes across the sky to point of setting it will twist almost 40 degrees to the right at setting. You will see it when doing a 8 hour eclipse and also during an eclipse at mid point you will be pointing straight up so be ready to be on your belly or back to view and track and it is 8 hours of constant movement if a tracker is not used again remember even on a tracker your lens and camera will be pointing straight up so plan where your tripod sticks are. Practice the night before. Winter will be a long night and summer maybe short. Seeing the real images will be the reward and the fun.

the 11mm f2.8 is great for astro-time lapsing, with the smaller filterstack of the Nikon Z, it works great, on the Sony cams with a thicker filterstack you see some field curvature at f2.8

Wow lots of food for thought here, Lumix S pro 70-200 f2.8 + 2x tele = £2,700 vs TT Artisan 500mm f6.3 £400 pre-order 🤔🧐 the price difference 😵 Lumix 22 elements in 17 groups (1 aspherical lens, 3 ED lenses, 2 UED lenses) x2 tele 7 lenses including 2 UHR lenses in 4 groups TT Artisan 8 elements in 5 groups, including 2 extra-low dispersion glass and 2 high index glass. The lumix setup i found dissapointing for DSO if anyones interested🙊 Halo ring and Vignette in centre thats hard to remove with flats, bias Great video Alyn, couple of questions... how does it perform when the moon is higher in the sky with less atmospheric distortion and would it attach to a tele converter to make it 1000mm ?😎 very interesting vid 👍

I have had good luck with some of these cheaper fully manual lenses (TT Artisan, and7 Artisan - different companies). They aren't the lightest, or most compact, but they are very inexpensive for what you are getting. They remind me of some of the German and Japanese glass from 30 years ago. I had the same reaction to "wow this isn't perfect? eh... $140 lens. whatever." Like they will get you 80% of a pro lens for 1/10 to 1/5 the price.

I've been curious about this lens for lunar photography. I've seen it reviewed by a couple of other people, but not exclusively for nighttime photography. For marking the portrait orientation point, try a white marker. I use white markers on a lot of my gear for any number of things. And if you do it carefully and do it well, it'll look like it was made that way, if you're concerned about resale value.

I think a manual focus lens would be a challenge for sports and wildlife where the subject often moves erratically. The Sony 200-600 is another consideration. Not as much as the 100-400, but more than Tamron and Sigma lenses

I get quite acceptable moon pics with an old Vivitar 300mm f5.6 lens and a Sony APSC mirrorless A6000 (so effectively 450mm). Got the lens off eBay for £30 and and adaptor for £15. The main disadvantage of the TT Artisans lens is the focus ring is stiff and difficult to use without moving the camera which is a real problem when used for wildlife photography.

The whole stick when mirrorless first became a thing was being so compact compared to DSLRs. They probably regret that now (you can even see how their mirrorless cameras got bigger and bigger over time). Canon and Nikon learned from Sony's mistake, but they were first to market with it and are still pioneering.

Seems like a stretch for them to say it’s a moon photography lens. To get a decent frame you need 2500-3500mm aka telescope. I suppose a significant crop on the 500 would be good for internet and 5x7 prints?

14:23 - They remind you of Samyang back in the day. What do you mean by this? This sounds like they're no longer offering them. I have a couple and as far as I know they're still being made. They have a few names as most know; Samyang, Rokinion, Bower. Did I miss some news? They didn't go out of business, did they? They're prices and lenses seem to be getting even better, last I knew. Hey, speaking of which, it's too bad they don't make some tele lenses.
@matej.mlakar
@matej.mlakar Жыл бұрын
I think Alyn explains it quite well: Samyang started out by offering cheap manual focus, manual aperture lenses with good optical performance and TTatrisan seems to follow that recepie. Now Samyang offer autofocus premium lenses too.
@dw.in.michigan
@dw.in.michigan Жыл бұрын
I hesitate to speak for him, but I would assume he was referring to TTArtisans' relative standing in the lens market... not as well-known, but making acceptable quality glass that's budget-friendly. Samyang still makes their iconic 14mm lens, but they've improved their lineup as well as their overall quality and standing in the lens market. And no, I'm not trying to be a lens snob, most of my primes are fully manual Samyang. And because I'm an extra glutton for punishment, most of my Samyang lenses are cine lenses.
@Warrior_Resisting_Colonialism

Yeah I asked Nico (Nebula Photos) and he recommended the Svbony SV48 90mm which is 500mm and similar price. However with scopes you need to then pick up field flatteners, adapters to mount to your camera and being dovetail they won't work with most conventional photography gear. They're also bigger heavier and bulkier. I decided to leave this info out of the video as I'm no expert on telescopes and didn't want to risk giving bad advice.

I dont think its that "affordable", its basically a corrected 500mm APO refractor telescope refitted directly with a camera mount in my opinion. Also, 300$+ sounds expensive anyways for mainly moon shots, and you can not do much more than this without proper tracking or even better, guiding. For 300$ i got a 2nd hand 750mm F4 newtonian on a Skywatcher EQ3-2 mount with motors. +200$ later (guiding camera, cables, adapters,....) i had a nearly fully automated astrophotography setup with 750mm on Full Frame camera and 1200mm on APS-C. The 1200mm with 32MP were hard to handle for the old, not that precise mount as well for the telescope too much resolution, but 750mm on 26MP were guided good enough and the results were AMAZING (considering 500$ in total excluding the DSLR/mirrorless camera) If it would have autofocus at least, better AF + OIS... it would be even interesting for 500$, but manual only, so very limited usecases for fixed 500mm... nope, not even for 300$. A Sigma 150-600 you can get 2nd hand for 500$ as well, for cheaper even an older 150-500. I think in the market are actually too much good telezooms and primes at affordable price points and most/all of them have autofocus and a lot a good image stabiliser. Im not the guy advertising higher priced stuff, but instead of this 500mm 6.3 manual lens you better save up a few more $ and get something more versatile/usable.

I love how these photographers are masterb@ting themselves over this 500mm lens. It's like they have never seen this before. A cheap 500mm manual lens. Hmmmmm, I have seen them in pawn shops for $20 for 20 years, some even had coatings and took nice pictures. The hate they got..... but when TT artisan does it....its an orgy that forgets about size, weight, stability, manual focus, apature. It's almost like kamala harris running for office, all the bad things they complained about are not even mentioned even if they are still there.
