Important distinction: Replicants aren’t robots in the sense of being machines. They’re completely organic, but not made the traditional way, engineered, custom made. An early version of the movie actually gave them a definition that made that a bit clearer. _Synthetic humans having skin/flesh._ With the terms robot and android being labelled as antique and obsolete, respectively. It’s all just talk to get around the ethics of slave labor. “We made them in labs, they’re not real people, they don’t have souls, so we can make them do as we please.” So when you ask something like “What if he just killed a human?” _He did!_ Roy (leader), Pris (acrobatic pleasure model), Leon (the guy one who was questioned), Zhora (the snake dancer). And Rachel was the extra one not part of the rebel group. Roy wasn’t aware of her and was only referring to their group Yes, Rachel confirmed the owl was artificial “At least try to pull your hand back through!” He couldn’t because replicants are stronger. Roy pierced his hand because his death was approaching and he was malfunctioning from deterioration, so he inflicted pain to stabilize himself. How does having an injured hand an therefore unable to hold onto things properly make you an idiot? 😵‍💫🤣 Dominant hand injured, gun lost, opponent crazed and much stronger. And you ask why he doesn’t just kill him instead of running away? Deckard had a dream about a unicorn, at the end he discovers Gaff was in his place and left an origami unicorn. How would Gaff know about his dream? This implies Deckard is a replicant and the unicorn is an implanted memory. There’s one other small thing supporting the idea. The glow of the replicant’s eyes, which you saw in Deckard’s eyes briefly This has been theorized about for years, branching into other theories. Like maybe all Blade Runners are replicants, or Deckard has some of Gaff’s memories and that’s how he knows about the unicorn and why he seems to dislike Deckard so much. Something to keep in mind when you watch 2049. Only the Nexus 6 models had the 4 year life span. Rachel’s number wasn’t specified

Great answer friend, but one minor correction. Roy's death wasn't a "malfunction." He was designed to have a 4 year lifespan. It was probably some variation of the virus he and Tyrrell were discussing earlier that is implanted in all human Replicants.

In the PK Dick story, there's already a subculture of androids existing in LA, with their own police force and detectives that use a VK style test. Deckard and his opposite do the tests on each other, but it isn't revealed what the results are when they part ways.

Replicants aren't human. The Voight-Kampff test still shows them as thinking differently from humans. That's the big one. But also they've been engineered to be stronger, more agile and have shorter life spans than humans. What are they then? And are they a sentient life form even if not precisely human? And if they aren't a sentient life form, at what point during their further development do they tip that particular scale? At the Rachel level where it takes far more questions for the test to reveal her nature? Even more advanced than that? I don't know the answers to those questions. Nobody really does, which is what makes Blade Runner so good.

Blade Runner is quite literally a perfect film. The script, the cast, the design, the soundtrack are all top tier. It is a genuine masterpiece; not just of sci-fi, but of cinema in general. I studied theatre & film design at the same art college Ridley Scott attended. The opening sequence of the LA skyline is based upon the oil refineries & blast furnaces that stand on the Tees Estuary near Middlesbrough, North East England. Scott grew up in the area & the post apocalyptic skyline left a lasting impact on him. When I was at art college, I used to walk down the beach at dusk just to see the flames & lights on the estuary. It was both beautiful & nightmarish at the same time. When I was in LA, I visited the Bradbury Building, which is where they filmed some of the sequences of JF Sebastian’s apartment; mainly the exterior & the Art Deco lifts. Please make sure you watch Blade Runner 2049!! It’s soo soo good….& my god seeing it in IMAX mindblowing. To answer any questions about the darkness. The atmosphere has become so polluted, that it’s almost a perpetual twilight. Also due to the collapse of the environment, there’s been wide spread extinction of animals; which is what was alluded to in the first meeting with Rachel & also why there’s people making synthetic animals. Also, classic BBC sci if comedy series Red Dwarf played homage to Blade Runner in their final series; the photograph analysis was one thing & also, the Tyrell building showed up in the London skyline 😂 Daryl Hannah recreated her ‘Pris death throw’s’ in Kill Bill 2. Before anyone mentions the horse dream sequence ISNT a left over from Ridley Scotts ‘Legend’. Basically the horse sequence was in test screenings & was cut before release due to negative responses from the audience. The footage disappeared until the directors cut came out. Legend was released several years after Blade Runner & people just assumed it was unused footage from Legend. The main give away is that the horse aren’t the same breed 😂

The question of whether Deckard is a replicant or not depends on which version you'd watched. The Final Cut(the version you watched) confirm Deckard as a replicant because of the unicorn dream and the unicorn origami at the end . Deckard is a human in the International Cut and Theatrical Cut as they did not show the unicorn dream and both Rachel and Deckard drive up to the mountains where it was revealed by Tyrell that Rachel is special, has no expiration date so she can live like a normal human. It was a very different ending and the version I grew up with. The reason Roy put a nail through his hand is because he is expiring and his body is shutting down, he needs to feel something. There are many versions of this movie including fanedits that goes over 3 hours with a lot of footage restored even showing what happened to the Blade Runner who got shot at the start of the movie and his relationship with Deckard.

The "Like Tears in Rain" monologue was written by Rutger Hauer himself because he wasn't satisfied by the original script for his role. He presented it to Ridley Scott the evening before his shot, and Scott decided to let him do it like this. Rutger Hauer was a seriously underrated actor IMHO. Yeah, he took the cake with this one scene, definitely. Most probably the best movie scene in his long career as an actor. After this one, he specialized in doing SciFi movies and playing mostly the villains. But he got the main roles in many lower budget movies that mostly became classics just for the sake of him being in the movie and acting very well. Like "Juggers" or "The Hitcher". But he overall was a very productive actor, on tv too. He was even the main villain in "Buffy" (yeah, the highschool vampire slayer, look this one up, it was hilariously successful for a reason). When "Turkish Delight", if I remember it right, it was his second movie, already made him pretty famous in Europe, "Blade Runner" opened up for an international career also in the US. Some things you might not have gotten the first time with Blade Runner, but you did pretty good. Replicants are de facto human slaves, although being genetically designed. The final scene of the extended cut says, that she is going to survive, because Tyrell "forgot" (oh, well, maybe intentionally) to include the time-bomb genetics on her, so they have a chance to live a happy life. The police guy let them go, because he thought they would not have a long time together anyway. The glass-shattering scene is pretty impressive, because it was not faked. Actually the actress got hurt and decided to keep laying without screaming to not ruin this extraordinary shot. The soundtrack made Vangelis famous as a film composer, who later one even got an Oscar. The style of the movie set new standards in the direction of later cyberpunk. The novel by Philip K. Dick was already a cult Scifi, like most of his books, yet, it took more than a decade before someone dared to make another movie adaption of his novels, because he was so ahead of his time. Ridley Scott retconned him to be replicant in this latter edition directors cut, including the unicorn footage which has nothing to do with this movie (was an abandoned shot from LEGEND). Decker being a replicant makes no sense unless he too is a Series 6, but Rachel is the newest prototype. He can't be older and more advanced than she, at no point does Tyrell or anyone else treat him like a replicant. It's just...nonsense. It isn't in the story.

We're "told" that he is a former member of the Blade Runner unit and the Police call him back in to handle the issue of Roy and his crew but what if he is a Replicant that was just activated and all of his "memories" are implants. In the novel by Phillip K Dick, almost all of the animals in the world are dead, which is why there are robotic ones and why there are so many references to animals in the movie. Two other Harrison Form movies I'd like to suggest are Witness (1985) and Frantic (1988). Phillip K Dick has written other books that have become movies, most notably Total Recall (1990), though a lesser known novel by him, A Scanner Darkly (2006), is also quite good, starring Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder, and Robert Downey Jr.

Ngl, the casual disrespect to opening credits gave me a mild aneurysm (though I will admit these ones are a little bit dull in terms of their style and execution). But I digress. Anyway, Blade Runner - I mean what else is there that can be said that hasn't already? The film that defined the cyberpunk aesthetic, boasting an impressive cast (especially Rutger Hauer as Roy Batty), a phenomenal score by the late great Vangelis, and one of the best soliloquys in cinematic history. Some aspects haven't aged to well, most notably the relationship between Deckard and Rachel, but overall a magnificent cinematic achievement for Ridley Scott. Definitely check out the sequel Blade Runner 2049, that's arguably even better that the original. On the question of whether or not Deckard is a human or a replicant, the answer ultimately is - you decide. Personally I believe he's a human, partly because he's consistently getting overpowered by the other replicants, and partly because it fits the film's general thematic explorations. That said, there's enough evidence to suggest the latter, and the film never provides a definitive answer. For what it's worth, the people involved in making the film didn't decide on a concrete answer either - Ridley Scott is firmly on the replicant side, while Harrison Ford and Rutger Hauer sided with the human interpretation, so ultimately it's down to the audience to decide for themselves

The replicants were near the end of their 4 year life and wanted to live, that's why they killed an came back to Earth. Imagine developing adult emotions after living only 4 years, that is why Roy acts weird when he explains Leon is dead and when he discovers Pris dead body. Also the scene between Rachel and Deckard making out probably felt strange to you because you picked up on the actors not having any chemistry because they didn't like each other. Equally that works for Rachel having only limited emotional development as a replicant. Basically you watch this film a few more times to catch all the nuance, but you spotted loads on the first watch. :) Roy used the nail and put his head through the wall to use pain to counter his body seizing up because he was about to die, which made him cherish life even of his "enemy" and save Deckard. The unicorn origami implies that the Bladerunners know the dream implants of the replicants just as Deckard knew of the spider egg dream of Rachel, but it is never spelt out either way that Deckard is a replicant and the argument has raged for decades is he or isn't he a replicant.

The controversial "love" scene is misunderstood. Rachael has believed that she was human. But once she realizes the truth that she is a replicant, and her childhood memories belong to Tyrell's niece, her world is shattered. She's unable and unwilling to trust her own thoughts and feelings, as she views them with suspicion. Nothing about her is "real." Bryant tells Deckard that the Nexus-6 series is so advanced that they're capable of developing their own emotional responses, and given only a 4-year lifespan as a safeguard against emotional instability. Tyrell himself tells Deckard that Rachael, having implanted memories, is an experiment. But to what extent? As a blade runner, Deckard is not a hero. He's an executioner. It's unclear whether Deckard is actually in love with Rachael. He's obviously caught between his attraction to Rachael and his understanding that she's not what his society considers human. But he does come to care about Rachel, especially after she saves him from Leon. How he treats her in that moment and how we as an audience consider her agency and "feelings" is fascinating, complex, and deeply disconcerting. It's meant to be. It's deliberately provocative. It's asking the viewer to confront what it truly means to be human, as Deckard forces Rachael to confront and accept her own feelings as genuine. I don't think the raised consciousness we now have detracts from the scene. If anything, it heightens the tensions in it. It strikes me as one of the most challenging and powerful scenes in the film. Ford and Scott did not get along with Young during filming, which made things more difficult as much of the rougher parts of that scene were unscripted. Having watched the uncut version of it, Young herself is clearly upset afterwards.

Deckard was not asleep, he was remembering the unicorn. The origami unicorn showed that Gaff knew that memory was an implant which means Deckard is a replicant too. Ford didn't believe that but the director Ridley Scott did. If Alyska wasn't a replicant she'd have had sympathy for the replicants. Rachael thought she was human until told she wasn't. Roy and the others wanted more life than 4 years but were denied that, treated as slaves. They liked toys and playing games because they were basically 4 year olds in adult bodies.

So good. Rutger Hauer was amazing in this. The tears in the rain monologue. One of my favourite scenes. Almost Shakespearean in it's tone and delivery. 'I've seen things you people wouldn't believe... Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion... I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain... Time to die.'

The original version of this has voice overs that people complain about but they do help explain some things. I like that version because it's more obvious film noir in feel. And... it's the original. What I saw a hundred times before these other director's cut versions started getting around.

This is one of the few movies that asks questions, but doesn't give you any answers. The answers are up to you. What does it mean to be human? What makes us human? What does it mean if we create something that is more human than humans are? And so on. Is Deckard a Replicant? That Gaff seems to know Deckard dreams of unicorn and his parting words suggests so. Of course that's something Deckard could have told Gaff or someone else in the past. The scary thought? If Deckard is a Replicant, another Deckard could wake up in his apartment, thinking he has been living there for a while now, remembering his own life and the 'choices' that brought him there. it also means that Rachel and Deckard have only four years to live at the most. But the question answer to the question if Deckard is a Replicant is ultimately left to the audience.

When they had test screenings most people in the audience spent most of the movie confused. That's why the theatrical release had a voiceover. Fans of the movie say "Oh, the voiceover was terrible. It's much better without." But most of those people saw the release with the voiceover first, so they already understood it.

Pris, the replicant with big hair hiding at Sebastian’s place, is played by Daryl Hannah, whom you have also seen in the Kill Bill movies as Elle Driver. Both characters have very energetic death scenes with lots of shrieking and hammering on the floor.

The original theatrical release had a narration track by Harrison Ford. Personally, I don't understand why this was so hated by fans, but I'm sad that it was removed from future releases.

@@brom00 I agree completely. The original felt like an old time detective movie...blending with great science fiction. I also think the people who hated the narration were fans of the novel and didn't want/need the exposition. Most of the audience, however, did need it.

Ridley Scott intended to leave the fact that Decker was a replicant or not. A game existed in the 90's where you where another Blade Runner (sort of point and click). The choices you made, well... Made you a replicant, or not. You have to read a lot of Philip K. Dick to understand the sureal of it all. But it makes sense of some sort.

VCR popularity was in it's infancy. Opening credits were long to get the theater audience full of people settled down and start immersing them in the movie. I think we are MEANT to be confused throughout much of the movie. The question of whether or not Deckard was a replicant has raged for more than 40 years now. The director and screenwriters pretty much left that as an open question on purpose. For me, the film and the story it is based upon (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by Philip K Dick) pose wonderful philosophical questions about what it means to be alive and what sets us apart as humans. As much as I have loved Blade Runner for decades, I enjoyed Blade Runner 2049 even more, so I hope you will react to it.

19:32 To be clear, he didn't say he's older than Deckard, Leon asks Deckard how long he (Leon) has to live, deckard responds "Four years", and Leon says "More than you!" before trying to kill Deckard. :) Also, originally it was left vague whether Deckard is a replicant or not, but Ridley Scott has since said that he is one, and the intent behind the unicorn origami that Gaff leaves for Deckard to find is to show that he knows Deckard's dreams, because as a replicant Deckard's memories are implanted just like Rachel's (as Deckard shows when he brings up Rachel's memory of the spider eggsac that she never told anyone about.)

Some notes after finishing the video: - Roy and the other replicants are engineered to have very short life spans, so the reason Roy just dies at the end is that, well, he's *been* dying. During the entire chase sequence his body is basically giving up, and the stuff like driving a nail through his hand is basically to try and keep going by triggering a nervous system response that keeps him awake. - Gaff saying "It's too bad she won't live, but then again... who does?" also refers to Rachel since, as replicants both she and Deckard are technically not allowed on earth and will have to go into hiding to survive, and even if they do survive they (or at least she) likely have the same four-year lifespan as the other replicants in the movie. The original theatrical releases of the movie had a "happy ending" where they used leftover footage from The Shining to show Deckard and Rachel driving off into the mountains through the woods, and had Deckard narrating that actually it was fine and Rachel didn't have the four-year limited lifespan and they lived happily ever after. It was a terrible ending that the studio forced the makers to add on because they didn't think audiences would like the real ending. - In essence, Deckard has the same role as the slave hunters in Django Unchained (and in history obvs). The replicants rising up on an off-world colony is a bit like the Haitian slave rebellion where a lot of people also died, but it was for a justified cause. - The "love scene" between Rachel and Deckard *definitely* feels less romantic and more like assault to me, it kinda ruins the romance a lot IMO lol.

Eh? Ridley Scott has often insistent that he is a replicant. Many other people involved in the movie and the original novel (which is quite different) disagree. It would be most interesting if left ambiguous.

Roy is acting the way he is at the end because he has no idea how to handle his emotions. He's four years old, and has no memory implants to help guide him. At the same time he's a highly trained and capable soldier. The combination makes him... weird. And he was dying at the end. That's why his hand was messing up. He was shutting down. He used the pain to get through a few more minutes, but at the end, at the tears in the rain, he died. And yes, Rutger Hauer is an immense actor. Watch Ladyhawke for another good one with him. As to Deckard being a replicant. That's Scott's fix idea. The story is about a grey, pathetic man - he can't even get four pieces of fish with his noodles, he's so sad - who meets a combat toaster and learns what it's like to live, and meets Rachel and learns what it means to love. It's a profound and deep core theme, on which is built a pretty decent tech noir story. If Deckard is a replicant. the story is about a badly programmed toaster who learns some new tricks from other toasters, and in the end walks out on his job. Not a very interesting core premise, but then, Scott does seem to like not making any sense. One of my favorite movies, in theatrical cut. Or workprint. Or, well, any cut really.

Deckard is not a replicant in the source material by Philip K Dick. However, Ridley Scott wanted him to be and put in things that imply that, especially in the Director’s Cut. Whether one thinks he is largely depends on which version they saw first. I saw the original with the narration and without the scenes implying he was one. So, I prefer to think he isn’t, but I think most fans do think he is. I haven’t seen the remake, so I don’t know if this is revealed either way.

Bladerunner was based on the Philip K Dick Book Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. The Cop that said Deckard was under arrest at the Noodle stand was Edward J Olmos. Admiral William Adama on Battlestar Galactica. I was a junior in high school when this film came out in 1982.. If you haven't seen it review Outland, The Thing with Kurt Russell. Romancing the Stone and The Jewel of the Nile.

Roy's monologue right before he dies is beautiful and sad. It alludes to him being a slave and possibly a soldier, and how all those experiences will die and fade away along with him. It's quite moving. I heard there were a couple written versions of it, but Rutger Hauer improvised it, which is the version in the movie. It was so good the crew applauded, some even teared up.

Harrison Ford usually plays strong, silent types because it was still an archetype when he was in his prime. Male characters that acknowledged their feelings were rare back then. You see that generational difference today between those that acknowledge their feelings and those that suppress them.

23:00 When Bryant spoke about another girl, he was talking about Rachel ("Didn't even know she was a replicant!"). The half-naked dancer in the plastic jacket (Zhora) was one of the four rogues (you see her face when Bryant shows Deckard their IDs at the beginning). After he shot her, Bryant said that there were "3 left" - Deckard objected saying that there were only 2 because he knew Bryant was talkiing about Rachel (which he then confirmed). So when Roy says to Pris that there is "only two of us left now", he was referring to the fact that the Zhora and Leon (both their replicants friends) were dead

Imagine finding out you only have a 4 year life span but everyone else lives for decades, and you have literally no reference to life itself, how would you understand anything outside of your programing? Rachel was never given any experience of how to love anyone, but was recently told she's a replicant, how would you feel or react? The only person who showed any concern for her was Deckard, so she reached out to him just as a child would. A replicant without experience is virtually a child without knowledge, now imagine that child is stronger, faster and smarter than you are.

Very observant about the eyes. I hadn't caught it until I had read about the movie afterward. Whether Deckard is a replicant or not is THE question, which all involved have left ambiguous. I'm biased, but I liked the original version which had voiceovers, because it was the first version I saw. I thought it helped explain the parts that left me confused. Expert moviegoers, and even Harrison Ford himself, didn't like the voiceovers. Also, the original version shows a happy ending, which I liked. The significance of the unicorn is that the origami showed that Edward James Olmos's character was aware of Deckard's memories, the same way that Deckard knew about Rachel's spider memories.

In the book (which the film is very…very loosely adapted from) Deckard is explicitly a human. Hampton Fancher who wrote the Blade Runner screenplay wrote Deckard as a human. Harrison Ford played Deckard as a human. And despite his hardened view in later years Ridley Scott at the time of filming only said he wanted it to be ambiguous as to whether Deckard was a replicant or not. My personal view is that it doesn’t really make any narrative sense to have a character start the film not knowing he’s a replicant and by the the end of the film he still doesn’t know he’s a replicant. It makes more sense to have a human who has spent his career killing replicants, who has become de-humanised by it, to come face to face with replicants who are just has human as he is (perhaps even more so in Rachel’s case) He shows no mercy in what he does, but in his dying moments Roy shows Deckard mercy and then monologues on the very human fears of loss and legacy. All his experiences and memories disappear with him. I like to think this is Deckard’s journey back to humanity. But this is just my personal interpretation, the way I like to see the film.
