Wow... This hit so close to home, WNH. I teared up watching this and listening to this. Sending over lots of hugs your way for you and your family... I lost my grandfather to Alzheimer's two months ago. My family past is a dark period of my life made brighter by my grandparents, who were ALWAYS fighting for my brothers and I despite the shit we were put through at home. My entire family came together to help my grandmother with my grandfather as soon we found out about his condition. I made every effort to be there with him in hospice care or at my grandmother's. Spending time with him, laughing with him, and enjoying the moments I had with him. Having that time was so precious, and I'm so happy I was able to record those moments on my phone. I wasn't ready to receive that phone call two months ago. You never really are ready for those moments in life. I know how horrible this disease is. But I urge you to continue to find that strength that's inside of you. I know it's there. I can see and hear it in you. Always know I'm thinking of you and your family... Sorry for the very long comment. But, as I mentioned above, this is a very personal topic for me. Be well, ride safe, and carry on my friend. Again, sorry for the long comment!

It may have been tough to post this, though, with all the wonderful commenting I've read, many people appreciate it, including me !!! I think of ur mention of Spacep0d & had to think that our ages, KZbin's demographic, & the shared love of Moto's & making mini movies, bounds us all close to one another ;) I may cry when I meet u, and the range from 4min-6min was nice to hear your 'Indian/Spotted' stories...& congrat's on that, too !!! My Aunt suffers from this horrible brain issue, and I know it's my Dad's biggest fear, even though he's never told me. My folks are getting into the 80's and I miss them in OR, glad you were able to make the trip ;) up to WA to see yours

Thank you, DD...your comments are always so helpful and supportive. One thing I would like to do before too much time passes is to ride up the coast to the OR and WA area, just taking my time, for a few weeks, to enjoy that awesome route. I love the Pacific Northwest...it is beautiful. And, of course, spend more time with my parents. Thanks again...I really appreciate you chiming in.

I didn't want to suggest that you make a video about it, but glad you did as you will no doubt get support from all your friends. Some of us have experienced the effects it has as we have had family members with the condition also. Those pictures of your parents look great and I feel for your Mum and Dad and your family. I'm also glad that you turned that camera on and recorded those conversations with your Dad as they will be golden in the future. Take care Wheels and a lucky viewer he was to have met with you in person. RSMF :)

This was an emotional video for me to watch. I know what you are going through. My grandmother (Dad's side) went through this. It was very tough on my Dad....he and his mom were very close. It was a difficult time for the family. You mom and dad are similar to mine. My dad was a vietnam vet and spent a good time of his adult life in the military....and my mom was there supporting him and taking care of us kids. Sounds like you have a close knit family. Take care of the family....all the best

Ahhh Wheels, that is such a sad situation - I watched my Dad go through it with my Grandmother - heartbreaking. My father had Alzheimers. I had a job that i worked from home so was able to take care of him. He passed away June of 2009 just a week before his 85th birthday. The last stages of Alzheimers kicked in and his body just started shutting down. He was able to walk into the hospital but he past 3 weeks later. Taking care of them drains you mentally. There are support groups out there now but none when i was dealing with it. Find some way to get your father a break even if its just for one day a week have someone watch her so he can just get away and relax for a moment. Its hard to watch someone so strong just wilt away right in front of you. All the best to you and your family.

Thanks for the supportive words. I do appreciate it. My Dad finally did get to a point where he just needed to get a break now & then so he did find a really nice place where he can drop her off for a day now & then. I know he is completely drained, extremely fatigued & much more stooped over lately and this is a big concern. He also did find a good support group which does help him a lot. It is just so surreal & painful to watch this slow decline & to realize they are already gone in their mind. Thanks again for sharing & the comments.

Hey wheels. I'm an RN and deal with patients and families every day. It is not easy. It scares me to think that someday my father or my wife's parents may someday be in the same boat. It also scares me that it could happen to either me or my wife and that we would be a burden on each other or our children. All we can do is love the people we have always loved and be patient with them. It is a family love and we should all help to make each persons burden easier to handle by being there for those that care for those with Alzheimers. I pray for you and your family. Stay strong and lean on each others shoulders for strength.

I feel ya sista, my grandmother had alzheimers and her demise sounds exactly what you are going through, but my father is in the early stages of it now also..... he doesn't quite repeat himself yet, he knows that he forgets stuff so he is just withdrawing into himself, becoming very quiet, not talkative at all and just blends into the shadows....... and know what he was like in his younger days, that is so totally foreign for him :-( Good luck with it all......... oh, one thing we did do for our grandmother was make a photo collage with the names of everyone in it.

wow sorry to hear this My father-in-law has the same problems & refuses to go to the doctor because they always give him bad news. With all his medical problems we don't think he'll last much longer. We've tried everything to get him care but most of the time he'll walk out of the doctors appts. mad at the world like a 3 yr old

Wow, that's sad to hear. On the one hand, I can understand his frustration; on the other hand, getting the right care is crucial. Thanks for the support.

Ms. Wheels, so sorry you must experience this. We live in an amazing time when parents often live to see their children retire, as in my family. Those of us who watch our parents begin to fail, be it from Alzheimers or other geriatric ailments that slowly rob them of the routine things of life is a painful experience. A doc recently described a common experience of the elderly in an meaningful way, "they lose their ability to make short-term memories. They recall and speak of things from World War II, but can't remember what they had for breakfast. Truly, the children start to become the parents as the parents become almost child like. At any rate, please know this stranger will offer a prayer or two for you as we share a common experience of mature life. And while the motorcycle gives you moments to escape the painful realities and responsibilities don't lose concentration of operating the bike

Thank you for the really great comments. So, so true that it seems like we, the kids, are almost like parents to them. They are both so frail & more tired and stooped over. She is like a child and mentions her Mom frequently. I will make sure not to lose my concentration while riding...good point!

Alzheimer's is a terrible disease, in my opinion it's worse than cancer. I have seen the affects of Alzheimers and its not nice and very emotional for all involved. So you got recognised that is so cool and you sat on a Springfield, I love to have an Indian Springfield. Take care.. RSM8

Yeah, I think you could be right...it's a terrible disease and difficult to deal with for everyone. And that Springfield was pretty awesome.

So sorry to hear about your Mom Wheels, understand what your going through as my Nana God bless her suffered from this horrid disease before she passed away many years ago. Latch onto those moments when her spirit appears through the disease and hold onto them even though they may just be fleeting moments. We don't know each other and have only ever communicated through the medium if your Vlog but I hope you'll accept a virtual hug, chin up Wheels. on a side note, there is a guy in the UK whose father suffers from Alzheimer's and found that song brought his dad back do he's used this to try to raise money for the Alzheimer's society. his target was £1000 he's just hit £100,000 !!!! He's on Facebook and You Tube as the Songaminuteman.. FB link is m.facebook.com/songaminute/ Best wishes

Wheels...my understanding is hospice is covered by medicare (both in patient and home care). She won't get 24 hour care until end stage but that is true with any ailment..not just Alheimers. Look into that to check me but I think I'm right. I feel so bad, its a rough one for sure but keep the faith. God bless you and your family, rsmf. Freedom Rider out.

My Dad insists on taking full-time care of her...maybe it's his way of giving back to all she did for him? I don't know, but believe me, he has done a ton of research and has made pages & pages of notes. Thank you for the comments...really appreciate it.
