This may be already posted, but those were set up in most studios horizontally, It makes better sense with the driver locations. The drivers were mirrored so one could flip them to get the tweeter up or down, depending on preferences. Plus they were used primarily as near-field, so the axis was pretty much from a central location in the studio.

So just keep the old crossover if you sell them to someone that wants them put back to stock OR sell them both the factory crossover plus Danny's. Its like an engine swap in an old muscle car.

No. JBL owners won't care. Most of them also have modern designs as well. I installed carpet in a home of a then retired country music star/studio engineer. I asked him what was the best way to hear what he intended to be heard on his records. He said to get JBL studio monitors, lay them on their sides with tweeters at ear level, toed-in at the listening position as close as you could comfortably get without disrupting the center image. They still work pleasingly well on the music of their era, especially if the studio was using them as well. Today's neutral speakers tend to expose the music (especially classic pop/rock/country) as being mixed and proven mostly by ear, and not very pleasingly at all. Fixing these speakers is missing their point. JBL has updated version of one of their classics that performs audibly and measurably well. It's not as if they can't do that, especially using all proprietary drivers. There are already too many "fixed" speakers in the world. Meanwhile, people are chasing acoustic gremlins around their rooms, and looking to find that "warmth" via tube gear and other quirky distortion adding methods, just about everywhere you look.

Today is the platinum age of audio. I have not just the memories of a lot of gear I've auditioned and owned, but quite a few pieces have hung around with me for a long time, and I've often listened to various pieces of gear that're decades old. Plenty exposure to a range of "vintage". The access, form factor, features, performance, value of today's gear is spoiling. And especially so with loudspeakers (despite still many not-so-well-designed examples). Danny's wrap up to this video nails it.

I much preferred the "New England Sound" like AR, Alison and KLH. And I really liked British speakers especially the BBC derived designs... Spendor, Rogers, Radford, KEF, Chartwell. They sounded much more refined and lifelike to my ears than JBLs. Their only compromise was playback levels didn't approach the JBLs. I did however love the larger floor standing JBLs like the L300. They were a very different animal than the 4311/L100.

Before I even watch this review, Classic JBL = Hornloaded Speaker with a 14" driver, that's the sound JBL is famous for. They made their name with PA systems for movie theatres and live music and continue to uphold their reputation in those areas today. It makes sense people would use them as studio mains to get a reference for a large venues on their mixes, logically JBL started making products for this market as well and the home audio trend started by using studio monitors at home. Given JBL has always had a pretty distinguishable "Brand sound" across their lineup it makes sense that these are designed to replicate the sound of their theatre line speaker in a more compact/affordable format. The way you'd design a speaker to throw sound out in an untreated auditorium (ever been to an old movie theatre or concert hall?) is not going to be the same as trying to get flat results in an anechoic chamber and it makes no sense to critique them based on those measurements.The quality of their drivers given their price point is another factor. As with many speaker manufacturers from that that era things like electronics and cabinet construction were often not prioritized by the designers, as speakers have evolved these have become more integral to the design process. I feel the need to say all this because with all due respect to your engineering prowess and knowledge of speakers I feel like you're selling GT Race cars by comparing them to old muscles cars on the Nurburgring. Just my perspective.
@dannyrichie97432 ай бұрын
Your comparison of us selling GT race cars and the vintage speakers are like an old muscle car is a good one. The disparity might even be worse than that. At the very least you would need to consult the designer about what they were going for before just throwing it all out. The cheerleading crowd here can't find it least bit suspicious that apparently reputable companies, who have been in the business for decades and have produced much of the research in the field, are unable to produce a decent speaker. But of course there is a simple fix offered, for a fee naturally. You are free to rave about the magnificent results all you want but be ready to get criticised for it by others with healthy scepticism.

The misunderstanding of the history and use of this iconic speaker is embarrassing. Ignorance is bliss.

The actual embarrassment is that these were ever used at all. They were really bad.
@edgewound2 ай бұрын
@dannyrichie9743 they were extremely successful in recording studios to displace the large footprint of the Altec 604...while replicating the sonic signature in a much smaller package. Bart Locanthi was the chief engineer. Have some respect for those that came before you...or you wouldn't be doing this.

Often used as a mid-field, near-field monitor, the elements are as close together as possible for drive unit to unit integration. Also, can't speak foe everyone however we used these horizontally oriented, for better mid/high coverage laterally.

Do you ever say anything good about any speakers? $300-500 to make $1000 speakers better! If every speaker was made to the highest spec, most people couldn't afford them. Not sure if it's just arrogance or snobbery.

Watch my videos on some of the Polk, Monolith, Golden Ear, Mofi, ATC, and even a Emotiva and you'll hear me praise them for being well designed. I am not arrogant or a snob, just honest.

Instead of screwing around with other companies products, which involved hard work, costs of r And d, advertisements, labor costs etc, why don't you build your own if you think you are so much better? I would not like it one bit if someone piss fart around with my stuff. It will be a call from the lawyers.

Well, are you dumb? First time watching Danny upgrade videos? Danny runs a company that sells DIY speakers. Also finished speakers. Visit his homepage before making a dumb comment.

He does build his own. As far as what Danny does to other speakers, it is at the request of his customers. As a viewer, I come here to enjoy his process, documentation and results, not random “hate” posts by viewers that simply document that they are in the wrong forum.

@Rowuk2024 You are either missing the point or an idiot. This bloke insinuates by screwing around with others hard work that their products are not that well made and that is why he is fixing them. End of story

@@artyfhartie2269 Either are you having a bad day or are you just dumb? No end here, on your arrogant answer. This “bloke” would run circles around any engineer that designed the speakers that the marketing apartments will put in a “price point “ status, that they fool you, to buy with nice price and heavy marketing. Fail speakers ain’t pure hard work. It’s incompetence. Why don’t you complain to those that bought these failed speakers and did send them to Danny. Ooh yea, you can’t find them so you complain at the messenger? There are other forums out there that is nourishing on Danny and his doings and sales, why don’t you go to them?

An old audio magazine reviewer once said that it was never a matter of design talent but rather taste with the vintage JBL systems. They themselves knew they weren't designing the most neutral or accurate speakers, just like the people that seek them out today know. I think they prided themselves in building very efficient and dynamic transducers and then used relatively simple crossovers that voiced the speakers to be forward and lively, not neutral. Making them neutral and transparent might actually degrade their appeal to many people. If you look at the current prices of many audiophile type speakers that were way more theoretically correct designs from the 70',80's and 90's you'll find that the classic JBL models from the 60's and 70's usually sell for way more money. Appreciate them for what they are just like people did when they were new.

Those tweeters are low level flat out garbage. I heard these speakers in the eighties and did not like them. Danny also did a video on the pioneer HPM 100s most people dont know but those speakers were designed for pioneer by JBL and sound horrible.
