I don't mean to sound rude, but why do you need to mess up with a classic? That for sure will change the acoustics. If I wanted a different type of structure, I would just get a different model and brand of speakers. I would never let anybody touch my Cornwalls

I replaced the electrolytic caps that feed the tweeters on my vintage B&W bookshelf speakers. I used those same yellow poly caps that you displayed in your video in place of the electrolytic caps. 'BIG' difference as the tweeters sound more detailed with better instrument separation and more open sound stage. The speakers sound more engaging and listener fatigue factor is greatly reduced. Even the bass response improved [go figure]. Not bad for a four dollar investment.

I was lucky enough to listen to these prototype. We started of with the big NX extreme on some James brown and John William symphonic music. It was amazing in terms of clarity , sound stage and depth. I have never heard things as deep as this. I haven't heard that much, but I did hear some high end Focal and B&W. We then spent most of our time listening to these prototype. I listened to Yo Yo Ma Bach Cello Suite no. 1 . The sound and holographic effect is unbelievable, it sounded like Yo Yo Ma was in front of you, and then we started with some bluegrass music from Alison Krauss. Wow that was out of this world. I wasn't exaggerating. I can still vividly remember Alison being there in the middle closer to you than the guitar slightly to the right, while Dobro was slight back to the left, and the bass was a bit further back to the left, and then the fiddle was in the back to the left closer to the Dobro. We then listened to a double bass solo playing blues. The sound again was very lively as if the performer was there, and also the sound stage is bigger than the cello earlier, and it sounded like a big double bass rather than a smaller Cello. Finally a Jazz piece with some live audiences in a restaurant environment. You can "hear" the location of the audience from their utensils sound, while the band was playing slightly back. Wow that was impressive. I will bring some big Symphonic piece and maybe some electronic ambient music to experience the 3D sound effect again when I visit Dan next time. He was very patient with my request and I really appreciate it.

This guy annoys me. I've watched several reviewers who take their own measurements of this speaker who can show very clearly that this speaker has a wide horizontal dispersion pattern. Yet here he is claiming that they beam due to their baffle size. This guy wants you to think all speakers are shit from the factory to aid his own modification business.
@DBTAudioКүн бұрын
Notice Danny does not give us any listening impressions before and after his upgrades. Why? Any hifi enthusiasts has already learned that the perfect measurements don’t always result in the best sound. That said, we need to hear a before and after review to determine if his upgrades made a difference. I appreciate Danny calling out expensive manufacturers using cheap parts for high dollar speakers, but without listening to them, it’s all talk about bad measurements and we’re supposed to assume they must sound bad? He is trying to sell his upgrade services. He lets the speaker manufacturers build a speaker, he picks it apart with technical talk without a listening session, revises the speaker, then send it back to you and it’s supposed to be a better sounding speaker now. Kind of like an editor of a book, the author creates the content and awesome storyline and the editor cleans up the grammatical errors, then trash talks the author because he cleaned up the grammar. The author was the visionary and provided the content, that’s why the best seller award goes to the author, not the editor. Danny does not compare his speakers sound quality to the other manufacturers. Why not? He can make good money tweaking your speakers and let the manufacturers do all the R&D work and he does the quick editing without listening and make money. Be careful listening to Danny before you decide to disregard a speaker manufacturer you may have had interest in. Listen for yourself. If the owner of the Duettes say they were too bright and in his face, I respect that. We have to keep in mind there are many variables in the Hifi chain; cables, amps, your room acoustics, etc. We work hard to get the system tuned to our liking. Danny’s tweaks may not solve this guy’s problem and we’ll never get his feedback to confirm.

Khorns came into my possession some years ago, my initial thought was to flip them, too many of the same issues Danny speaks of here. But I also heard potential with them, micro dynamics like I'd never heard with all the box and open baffle speakers I'd run previously, uncanny sense of performers in room. So I got to work with diy mods instituted over a number of years. All new drivers, Type A crossovers point to point Duelund tin plated copper wire, Jupiter and Audyn True Copper Max caps, Jantzen air core inductors, Volti tractrix mid horns, tweeter mounted on custom baffle. Only thing stock on these speakers is bass driver enclosure. Result is a Khorn with natural timbre, phase coherent such that sound staging and imaging first rate, greater resolution/transparency, but still keeps or improves upon inherent Khorn attributes such as large scale dynamics, impact, image size. These now my dream loudspeakers, full size performers presented with reach out and touch believability. Klipsch Heritage speakers have real potential when modified correctly, the newer iterations have gotten better with improved crossovers, tractrix horns.

Here's another point of view, regardless of what Andrew said. While I do appreciate what you do and I honestly think that your knowledge and expertise of speaker design is outstanding, I also think re-designing speakers based on obtective mesurement on your part is not the right way to do things. Speakers are part of a system, and no matter how much you try to make them sound flat, the end result may or may not be worse than what you started with. In their respective system, that is. The owners room, amp, cables, other equipment will contribute to the whole, thus redesigning a pair of speakers will not bring Nirvana. In some cases, it will be a disappointment. Heck, it's not even sure that the listener will want a flat response sound anyways. Also: in my humble experience, "pimped" speakers lose value on the 2nd hand market. So.... here's a business idea for ya - extend your service by offering consultancy (talk to the customer what kind of sound they like, go in and listen to their system and give advice and then, ONLY THEN start speaker design to round off their experience.

Weirdly enough I hear apparent differences between stock and audiophile power cables to my gear. I'm an engineer, I've built a few power supplies, I did not expect this and I don't have the theoretical framework for explaining this. RF suppression? EMR suppression? If there is an apparent difference it should of course be possible to measure with proper gear.

While I am not a fan of Andrews channel and is assessments on audio equipment I find his knowledge and experience very limited and is really only addressing low fi equipment anyhow. But it is likely his followers dont know that and take his input as good advice. Seriously It is not. I do want to stress I am a big believer in parts quality anyone who thinks different again does not have the knowledge and experience to know. ( which was stated by Andrew and only solidifies his ignorance on hi fi ) Now with that said, and I like Danny his personality and passion for what he is trying to do here. I do however strongly question his methods and recommendations. "Most" Speaker manufactures spend much time and energy voicing their speakers and finding the sound they are after and prefer, and likely with a wide range of equipment, hopefully cables and source material. Not to say they get it right all the time, and many budget speaker manufactures absolutely are cutting back on higher quality parts to meet a certain price point. No doubt. Now Danny's recommendations seem logical but after further review I question his methods to measure speakers and this like many opinions from audio channels are giving you their opinions based on either just test measurements, which is good place to start but should not be used as the final judgement of any piece of audio equipment. Measurements are only a tool and absolutely should not be used as the final judgement on sound quality ! The equipment being used may not be bringing out the best in that pair of loudspeakers that are being reviewed and evaluated. As anyone who is into hi fi knows there is a system synergy that happens with every audio system. Speakers and equipment can only be judged when a number of possible combination of amplifiers, preamplifiers, cables, and the appropriate acoustic music material has been used to get a really good sense of a piece of equipment's overall sonic strengths and weaknesses. Reviewing equipment is not as simple as taking measurements or hooking it up to the equipment at hand and passing judgement. It is a long and tedious process and must be done carefully to give a fair and impartial review. So the lesson here is be cautious, do your own homework, learn what you can from those you are taking advice from as their knowledge and expertise is essential to going down the right path.

The BBC spent the equivalent of millions and literally years developing the LS35a including ‘listening’ to capacitors and insisting on incredibly close tolerances of parts(not just drivers). Which is why they have achieved legendary status and are still around 50 years after introduction. Andrews comments in talking about using bubble gum wrappers whilst not literal is frankly ill-informed and stupid. Many/most loudspeakers are designed and produced with ‘marketing’ in mind - particularly in terms of hitting a price point and maximising the margin for the retailer - not on using the best possible parts and design regardless of cost.
