You're 100% correct. Travis Willingham likes to "stay in character", so he uses Grog's voice even when he's technically talking as himself. So he always said "I would like to rage" in Grog's voice, and it eventually became Grog's own catchphrase. Now, in campaigns 2 and 3, there are other barbarians, played by others. They took on the tradition of using the same catchphrase, of course. And *_every single time_* they do that, Travis is giddy, giggling like a kid, goin "yeah you do" and the like... 😁

Many of the items in Gilmore's Glorious Goods are easter eggs, either to Critical Role or to D&D in general. It's better to leave most of them as spoilers for now, though it's fine to discuss the sandal, as it's more generally D&D related. Gary Gygax was the creator of Dungeons and Dragons. Before he created the game, he worked as a cobbler, but the game eventually generated enough money on it's own for him to quit cobbling. The last pair of footwear he ever worked on was a pair of sandals, and the "Sandal of Gygax" has become a sentimental reference / inside joke / mysterious magical item within the game.

Now you've been introduced to Vox Machina, and seen them go from a bunch of clusterfucks to actually starting to work together. Now we can get to the real meat of the campaign. Starting with this arc in the rest of Season 1. The first two episodes were what they were originally going to make for the Kickstarter, where they took a moment from the pre-stream game. The rest of season 1 was from the stream. Oh, and don't worry, Vex managed to grab a bunch of gold, plus Grog had stuffed a bunch into his bag of holding before they got interrupted. And now Lady Delilah Briarwood, voiced by the VA for Azula, and Sylas, voiced by the DM Matt Mercer.

More responses and insights, mostly since I just enjoy talking: - There was a time I might've agreed with you on the appeal of living out in the wilderness, but having now had to move to a rural mountain town smaller than my high school graduating class, I've realized that being so far away from civilization drives me completely insane. If I ended up isekai'd into a fantasy world, I'd _have_ to live in a city -- and given my general nature, I'd probably wind up in the magical mercantile field, likely not too far removed from Shaun Gilmore. (More on him in a bit.) - While it's not unheard of for DMs to create character sheets for NPCs (my boyfriend's DM had a stack of 'guest fighters' in a short tournament arc earlier in the current campaign that could all be used as player characters, for example), it's a lot more common for NPCs to just have an associated stat block with the bare essentials included. (That being said, there's some NPCs that _don't_ have a stat block, like the Lady of Pain from the City of Doors, Sigil -- meaning, among other things, that picking a fight with her will *_not_* go well for you.) - Yeah, sassing the DM is generally a good way to get into deeper shit. Not _always,_ some DMs are good sports about their players being IRL Chaotic Neutrals, but better safe than TPK'd. - Shaun's shop's stock is basically just a concentrated hit of fan service for the _Critical Role_ fans, or 'Critters'. There's references to the crew's other campaigns, as well as a couple in-jokes for D&D nerds (the Sandals of Gygax being the most immediately recognizable). - Considering plate armor imposes a disadvantage to Stealth checks, the fact that Krieg managed to sneak up on Fince while the party was looking towards him really _is_ impressive. - That emblem on the floor of the five dragons in the classic _Magic: The Gathering_ color set? Keep that in mind. It'll be taking a back seat for a while, but it _will_ be important. - While it's not a very long acquaintance, *Brimscythe the Iron Storm* makes a helluva first impression, aided in no small way by David Tennant's growly brogue. Again, though, keep this fight in mind -- it'll provide a good point of reference for when that emblem becomes relevant later. - I could be mistaken, but I think the play of one character throwing another character at a target is broadly referred to as the Softball Special. - 'I Would Like To Rage' is one of a great many meme lines that _Critical Role_ has contributed to the cultural lexicon. Not hard to see _why._ - You recall how I said that Matt Mercer reprised a few of his named roles from the campaign? This is one of the big ones: *Lord Sylas Briarwood,* the BBEG of Season 1. *Lady Delilah Briarwood,* voiced by Grey DeLisle Griffin (of, among other things, _Avatar: The Last Airbender_ fame), effectively shares the BBEG role with her husband, but if the DM's voicing the character, they get top billing. Stay tuned, my guy -- the adventure is only just beginning!

Let's see... any non-spoiler fun facts others haven't already said...? Here are two: Matt Mercer (DM, primarily voices Sylas Briarwood) and Marisha Ray (Keyleth) are an irl couple, as you may have been told. A bit of a fun fact is that there are a few times where they voice paired incidental NPCs... such as the pair of soldiers who are dropped to their deaths. There's another Matt-and-Marisha NPC pair next episode. There are some dice 'hidden' in design elements sometimes. What I can immediately think of are the double doors of Uriel's castle (a geometric design which is a set of dice!) and the moment in this episode where Vax is dodging falling rocks. For example the blonde woman who was captain of the guards that got attacked at the start of the episode was Felicia Day, and if you look into the origins of Critical Role she’s the one who gave them their start. Also, RANDOM but one of the guards at the palace in episode one where the had to leave Trinket outside was the rapper Logic LMAO! The voice cameos get more and more wild as the seasons go on as well. The fight scene with the Blue Dragon in the cavern is one of my favorite scenes from this episode. It really showcases how the team’s class synergy can work together and I love the way they visualized it! I really enjoy seeing you pick out the different reference and on screen translations of certain spells and abilities etc. That’s one of my favorite things to do while watching the show myself. Buckle up; next episode is when the campaign really begins. Quite literally, since the first two episodes are events that happened in their home game before they started doing it live.

The pin-up is probably a dragonborn, I forget who did that piece of cheesecake but it wasn't actually the animation crew IIRC but a friend of crit-role who's a comic artist or something like that, to be put in there.

Now the real story begins, where my favorite boy takes a more central rol in this arc, but the way the show divides the attention between the whole team is excelent, no character is left behind

i may be a bit of an oddity, but, i actually like the idea of competent NPC's, like, capable town guard, armies, and such, with the idea that kings, lords, and the like hire Adventurers since they can be more outside the box, or operate in ways the more conventional forces can't

I really enjoy this Reaction! When I First watched the show I began suspecting Krieg when he said Something ominous about a storm at the beginning and then was gone, then the dragon appeard and then he survived. And I also thought that the other one was too obvious and thus a red herring, because of similar reasons. Tusk Love is a campaign 2 reference(and there is also gonna be an Adaptation of that so you can look gorward to it) So like I Said This Reaction was a lot of fun! I personally enjoy it when Reactors pause, because it allows them to voice their thoughts(and thats why you watch a Reaction, to hear another persons thoughts and feeling of Something you like) and because its paused you don't talk over the Episode(that is Something that I don't like

More important NPC’s will get fleshed out stat blocks and levels in classes. The majority of your NPC’s though do not have class levels. In the beginning scene Krieg is probably the only person there with any class levels. The rest would use generic stats for soldiers or officers.

I am part of a party that is level 10? 11? and we just met an Adult sea dragon. She was able to ignore every spell we cast and seeing how she left us alive (small blessing there), I can tell you a level 5 or 6 ranger may or may not be able to get an attack to land hard enough to do any damage. *hides under a rock hoping the dragon did not see the party*

If I was in a DnD world, I'd want to own a tavern, but just run the kitchen. And maybe take a few select wealthy clients up to my rooms upstairs. And I'd want some low level magic for cooking and handling bar fights.

NPC's are usually (almost always with VERY few exceptions) controled by the DM (dungeon master or GM game master, the same). And they tend to have a level, citicen are basically commoners, comonly no level in anything (sometimes in that itself and it just give working skills but nothing more). Then guards have guard level unless the GM wants to make them more important/relevant, then they can give the guard some levels of any clas (most common fighter as it is the most fitting and simple to give more power to it without making a mess of lots of things to keep track). But you can have also NPCs taht directly classes. I rember a paladin that BEAT my ass (not that I blame that NPC I was alctually being possesed and she knock me the fuck out to stop worst thing from happening (ignore the poor old man I chopped in half like he was tissue paper)).

Not sure about the current D&D rules, but back in the day of Advanced D&D npc soldiers and guardsmen characters tended to be level zero fighters. Basically anything could one-shot them.

I'm autistic, so if I lived in the country I'd be fine (quiet, less auditory stimulation, which is my biggest thing, I hate constant loud noise I can't control). I'd just be that odd little person who lives either on the outskirts of the village or in the little hut in the woods. I might be the witch of the woods from whom the brave can request or trade for potions and spells. :D
