Skin color and sexuality are two of the least interesting characteristics of any individual. Walsh does a good job outing people for whom melanin levels are everything, and who are happy to sew division and angst for profit.
@holysecret2Ай бұрын
Least interesting, yet most obvious at the same time. A slight contradiction arises from that, as we are immediately put off / our immersion is broken when we see a black character in a medieval European setting. All of a sudden the superficialities do matter, simply because they stand out and we cannot easily ignore them. Personally I find it challenging to square that with my conviction that we should not be judging or disadvantaging people based on sex or skin color. On a real-life level as well, it disadvantages black actors from potentially lucrative roles due to the fact that certain stories do not allow them to be portrayed in that universe. I have sympathy for people being frustrated with that dilemma. But at the same time, what percentage of stories really is impacted by that? Probably less than 5%. And the same logic counts in the other direction as well, of course. Say we have a purely black or African story, it doesn't make sense for a light-skinned person to play a central role in that, unless that is the point of the narrative of course, or it doesn't take place in real history.
@sisuriffsАй бұрын
@@holysecret2 I take your point, but at the same time your ideas make my point as well. There is nothing especially profound, for example, about casting a Black Hitler or White Malcolm X or 12 year old heavy bald girl of any skin color as Abraham Lincoln-to use another acting example. I know you’re not saying that either, but the example would be uninteresting and silly imho, or worse, virtue signalling and tokenism. Do I think skin color must be historically accurate in all cases? Of course not. I am talking about judging each person as much as possible, and being expected to be judged oneself, on personal character (more along MLK lines than today’s hyper colorized/sexualized group identity narratives). Liberace and Little Richard would probably have been nothing noteworthy had they never touched a piano.

Fair review...good to hear your thoughts. The problem with today's vision of "Diversity" is that people think diversity is based on immutable characteristics. The VALUE of diversity is in the diversity of thought where different ideas are compared, combined and the best grows. This is the reason today's media is failing. When major outlets and Hollywood employ 95% lefthist they see everything from one side.
@KristopherPrimeАй бұрын
exactly. we can have physical/racial diversity, but the thing is it should never be prioritized. there are times for certain racial castings like established iconic characters or when a story has a certain cultural setting (black panther in africa), but otherwise it should be "colorblind" and up to the creators' decision or who works best for a role. and what was necessary has already been done. blacks have the same employment opportunities as whites. they just need to reach up and take them.

It was never about race not really. It's always been about profits and power. When something 'blows up' or becomes 'big' in society, someone or more likely some group, are gaining money and power from it. It's never about what is being presented, that's the fluffy stuff meant to drag the unsuspecting public in. Sometimes these things are even started by a small group who genuinely wanted positive change, but if some person or group with money and influence could see dollar signs to be made off it, they will use it for their own end goals. No doubt a few people do get helped and they will use these people to virtue signal or to be the 'face' of the movements. Meanwhile they are trampling over everybody else uncaring of the fall out. Just follow the money or the power and there is your answer.

I think in the modern era any story that starts off with the protagonist being a Black doctor, lawyer, President, astronaut, etc. is perfectly believable because those people already exist in real life all around. So that opens up the entire story telling universe for compelling tales off all types without rehashing of old ones.
@erickentroller4132Ай бұрын
You hit the nail on the head about black representation in movies and media. I remember seeing the show Shaka Zulu a while back and thinking to myself "Why are they not making more stuff like this?" Didn't have to tell a tired story about slavery and oppression or push black people into white history (as if it's the only history worth telling) It was a story about an extraordinary King in Africa that made the world take notice. I think that's the kind of positive story telling that would actually benefit black culture, and even humanity.

Interesting and quite balanced commentary. A huge part of the social issues that keep repeating themselves are because of our poorly run public schools especially in more crowded and impoverished areas. The powerful Teachers' Union keeps the house of cards from being dismantled.

I keep wondering why the people who have so much money to pay for DEI training aren't donating their money to charities and causes in minority areas or targeting minorities to make their lives better 🤔

Agree! I was annoyed at "Bridgerton," for example. I feel like they erased the actual black experience from that era.

Bridgerton is not meant to be real or reflect actual history as it is set in a parallel post racial world.

Appreciate your content and review. Also, agree very strongly w your take on current racism in the US. Treat everybody as an individual, objectively hold them accountable to their actions, and give neutral parties the benefit of the doubt when able... life will become more positive and optimistic

Gooodness ur take is so refreshing! And YES I’d like to see some original content. What about the black slave that was sold in Japan and eventually won his freedom and became a samurai? He’s a real person with an amazing story! Why can’t we have THAT? Also- 100% yes to having non Hollywood creators cuz I am so DONE with that cesspool

I agree with your comment on repurposing history and authenticity. It frustrates me various ethic groups get added to remade stories, id much prefer accuracy and authenticity in stories representing all backgrounds. People loved films like 1917, SlumDog Millionaire, Straight Outta Compton and Ali because they attempted an accurate representation of the time and group involved.

Humor, and the humorous use of satire, combined with fresh creativity, and not the typical, current Hollywood recycling of old worn out story lines, is where new cinema need to go to actually entertain without getting "lost in promoting a message". Creative story telling relates to all of us transcending the current obsession on race, and, for example, the early 1960's story of "To Kill a Mocking Bird" could draw us all into the story because of how it so sensitively portrayed the humanity, the nobility, and even the human failings of its various characters, some black and some white, of the story....ah, a concept and understanding of life that is too evidently missing in much modern screenwriting. You did a great review, good luck in achieving your cinematic dreams. Cheers.

the dinner party (haven't seen the film) looks horrific. It must be like a real family that never comes together unless there is a special dinner....where the tension is off the charts! nothing like making me not want to sit down to a dinner table than a depiction of being lectured while eating food when one is hungry.. ...can someone say "bulimia"?

100% brother. There is, and has been, ample artistic space to tell stories of black greatness that will make lots of money and authentic expression. It just needs be done and recognized. Films like Color Purp, 12 years, Glory, Selma, Precious have been a good start.

Thanks for your analysis and perspective. I completely agree with your idea about untapped black stories. I'm a white man whose biggest hero is MLK and my favorite actor is Denzel Washington, simply because they're inspirational to me. And as an English major I definitely agree there are black literary works that should definitely be adapted to the big screen, and I'm just interested in black history and culture in general. I would love to see it done your way, and I think Hollywood is striking out, and just making things worse. Matt's movie was awesome. And good luck in your creative endeavors. And you got a like and a sub!

Not even 5 minutes in man and I'm a hundred percent agreeing with you on what you're saying. People criticise me for getting annoyed at black tokenism, but really what I'd love to see is epic films and stories that have black characters and MCs too. I often argue howd they feel if I cast a white guy as Miles Morales in Spiderman. I'd get slaughtered by the public and rightfully so. Great unique stories for black characters can exist. Black Panther is another damn solid example.

"If there wasn't race, there would be class." -- correct. In fact, the Bulcans are kind of the quintessential example. If you can divide on it, they do. Race, Class, Religion, Denomination (same religion, but different sects), and Family are all things that are feuded over in the Bulcans.

Beautiful Nuanced Take. People who want find ways to "other" people will find ways to single out others no matter what DEI or other "protections" are instituted by the corporate-woke grifters.

Best way I've seen around to describe current Hollywood is a comparison with the 60s Detroit situation with the Automotive Industry: the big three just absorbed all minor companies, killing competition and research, focusing on aesthetics and pointless stuff while not listening to what people actually wanted. So while they stuck producing land yachts with 120hp that moved at snail's pace, with the option of having an oil refinery at home for fueling them, the Japanese swooped in and took market by storm, making those companies rethink their whole strategy. If Hollywood doesn't change soon, if DEI isn't abandoned quickly, we'll all witness several new Detroits all around America.

Matt makes a good point in the film. Growing up in the 90s I never thought about race. I recognized that people had different skin tones than myself but I never thought anything about it, and I knew that racism existed but racists were gross people on the fringe that nobody wanted to associate with. But now I can’t count the number of times in the past decade I have been accused by random people of being a racist for no other apparent reason other than being white. A few years back I was in a relationship with a black girl and I ignored all the red flags because she was pretty but I finally got so tired of how every time a white person looked at her the wrong way having to hear her rant on and on about how they were racist and how the whole world is oppressing her. I feel like everybody these days needs to feel like part of a victimized group. You either gotta be an oppressed minority, or a Christian who is always complaining that “the world” is against us for being Christians, or the patriarchy is holding you down if you’re a woman. Everybody has to be so angry and bitter towards some perceived oppressor these days to fit in.
