ASTM R-Value:
From 2020, there is a new industry standard for measuring the R-value (level of insulation) of sleeping mats - ASTM F3340-18. This new standard is the sleeping mat equivalent to the EN rating for sleeping bags. You can now directly compare the R-value of mats rated using the ASTM F3340-18 with confidence that is a fair and accurate comparison between mats. In simple terms, the higher the R-value, the warmer the mat.
In general terms, an R-value below 2.0 is for summer use, 2.0 to 4.0 is for cooler 3 season use and 4.0+ is for winter temperatures. This will be also be dependent on your sleeping bag, how cold you sleep etc. Please contact our customer service team if you need advice on choosing the right mat for your activity.

I own this pad and use it most weeks, its the most comfortable pad I've ever used, and definitely as warm as it's rated. Im 6ft 2" and around 15 stone and the two edges, whilst not insulated, cause no issues for me. You need to try this pad, inflate to 4/5th's capacity and you'll have a very comfortable and warm nights sleep, this was the pad I have been searching for, and for the price it's a steal.

Hi Dan. The colder outer tubes will not cool the inner warm ones. This is impossible, the warmer inner tubes will warm the outer ones. Heat can only ever move to a cooler place, cold can never move to a warm place. Your body will continue to warm the pad. 2nd law of thermodynamics, basically heat can never move to a warmer place. Hope this helps but you are wrong to worry about it.
@pjhunton

Hey mate good vid, dont worry about the mat, as long as a certain percentage of body heat is reflected it will keep the outer lengths warm via convection. No point insulating the whole thing. Dont let it worry you, test it and see.

I’ve got no problem with the colour. I take your point about the insulation value but I guess the whole thing is a balance between size/weight and comfort/insulation. The only meaningful test is whether or not it works in the cold.

Extremely good points you have raised, any inside insulated ones we have ever used have had the insulation on all the tubes, both top and bottom. Will be interested in your eventual conclusions. there must be a mylar film vulcanized inside for heat reflection; also, check flextail flexgear mosquito repellent/camping lamp kit, its AWESOME edit: I like the color, when I go kayak camping I am on an orange theme setup :) edit: the way the whole insulated mattress was presented to me was like this: dont look at it like the ground cold rising up and making you cold, look at it like the cold cold ground sucking the heat out of your body hence the barrier to reflect your body heat back to you
@oldbaldguy6151

It's not meant to heat the air inside. It reflects your body heat back to you and the base reflects the cold back to ground.

Ey up me duck. The colour I don't think matters so much as it'll be inside a tent, hammock or bivvy bag and as long as those are a more stealthy colour it'll be fine. The insulation, I honestly don't know fella, it needs to be tested in cold conditions. Have a good weekend Dan 👍🙂

Was checking this pad out the other day on the website. Id prefer a darker colour personally, but as others have said if inflating in your tent its not that important. Reminds me of the UL80's profile, where the edges keep you centered, so doubt the lack of insulation will matter much. I do agree that you should hold off 'reviewing' it until youve used it out for a couple of nights. Maybe keep these types of videos as first look ones perhaps.

Well this is an interesting discussion. What we are talking about here is 'heat transfer' - and that's how the cold ground cools your body or else how your body heat transfers to the ground. I think you are half right here with your thinking, and there is a concern. When camping, your sleeping body usually touches the mattress/pad above the insulated part and that stops or slows the body heat from transferring to the cold ground below. So the main insulation here is good, and is what the R rating measures. The higher the R value, the better. But there is a secondary heat transfer from the mattress/pad sides to the cold or ambient air of the tent, and the inflated air connection between the parts of the pad provides the heat transfer 'bridge' between your warm body heat and the colder air in the tent. That said, it's usually the cold ground below your sleeping pad that is the main problem when sleeping in winter conditions, not so much the air temperature inside the tent. Plus some tents are warmer than others, in terms of the inside air temperature on those cold nights. I can't think of a reason why the outer tubes of this Flextail pad are not insulated, other than to save a little weight. But maybe it's still a better pad than many others. Perhaps it's worth doing a direct comparison with other pads, in terms of weight versus R value, and then with a real-world camping test of how each one actually performs on a cold night or on icy ground. My own camping solution in cold weather is usually to take an extra layer of foam or reflective padding to place below the sleeping pad. Plus your sleeping bag choice also makes a huge difference. If, like me, you only camp occasionally, then the best solution is to take extra layers, because then you can deal with being too cold, or else too hot. At Easter time, I was still using my winter gear. In May, I'm never too sure if I need a winter sleeping bag or a summer one. I'll find out next weekend. As usual, thanks for your videos.

Dan, I heàr ya about the cold air travelling thru the chambers from the outside 2. However, wouldn't this also keep the warmer air moving throughout the air mattress as well, keeping the heat distribution moving and circulating.......i dont know really, maybe its a double edged sword! God bless 👍👍

For me the biggest things are the weight, you say it's very light and the pack size. It looks very large compared to the alternatives. I've no idea about how heavy it is. When you lay on it, you were not on the ends, a lack of insulation wouldn't matter to me, I don't move around. The main question I have is, how well it lasts. I wish items were really tested before a review. This is a negative on society, not you in general. I've spent 20+ backpacking trips with my newest tent but couldn't provide a review, just positives and negatives so far. I could with a couple of hammocks but I've spent 300+ nights in each.

You might be onto something about that rating. Remember it’s a lab test with a dummy in real life active sleepers will agitate the air in the pad and it probably will sleep colder than tested. I know this is a problem other tubers have noted with some of the sea to summit and big Agnes pads.
@Im_With_Stupid
@Im_With_Stupid Ай бұрын
The pad has been tested (supposedly) using current ASTM methods that do not include a dummy. The pad is inflated and compressed between two plates, a heated one on the top and an unheated one on the bottom, and how much heat is transferred to the bottom plate is how the R-value is determined. It's not a perfect system and they do state that it doesn't account for movement, pressure variance or heat loss beyond the control of insulation (e.g., side loss), but it is the best one going for reaching an objective and realistic value rather than in-house methods designed to sell pads based on artificially high values. The real problem isn't how it's tested, but the fact that Flextail, while marketing the pad as being ASTM rated, doesn't say if the advertised 5.6 R-value is the ASTM value or their own BS value. This is exactly what Klymit does with their Static V pads. They claim it has a 4.4 R-value and tell you it's ASTM rated, but they do not tell you that the ASTM value is not 4.4, but 1.4 - less than half what they claim based on their in-house methods. I could be wrong, but because Flextail isn't saying something like "R-Value: ASTM 5.6R", I have a feeling that the ASTM rating is much lower than the one they're claiming and probably closer to 3, if even that.
