the sight of those rf cans led me to learn electronics... was so disappointed that none of my instructors mentioned what they were... waited until Internet era to know more about it. and now we have Shango066 😊👍 Thanks sir for your valuable educational sharing! also love the humor snippets :p

I did this in class in 1976 in high school vocational electronics class. the teacher went out and bought a radio for each student, and we all did this.

The old GM radios were supposed to have their antennae trimmers adjusted to a weak station in the middle of the band. I often adjusted mine to the weakest station I wanted to listen to so that it came in as good as possible and the rest were usually still OK. You could get to the trimmer by pulling off the tuning knob and the trim ring behind it and the trimmer was marked and visible on the radio case.

to adjust the range inject a 560Khz 1Khz signal with the dial pointing this freq. then you crank the red coil until you hear or see the maximum deflection. then you inject a 1660Khz and you go with the dial to that freq and with one trimmer of the capaitor you adjust the tone to max deflexion. Then put a low dB signal on 660 Khz and adjust the ferrite coil to maxc gain and then inject 1100 and adjust the other trimmer on the variable capacitor. Range and Gain done!.

Well, 1400 KHz, AKA 1.4 MHz. On the top end, they often chopped 2 places off to make the numbers fit.

SAMON Contact slide could be a problem which is common to am fm tuner cap ground. Try blowing inside a contact cleaner and turn it up and down then let dry.

The dial reading of the signal generator was quite blurred!
