Amelie is one of my favorite movies. i'm sure you've seen it, but it has always reminded me of a Japanese film called "Tampopo," which is basically the same sort of meandering story that actually has the camera leave our main characters for long stretches to visit other characters, all of whom are absolutely OBSESSED with food, and how to make it, and how to eat it, and how weird it is and how it's tied up with living and dying and just being. It'd be an interesting to see your take on it.

Damn. This episode hit close to home for me. For years, I was a lot like Amelie. Always chasing joy, depressed if I stopped for a moment. But since then, I have learned to feel my sadness when I need to. Sorry. I don't want to seem like I'm trying to offer simple solutions to big problems. Just wanted to talk about my experience

Have you seen any analysis of Inside Out? _Lessons from the Screenplay_ covered it most recently and featured the writer (or was it the director) of the film talking about embracing sadness, _Wisecrack_ have also covered this with Is Joy the Real Villain?

Amelie has always been my favorite movie and the way you described it is exactly what i've always felt about it, except you said in such a cohesive, thoughtful, and honest way that i merely aspire to be able to do. It was so well expressed. So thank you for this. It meant so much..truly! And i hope your joy is ever near and dear.

I keep coming back to this video and... I'm not sure I'm really able to articulate why, but I'm gonna try because this video is kind of fantastic. One, I have a patent foramen ovale, and while it's never caused me any problems, Mikey's little aside in the middle really gets to me. Two, I get really invested in the various forms of storytelling that I engage with, and as a result I end up digging deeper a lot, and I feel like sometimes it's hard to explain why I think that's important. But I think why I like this video is because helps me get closer to articulating that by giving me (at least some of) Mikey's perspective on it.

"What does it say about a man who finds enjoyment in seeing bullfighters gored by the bulls they're fighting?" If you know anything about what bullfighting entails, it says quite a lot about that man's level of contempt for those who enjoy torturing animals to death. It's a very humane and empathetic stance to have.

@IntrepidFinch PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has existed as an organization since 1980, this film takes place in 1997. It certainly wouldn't have been a mainstream opinion at the time, but I'm confident you could find people in North America who knew what bullfights entail and were understandably put off by it. Ernest Hemmingway wrote detailed and grisly descriptions of bullfights in Pamplona all the way back in the 1920's in The Sun Also Rises. But since this film does take place in France, yes, this is all a bit of a moot point.

Love your breakdown, well stated. I wonder if you also enjoyed the transformative spirit that Amelie shared with others? You mentioned the blind man, but her subtle video gifts to her neighbor, re-shaped his interaction not only with the grocer he was teaching painting, but Amelie herself in her endeavors. Her father was re-inspired by her whimsical photos of the garden gnome, not to mention her co-worker becoming more confident. Amelie shows us that the simplest of actions can have amazing results. This is one of my favorite films and I thoroughly enjoyed your take and breakdown. Well done!

Rewatching this for the umpteenth time and man does it still get to me. I've been sick with a mystery illness for years, but suddenly got worse in late 2016, which in 2017 led to old symptoms being exacerbated and the appearance of new symptoms, namely severe joint pain and fatigue. In the past year I've been struggling to walk, write, and do any other basic tasks. All without knowing what's wrong, except that it's autoimmune in nature. This video was my first introduction to your work and it hit me exactly when I needed it. I've been watching your videos ever since and they've provided a source of comfort during an unbelievably difficult time. I found myself rewatching this video because I have an upcoming appointment where I'm going to walk away still sick and still without a diagnosis, because I knew it would be comforting and would remind me to keep finding the joy in what's around me. Mikey, I just wanted to tell you how much your videos mean to me and how they keep me going in challenging times. Love what you do and I look forward to what's to come.

Thank you for asking people to look deeper. Everyone puts snarkiness at such high value these days ---especially on the internet, ESPECIALLY with film essays. And then there's you, seeking the heart above the snark and not ever losing humor---and you continue to validate my need to live sincerely. Thank you for sharing your very personal similarities with this film. KEEP DOIN STUFF.

Waking up to a slightly burned coffee and finding there is a new 'Movies With Mikey' video makes it all stop for 20 minutes. To me means happiness in a special tiny way - you are a provider of joy. Really really hope you get better and everything goes exactly the way you want it. But I digress, I wanted to let you know that I love your channel and I've been slowly going through all your older videos while still following all your new stuff. I believe you should do some more facetime stuff in your videos! It feels much more personal and you have such a down to earth personality that I feel everyone would love it too. Maybe not in this series but maybe some random chats with us or something. Idk just wanted to say that. Regardless keep up the great work and I really wish you had more subs and a stronger KZbin presence. You're amazing. Seriously. I hope you see this message. Keep it real homie.

I truly think this is one of the best films of the past century. Not only for the AMAZING cinematography, acting, lighting, concept, etc., but also because its story and its title character resonate so perfectly with so many people. Everyone has trauma. Everyone can see the benefit of staying busy to stay positive or staying busy with positivity to stay joyful. It is such a beautiful story exactly BECAUSE of how twisted the world is around Amélie. Just like our own. And in realizing just how close to home this movie hits to so many people, we realize just how alike all of us are. This movie is not just a sweet film with a positive message, but it is also an opportunity to recognize that there is a common thread between all of us. We can relate to each other. We don't have to feel alone.

I'm french and my name is Amelie. I saw the film Amelie when i was 14, and the way i connected with it reinforced my desire to work in film to preserve and express that other side of the world, precious, fragile, meaningful. I now live in Paris, work in film, and the more i've grown older the more i realize how much i seem to be like the character, without even wanting to (down to the brown expressive eyes, short bangs, brittle awkwardness). There was a huge backlash against the film in France, saying it was a postcard paris, that its vision of Paris was old fashioned, white as fuck, idolizing the past. But I've always felt it had expressed something very important to me in a way that i don't often see. Thanks for expressing that.

I love ya Mikey. I've loved you since Borderlands, and have come to appreciate you even more since CinemaWins directed me to your channel very recently. This all hit really close to home because my family seems to have a genetic defect that ends up affecting all of us eventually. About 3/4 of my family end up with some form of cardiovascular disease, primarily coronary artery disease, and eventual congestive heart failure. But in my experience with my family, sometimes the people with the most broken hearts are the most capable of the deepest love. My grandmother fought congestive heart failure for *ten years*, and was never not one of the sweetest most beautiful people I've ever known. I can't say I know you in the same way, but I truly believe you are both cut from the same cloth. Maybe when you fill a physically broken heart with the hope, joy, and love the likes of which people rarely see, you can keep it going just as well if not better than a normal one.

I have been seeing your show for days now, out of the pandemic bore, and after seeing this episode I have to say this: i often find exhausting the way you speak without taking a breath, I don't necessarily always agree with you, mostly on star wars 789, and yet I find your work entertaining and interesting enough to keep me watching and listen to you. All this said I, today, now, MUST say that I really got moved by this episode, I got moved first when I saw the tear on the cheek of the man finding his treasure from the movie, but then I really got moved once again when you cut and spoke about your personal life, by what you said, and the way you did it. So, besides considerations on the timing of the cut maybe made in a calculated fashion, I just need to put these words out of my brain here for whoever stumbles and reads (maybe you included) and say that I really respect your work, your opinions and mostly your sensibility (and maybe your humor too). so, thanks pal. I felt you

Amelie is easily my favourite film of all time as it resonates with me in mnany ways (wanting to make others happy, feeling isolated, discovering your purpose and assisting others in finding theirs, appreciating life in every way possible etc) and it makes me so genuinely happy that it too struck you and made you feel a lot and think a lot about life and how we go about it and its beauties and struggles. It's also amazing how deeply it hit you and how the parallels between her life and yours are very much there- thank you for making this beautiful video

I posted this in the Discord, but I think it bears repeating here too. Wow, Mikey. I've enjoyed MwM episodes in the past. They've made me think and feel things too. But not quite...on the level that Amelie has. I've never laughed and cried at the same time before now. I am suddenly very hyper-aware of my depressions and my anxieties but feel strangely...floaty about their presence at the moment. For the first time I feel as if there is something that can be done. I just need to figure out what it is. Also, I would like to apologize to Anthony for not being a professional surfer. ALSO ALSO, LA CONFIDENTIAL!!! MY PRAYERS HAVE BEEN ANSWERED!!

i just watched the film immediately followed by your take. thank you. genuinely. i've been worried about my work--not only worried in that there are things about it that i'd like to change, but worried that those changes will overall bring down the quality of my work and make other people dislike it more--it feels as though i've failed at my work if someone doesn't laugh at every joke. i've thought of ways to make it mean something beyond the popcorn humor of it all, but i've been worried that people will just be above it and feel secondhand embarassment. i think i need to just jump in and do it. i've been so nervous what other people think about it that i haven't thought about how much more joy it would provide me to make it. i think i just have to be myself out there more, whatever that means so yeah. it's 1 AM, and i feel like this was maybe repetitive and rambly, so i'm going to cut it off there. thanks again for your work, Mikey. i hope you actually make it to this.

I will play devil's advocate and just say that Amelie normalized female stalking behavior, and invading people's privacy beyond good intentions. Her life is this dull, boring, and routine pattern. By invading people's lives with the misleading thought "she is helping them", she trys to manipulate people into behaving a certain way, to fulfill her own amusement and the void of her boring mundane life. She also stalks the shit out of the young man, trailing him on his daily route, and leaving him creepy messages for him to find (despite being complete strangers with NO personal association between them). In the realm of fantasy, her behavior is "so-called justified" by this fantasy genre. But if you took her actions into our actual lives, she'd be this overly nosey, female stalker with almost no communication skills. She is basically using people to play with their lives, thinking she is a do-gooder. Rather than having these people make their own choices in life, she pushes them into a certain direction, making them lose their autonomy to make huge life-changing decisions (like who to love, how to live). I always really hated the movie Amelie because of this god-like do-gooder persona she had playing around with people's lives. There's a difference between helping someone at work (by doing small deeds/favors), to hiding in the shadows, watching your co-workers from afar wondering how to make them behave a certain way to fulfill your own needs. Like she even watched two people fuck in a bathroom, who used to be co-workers who had communication issues. In reality, sex wouldn't be the answer, probably counseling sessions or company training, on how to better work together. Instead of working at their job, they're now wasting company time fucking in a bathroom and eye-fucking each other when they're not. For the sake of the movie, "it's sweet" and "well-intentioned". In reality they'd get fired (like two teachers I had in high school who did this were fired, also happened at work). So yeah, Amelie thinks the answer to everything is to be "coupled-up" and fall in love. Even if it means you do not grow as an indivdual first, and as your own person with your own goals. Romance is not the answer for all life problems, and it never was. Amelie is stuck with a pubescent teenage girl's mentality of love: surface level and immature (not in a good way). :/

Awesome and awe-inspiring. My own relentless positivity in my own fields, teaching and speaking publicly and writing and political activism had taken so many blows in the terrible world of today and in setbacks in my career and life that I realize watching this that I have begun to turn optimistic analysis into a form of work, instead of joy itself. This means that I can never repay the gift I get from your videos. But I can say that you are not alone in being Amèlie, and you have let many of us know that we aren't either. So thank you. And take care of yourself.

my favorite thing about you isn't your insight, or your eloquence, or the way you express your fascinating opinions and discoveries to the audience in a soothing, but not boring, way...... it's how you randomly shout at things in your videos "I AM AMELIE" *"NOT RIGHT NOW"* funniest shit ever. also, STRANGER THINGS, please and thank you

Your authenticity is rare and beautiful. Thank you. Ahhhh, Mikey...Contact is just...talk about a movie that inspires us to dig deeper, to challenge our beliefs, to get face to face with the ineffable and just marvel at it. I know it's going to lose, but Contact. My vote is always for Contact.

Stranger Things! I have always felt that Amelie is a criminally underrated and under seen movie. Another great video, really makes me want to revisit the movie and look deeper into it.
