That and discussion with Steve at the end about nature of humanity were such amazing pieces of writing... Better than what was in 90% of comic book movies ever made.

The thing I like most about your exploration of movies, I won’t even say criticism because that seems inaccurate, is that you have a knack for finding and articulating the emotional core of a film. It’s one thing to pick apart the structure of a movie, but if you only look at movies as cinematic LEGO sets, you miss so much of what makes movies great. Not everyone can approach movies on the more emotional wavelength, and I think that’s where you get a lot of the complainers from. People who loathe Interstellar and think Wonder Woman is mediocre (and, sigh, yes the people who hate The Force Awakens and now The Last Jedi, though I’m as sick of the discourse there as everyone else) very much seem to fall in this category, but you do a great job of explaining why these movies are great in a way that I think many people who don’t initially get it can understand. Wonder Woman is about love and empathy even in the face of incalculable violence and horror. One recent-ish comic, one of the later issues of Blackest Night I think, almost accidentally hit upon the perfect explanation of Wonder Woman. She is, at her core, the person who loves the most. Not loves anyone, but loves EVERYONE. Her love is so powerful, so forgiving, so deep, that not even the people literally empowered by the cosmic embodiment of the concept of love itself are quite on her level. That is what this movie absolutely nailed. The frame, the resolution, Ares, all these things can afford to be messy because that emotional core of the character was portrayed to utter perfection.

Yeah, I have a friend who utterly dismisses emotional and thematic revelence and props up structure as the end all, beat all of good storytelling. Granted, structure is important-but he flat out dismisses evaluating film from an emotional perspective. "What a film makes you FEEL doesn't matter." Is something he said. Actually said. It floored me somebody who writes for a living can have such a cold, totalitarian view on film.

I was very disappointed with The Force Awakens, still am, but I love Mikeys videos. Hey, you've seen this, but have you considered this angle? With no browbeating or high-horsing. Just simple love for an art and an explanation of a point of view. I mostly agree with his vids, but I always appreciate them.

15:00 - "It's narratively expendable, but thematically irreplaceable." That sums it up perfectly. "Isn't it the best scene in the movie?" And it is, for the exact reasons mentioned. That is when Diana, Princess of Thermistorscaliascurrilousarea *BECOMES* _Wonder Woman_ - full stop. The "climbing the ladder out of the trench" is *THE. BEST.* "reveal of a superhero in iconic outfit" in the history of cinema. No other superhero movie earns its superhero showing up in their outfit more than Wonder Woman does. And it is specifically _because_ what she is doing, she is doing in _opposition_ to her end goal. It is when she goes from being "single purpose robot trying to kill Ares" to "caring human trying to save other humans." The closest any other movie gets to this moment is Star Wars The Force Awakens - the moment Kylo Ren tries to force pull the lightsaber from the snowbank, and instead it goes to Rey. When Rey catches the lightsaber, then assumes a fighting stance and lights it - she becomes the hero.

Going through all the stuff you did this year and still not only giving out so much joy in your love for these movies but also making what I think are some of your best episodes yet, Mononoke, Moon, Logan, Hot Fuzz, Guardians, The Batman one last time and this one, plus some I'm sure I'm forgetting. Not to mention how much I love what you guys are doing with Deep Dive. I'm one of those ppl who looked up to her parents. My mom was my hero growing up so I never really had to look for a female role model bc I had one right there every day. That said, I cried watching this movie, multiple times. When Diana stepped out into No Man's Land, when she singlehandedly fought the soldiers, real tears fell. I wished I had a daughter to watch the movie with bc I was overwhelmed by emotion seeing a female superhero who wasn't a sidekick or secondary character but the lead carrying her own movie. I am one of those ppl who LOVED this movie. Like you said, it had a billion things in it & I loved that nuance. Thank you for this video. It makes me so happy watching your videos, your positivity & honesty. Super glad I found you & subscribed. 😊

6:08 Mikey & and my fellow subscribers: When I saw this movie I was like "Eh, pretty good!" It took Mikey and Lee of CinemaWins for me to begin to understand that this is a gorgeously brave movie and a huge accomplishment. The fact that I did not see that, though I am inclined to be extremely enthusiastic about artistic achievement, says a lot about the inveterate negativity in our popular culture, which thanks to Mikey and Lee and others (The Birdman♡) I am beginning to unshackle myself from, so happily and gratefully.

I'm not saying this applies to this movie because I actually enjoyed wonder woman when I saw it but I think Mikey is one of the only people in existence who can actually polish a poo for lack of a better metaphor because honestly I think he could write up a script that could genuinely make me like virtually anything which is actually great because when he talks about a movie he enhances it's quality and makes it more enjoyable and the better the film the more he adds to it so he can consistently allow us to relive all the best moments of a piece of art and accent all the wonderful parts we missed. tldr thank you mikey your awsome!

Yeah, but you can't really dismiss the fact that it took SOCIETY more than 10 years to acclimate to the idea of a female lead superhero movie. Marvel just started making the awesome movies way before DC. If DC had had their movies start 10 years ago, Wonder Woman wouldn't have been 4th. You can't ignore the fact that it took THE WORLD, the STUDIOS and everyone else to get on board with what's normal and right and stop being so sexist just to appease the "fanbois" who have very sensitive and fragile feelings. Also, like Cody said, there's Jessica Jones and Agent Carter. So there.

It is true, but Marvel did at least give the female characters very significant roles in pretty much every movie. Peggy Carter (in Captain America and her own ABC Show), Hope Pym, Gamora, Nebula, Black Widow, Pepper, Valkyrie, Nakia, Shuri, Okoye, Hela, the Ancient One, Sky/Daisy/Quake, May and Simmons on SHIELD, etc are all fully realized characters and hold their own with the boys so to speak. I'm not sure I like any of them more than Wonder Woman, but I certainly like every one of them very much. It appears that a lot of Marvels upcoming phases will introduce more major female characters even if they don't get top billing. Captain Marvel will likely become the leader of the Avengers and Tony's daughter may well be the next Iron Man.

I don't know why anyone is surprised by the anti-vaxxers. We've been told in both movies and discovered in reality that big business and big gov't cannot be trusted. We're hammered with the message that people, as you said repeatedly until close to the end, people are bad. BUT. We also discover in reality that people are good. Just look at former President Jimmy Carter. Wonder Woman reminded us of that. If the movies can start saying people are good, or at least can be good, maybe we can discover it in real life as well. When I saw the trailer for this movie I said "please please please don't suck" and that was my mantra over and over, even as the opening sequence was rolling... I'm so thankful for this movie, especially now in a world where "superhero" means "grim serious violence" in a world saturated by grim violence and politicians who's only message is more violence. It meant so much to see a hero fight to save, and to truly deeply mourn the loss. The ending, as so many comments before me, didn't entirely live up to the journey that brought us there... but that's true of so many more movies, in a way how could it have been. We as a culture need more wonder woman, whether it be the literal wonder woman or not, we need more truth and love and compassion dressed in gold and held up as a hero.

A lot of comments are missing the point and it's kind of depressing me. First of all, just because Ralph Sepe said something doesn't make it gospel. Heck, he didn't like the no man's land scene so I don't know how trustworthy his opinion is. But second, and most importantly, mike started this video (which isn't a review by the way) by pointing out how useless it is to say things like "the movie is imperfect" or "the movie has problems" when you're doing this kind of analysis. Yeah, he can go down a list of pros and cons about it, but that isn't the point. Movies can and do have glaring flaws, but they can still make you feel something good inside, and that's worth exploring. This isn't like transformers, where millions of people pay tons of money and basically all react with "yeah the effects were cool." this is a movie that affected people, that people didn't just like, they LOVED. It made a lot of people feel something a movie never made them feel before, and you're not interested in finding out WHY? you're just gonna say "but Ralph Sepe said it had bad villains and cheesy acting, so it's a worthless movie?" what's wrong with you all?

I am very torn about wonder woman, mostly because I hate the reason why I loved it. It felt like the first genuine super hero movie I have seen since captain america that used what I like to call the paragon Archetype. On a matter of principles, I feel like that shouldn't be the best part of the movie for me, especially when the movie itself was no slouch. Is is so bad to want my heroes to be heroes? I mean, it's great she isn't perfect. Young, naive, reckless, but she is honestly trying to help people for a reason aside from guilt. Couple that goodness with her lust for life (icecream) and you have the characteristics that are truly inspirational to me.

There’s a self-awareness in WW where the comedic beats work to disrupt what would otherwise come across as the campy melodrama with explosions that characterizes the other DC movies. Thor Ragnarok kinda embodies this - alternating serious and silly (mostly fish out of water) beats. The trench scene where she says “screw it I’m going” as a fish out of water when everyone else has given up because it unites FooW Diana with Serious Diana. I totally see the execs fighting it, because it’s not a scene the other DC movies have. It’s about character and tone and character and maybe even a moral to the story (heroism happens by choice), things that are sorely missing in the other DC movies that are mostly plot and explosions.

Thank you for this video. I love, LOVE this movie so much that I cried twice during your video. Once at the line "who would sing for us", and again at the "a billion things" screen because it showed part of the No Man's Land sequence. I cried in the theater at No Man's Land. So did my wife. When the sequence was over, she asked me, "Why am I crying?" I fumbled to some answer about "the beauty of honor and compassion." I guess I hit close the mark. Anyway, kudos to Patty Jenkins for fighting for that scene, and to her, Gal Gadot, and the whole crew for realizing this vision. It is what we need now.

Okay, I want to jump on the train about "who would sing for us." She, who comes from a militaristic society, which glorifies basically only the warrior (so far as I saw), and when she meets a man who has seen too much war, she honours him for something other than fighting. She honours him for song, and for companionship, and for connection. I a can't imagine how hard it is to respect someone for something your society seems not to care about. Everyone in power in her society, everyone who is looked up to, wears armour and is built like a battleship, and yet she care so much and respects and honours this man so much. This skiny man, who kills people without honour at the distance of a gun, who is shell-shocked and cannot still fight most of the time, and she sees him and validates and affirms him. I'm actually crying

You stated very well why I love stories like Wonder Woman and Harry Potter Also I love that Steve wasn't merely a love interest. He was heroic in his own right. Steve wasn't weak, it's just Diana was a literal Goddess. And they both earned our respect

I know all you do is review movies, but the way you analyze and reveal things about them manages to lift my spirits a little bit.

I love that you put all your attention to what the film IS and not what it SHOULD BE. Too many people reviewing or analyzing movies put a lot of their attention to what a film should be and it just makes discussions go in circles as everyone tries to convince each other who has the better idea. But you sir are helping us understand what the creators behind the films were trying to say.

I watched your Get Off the Floor video today. Everybody is a dick in their 20s. Especially in the position you were in. But it's crystal clear that while you did experience PTSD, you have turned it into post-traumatic growth. You are doing what you can to bring people joy, and you're doing an amazing job. You should be proud of yourself. And I think I speak for a lot of us when I say thank you, and we love you Mikey.

Hi Mikey! I enjoy your videos very much. This one was very distracted for the first ten minutes at which point I was going to drop it but then you found your focus. This essay ended well but the first ten minutes made it iffy. Just FYI and please keep up the good work.

I have been binge-watching your videos for 2 days now, and deeply moved by each of them. You seem to get the emotional core of the movies, which is what attracts me to movies. I just came to a point where I learned about your condition and it makes me respect you even more, how you believe in humanity when the world seems so messed up (this video represents it best). I myself have an auto-immune condition (SLE) and damn, it is hard. But I hold on because of people like you. Keep on sharing, I hope you can spend much more percentage of your life being well (a realistic wish for auto immune brother-/sisterhood). And btw, your video-editing and visuals are out of this world. Love, a new fan.

I want to like this movie so much. Every time I watch it I focus on all the good in it, but I still get frustrated by it. It had such an incredible twist and message at the end, but it just threw it out the window for a big cgi fight

i remember walking out of the theater and telling my friends ""wonder woman is the third best character in this film, the first is Petty Jenkins, and the second is the old couple behind us they ware adorable" i want to see a documentary about her struggle to make this film, because a lot of the problems of the film felt like things personal to Petty, from the action directing which was pretty bad IMO( but that's most likely thanks to Zach Snyder i'm not sure how but it just felt like it) to the fights she had to go through against the producers on what she can do in a super hero film. the more i think of it the more it feels like a great idea. please pull some strings Mikey, this could be amazing.

I love every single time you get *personal*. Yes, all the wild swings. What you are teaching me, is how to discuss stories and films in full depth, from the micro level to the macro one, including reflections on the bigger meaning of things, without ever even remotely sounding like the boring, snobbish type of critic.

I am sitting here at 28 seconds after 10 minutes, and 10:08 has me in tears with the memory of Diana going "over the top." When we saw it in the theater, my wife looked at me and asked, "Why am I crying?" I could only say throug my tears "Because it was so beautiful." Add to that tragic and honorable. And "who would sing for us" is possibly the most apt and beautiful dialogue ever written.

I've been holding out on watching this because it took me a while to see the movie and then I did and... well I found it lacking. That being said, I appreciate this video a lot Mikey, I appreciate your perspective regardless of my own feelings on the movie and your optimism about film in general keeps me coming back. As always, thank you for Movies with Mikey.

Still so proud to be from the UK where movies like this and Star Wars are largely made, but still frustratingly confused as to why we don't shout about it more, or have open set days/exhibits or studio tours or movie-based theme parks (aside from the Harry Potter tour and that Paramount theme park that's been 'in development' for about 10 years.....).

This is my second comment on your channel since I was referred to it by CinemaWins, but would like to offer my two bits on Wonder Woman. Your assessment of 'Doing good things for the sake of just doing good things' is the biggest reason I love this movie. It truly is the heart of it. I'm an old retired guy that found this movie inspirational for more reasons than I can list. First and foremost, the character of Diana just exemplifying empathy, understanding, and love to humankind is a standard that should be held up even though maintaining that, regardless of the negativity surrounding us today, that should be strived for. While the first statement is the heart of the movie, that is its soul.
