Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Oboe Concerto in C major, K. 314 was originally composed in Spring or Summer 1777 for oboist Giuseppe Ferlendis (1755--1802) from Bergamo, then reworked by the composer as a concerto for flute in D major in 1778. The concerto is a widely-studied piece for both instruments and is one of the more important concerti for the oboe. As with his Flute Concerto No. 1, the piece is arranged for a standard set of orchestral strings, two oboes, and two horns. The piece itself is divided into three movements:
I. Allegro aperto
II. Adagio non troppo
III. Rondo: Allegretto.
While the original version for oboe had been lost before Alfred Einstein wrote Mozart: His Character, His Work, the oboe origin of the flute concerto was suspected then, in part because of references in letters to a now-missing oboe concerto, as Einstein wrote, and of similar details in the orchestral string lines which suggested a transposition was used. Also, Einstein noted the two scores in D Major and C Major of the K. 314 Concerto in the Library of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna, which led to the belief that the oboe concerto was the origin of the flute concerto. The orchestra parts of the composition and solo oboe part in C were rediscovered by Bernhard Paumgartner in Salzburg, in 1920.

The oboe is a gorgeous instrument which becomes sublime, almost divine, when given to the care of a master like Mozart. Only 21 when he wrote this masterpiece. Amazing achievement!

True. Mozart just draws EVERYONE in. Chopin and Tchaikovsky are my favorite too but Mozart is just for everybody. His music is SEEMINGLY light and easy but once you try playing it, GAAAAAAH!!!! So intense and complex, but the music you produce makes people float. Shame he had to die at 35!! Imagine what he could produce at age 50 or 60..

The oboe is such an enigmatic instrument - I wish there was much more available! The Baroque contains a proportionally greater amount, but the Classical was able to use the 'new instrument' - the Clarinet (which is also a delight to hear). Even so, the resonance of the Oboe's sound (rather reminiscent of the human voice) is captivatingly appealing to me. This particular piece is achingly beautiful in itself. Many thanks, "Am4s3usMOz4rt", for posting it here, on KZbin.

Mozart is the only music I never get tired of hearing. Every modern musician of every gentre I ever liked, or at one time was among my favorites I've outrown or I get tired of listening to eventually. Not Mozart. Mozart music ever moves me, often to tears, even after I've heard the same music for decades. It ever sounds extraordinary. Mozart is my primary music teacher as well as C.P.E. Bach. I let the best music in the world inform me about how to write music. Mozart Lesson #1: Spare no expense when it comes to stretching the 'imagination' beyond limit. There is no such thing as 'too much' musical material that can be packed into one song. There is no simplicity for simplicity sake. This is not pop music. This is extraordinary music that moves the soul. There are no limits. It can't just be okay. Mozart shows us that musical ideas have universes of possibility off the charts beyond what most people would be satified to settle with. Truly great music captures the heart. No one does that better than Mozart and that's why we adore him like no other.

Mozart, being my favorite composer, is constantly played in my home...However, I have heard almost every single piece, except this oboe concerto I have skipped over many times considering the oboe unworthy of a solo concerto. Ofcourse old Wolfie proved me wrong and I love it. Especially the Adagio non troppo, which is beautiful. I still think his greatest slow movement is the andante from the Horn concerto #4. Amazing!

extraordinarily nice tone from the soloist - reedy, sweet, rich, with a good range of dynamics - from lyrical and sweet to loud and brassy, almost like a bagpipe chanter at times. Must use fairly hard reeds and have powerful lungs to have such reserves of power and volume. To say nothing of the circular breathing required for some of the longer passages. I'm very impressed!

His compositions are filled with wonder.. yes, classical music (especially Saint Saens, Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky) are filled with that dreamy-magical energy, but Mozart's music is like purifying your dark and damaged soul--- cleansing it. I dont know what kind of man he WAS but he must be very fun and light. What he has is serious talent, combined with his ability to not take music seriously, instead magically... like that?

Una maravilla de concierto, como todo lo de Mozart, pero en este concierto el oboe como protagonista crea un ambiente íntimo, recogidoque sugiere tantas cosas.Excelente

you must be kidding....Holliger is THE premier oboe solist anywhere. He teaches master class at Freiburg Konservatorium but spends most of his time performing solos throughout the world. . His wife is a harp Virtuoso and has the same schedule. He plays custom Rigoutat oboes.

Even though I like the bassoon more (no offense oboe players), the oboe is amazing and beautiful.
