"Italy, officially the Italian Republic, is a country in Southern and Western Europe. It consists of a peninsula that extends into the Mediterranean Sea, with the Alps on its northern land border, as well as islands, notably Sicily and Sardinia. Italy shares its borders with France, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia and two enclaves: Vatican City and San Marino. It is the tenth-largest country in Europe by area, covering 301,340 km2 (116,350 sq mi), and third-most populous member state of the European Union, with a population of nearly 60 million. Its capital and largest city is Rome; other major urban areas include Milan, Naples, Turin, Florence, and Venice.
In antiquity, Italy was home to numerous peoples; the city of Rome, founded as a Kingdom, became a Republic that conquered the Mediterranean world and ruled it for centuries as an Empire. With the spread of Christianity, Rome became the seat of the Catholic Church and the Papacy. During the Early Middle Ages, Italy experienced the fall of the Western Roman Empire and inward migration from Germanic tribes. By the 11th century, Italian city-states and maritime republics expanded, bringing renewed prosperity through commerce and laying the groundwork for modern capitalism. The Italian Renaissance flourished during the 15th and 16th centuries and spread to the rest of Europe. Italian explorers discovered new routes to the Far East and the New World, leading the European Age of Discovery. However, centuries of rivalry and infighting between city-states left the peninsula divided. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Italian economic importance waned significantly." - wikipedia

Well Italy has more UNESCO World Heritage Sites than any other country in the world. I've lived here for 54 years since leaving the UK in 1970 and I've been to most of the major cities and archeological sites, as well as to some places in Sicily and Sardinia but I know that I've hardly even scratched the surface of what there is to see and experience here.

The houses in Venice (and elsewhere) are built on stilts made up of thousands of tree trunks.

0:40 Nah! Of course we Germans don't think Germany is more beautiful than Italy. Why else would it be our #2 vacation destination (#1 is our own Baltic coast and #3 our own North Sea coast)? But unlike other European countries, Germany is more beautiful than it gets credit for, I think. 12:26 There were already natural islands in the lagoon before Venice was built. But it's all sandy, muddy soil, so they took thousands and thousands of tree trunks and drove them headfirst into the ground. That way they had a solid foundation on which to build their city. There are no "streets" in Venice, but there are pedestrian alleys and squares between the canals. There are no cars at all. Everything is transported by boat. 19:00 Of course you can get married in Milan Cathedral if you are Roman Catholic. And of course there are services several times a day, not just on holidays - after all, it is a cathedral.

Before ww2 Germany was probably more beautiful than Italy. Maybe if AfD takes power a significant part of that lost beauty will be restored.

VENICE: the city was founded on a bunch of tiny sandy islands in a marshy area north of the river Pò delta, by people fleeing from the mainland, menaced by barbarian incurions after the fall of the western roman empire. It took like 3 centuries you become a proper city, and thanks to the power of its naval fleet it started to grow more and more, so they had to expand beyond the area of those islets. To do do they used wooden poles sunk deep and tight in the sandy ground, to use as foundation. Iirc Rick Stevens has a good documentary about Venice history (a city that once dominated the Mediterranean, and only Napoleon could conquer). Currently there is only 1 road+railway leading to the city, it was built in the late XIX century. There’s a parking structure next to the train station. If you ever played ASSASSIN’S CREED II it gives you a very accurate idea of how Venice is (the same cannot be said for the other locations in the game).

But yeah, 99% of the times you see places built in impossible locations, it was usually for defensive reasons (and Venice was unconquered for 1000 years)

16:58 BOLOGNA! My city! The more leaning tower, Garisenda, is currently on alert mode, they’ve found cracks and they fear it could collapse (we had a biggish earthquake some 10 years ago). Worth to mention, Bologna has the oldest University in Europe, founded in 1088, and was the first european city to abolish slavery in 1257. What you call “spaghetti alla bolognese” does not exist: we would never put ragù on slippery spaghetti, it goes waaay better on tagliatelle! Proper “spaghetti alla bolognese” are not with ragù, but with tuna, onion and tomato. Look for “sfogline bolognesi” to see how we make tagliatelle, tortellini and lasagne!

Hi there from near Milan. You can see in this video that show you how they build Venice. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bWjSnoyaZa-Cm6M They have even diverted the course of the river Po (the major river in Italy, very rich in sediments coming from alps and apennines), between 1600 and 1604, to avoid the lagoon being clogged by those sediments (Taglio di Porto Viro is called).

Sorry, i know i’m going to go in nitpicking berserk 🙄 SARDINIA: how do you talk about Sardinia without mentioning even once its mysterious ancient civilazions, who left us so called “magic wells” and “giants’ tombs”, along hundreds of incredibly old stone villages called “nuraghi”, with amazing bronze and stone statuettes. Look for “nuragic civilization”, you won’t be let down! Also the beautiful cities of Sassari, Cagliari and Alghero are well worth a mention.

Yeah, the Duomo in Milan (like all main italian churches) is a functioning church, according to their website they have 6 masses a day. It’s possible to get married (with catholic rite) in the Duomo, but you’ll need to fill out A LOT of bureaucract, and to ahem… oil many cogs, if you know what i mean.

2 friends of mine bought a brand new motorhome 20 years ago and set off on a round trip through Italy, that was the plan. At the first stop in Milan, they took a break and had an espresso and two glasses of wine, as it was only midday. When they returned to the large car park where their camper was parked, all that was left was the chassis and engine. In broad daylight in the middle of the city. There must have been hundreds of witnesses.😂 I would have liked to have seen their faces.

@@arnodobler1096 i’m not sure about “in the middle of the city” as in “downtown”, an area where’s no way there are car parks large enough to accomodate a motorhome. But yeah, in many areas of the city i’m pretty sure that could happen today too.
