This is a compilation of a few videos. It shows what glaze was applied and how it was layered with the last half of the video show post firing results. I cover the glaze combo again in the end if you want to fast forward to the post firing portion.

Thank you for the detailed instruction on what you did for each of those pieces. I’m still pretty new to pottery and glazing is such an adventure. I appreciate the specificity on how you achieved the colors you got.

Very nice work. Love the bottle with the ancient jasper, I thought that one was going to run off the pot but it didn't. You sure are good at have no run offs.

the pot with the smokey Merlot and the obsidian these are both amaco? PC57 SMOKEY MERLOT & C1 OBSIDIAN Celadon line? So the middle of the pot is just bare clay? I do love that purple you got! I see one is a plant pot and you left the inside unglazed? so that helps the plant to keep some moisture? just wondering about plants and plant pot designs. I would love to make a plant pot. I do hand building. You were talking about going in over the obsidian where you did the inside on another pot. So you just pour or brush over the inside and refire? to correct that inside black with the speckles? and you find that works well? I really enjoyed seeing this work of yours!

Yes, they are both Amaco and you are correct PC57 Smokey Merlot and C1 Obsidian, the bare stripe the in middle has no glaze. I use masking tape to cover the bare and get the straight lines. Most plant pots I leave unglazed on the inside. I’ve seen it done both ways but I feel unglazed gives the roots something to hold on to. Not so slick like a shiny glaze surface. On the black (Osidian) inside bowl I sprayed it with hairspray and let it dry before re-glazing it with the drips. You can do this on the outside of pots as well. When it dries it’s tacky helping the glaze hold onto the already glazed surface. The hairspray burns off in the kiln.

Thank you that very informative!!! How much layering is too much? Just kinda rule of thumb general number. I’m new to glazing and I don’t have a frame of reference of what’s too much or too little. Thanks again!

My experience is around 3-4 coats but if I keep glazes towards the top of a pot and am not concerned with run off I will layer away using up to 6-7 layers of multiple colors. It is best to know your glazes so far as which ones run and which ones are stable. I use mostly Amaco or Coyote glazes and their webpages tend to list which ones are known runners. Both Amaco and Coyote have Facebook group pages you can join and learn from other potter's experience as well as ask questions. It is a great place to see different glaze combos also. Thanks for watching and commenting. I am glad it is useful to you.

I put Smokey merlot over obsidian and every piece in a few different firings came out orange peel texture, any ideas why? Thanks

Questions: Was every coat dry before the next coat? How many coats of each? What clay did you use and what cone was it bisque fired to? I’ve never had that happen with that combo but I have with others. Generally when I put heavy coats on when the last coat wasn’t dry.
