Amaco Potters Choice & Celadon Glazes: How to Save Money by Mixing and Layering your Own Colours

Hello again from The Pottery Corner my studio near Chichester on the South Coast of England. In this video I run through how you could save money on Amaco Glazes by making your own test tiles then mixing and layering glazes. Why buy Amaco Tangelo when you can mix your own from Snapdragon and Marigold for instance! It is possible to mix your own unique glaze colours to use on your own work and to save money by mixing glazes you already have instead of buying new colours. I also show how I store my glazes and test tiles to give you an idea of how you can store your own to make selection of glazes easy for your own work.

@@thepotterycorner thank you!. I like some of the Mayco glazes. I find many run a lot which can be pretty if you know that already! I am going to try the Mayco product called Stroke and Coat. The Amaco celadons are my absolute favorites!

@@lindapowers6405 - i have tried stroke and coat - my advice - Don't apply too thickly. Two normal coats is plenty. Mayco and I will probably never be good friends but I may try some more tiles just to convince myself of this! 😅🙏

This was so helpful. I love your storage of the glazes. I will look in our group studio to see if there is a nook for the jars. Right now they are down on the lower level and you have to either sit on the floor or a chair to look at them. We could really use this organization tip. I also got the idea to make my celadon test tiles in a different shape because I thought that’s what you did here! I’m wondering if it would be helpful to make a test style of two places, mixed and a second test style of the two layered (and I suppose 1/ third, with opposite order of layering!) Absolutely terrific presentation Sarah. I have been remiss about doing test tiles but 2021 will see me start. I have ordered a Paragon Q-11-A test kiln and look forward to doing a lot of testing. I have been very lucky with Iron Lustre and it is one of my favourite glazes firing @ ^ 5/6. Hope you can find a solution to it's misbehaving. I will also have to keep track of the clay types as I have 3 at present I have been using as well the mixed up recycle lot. I will watch this again and be taking notes of your neat combos. Hi Freddie - great to hear from you. Interesting about Iron Lustre - from the tile that I get, it looks like I am getting the colour where the glaze breaks over texture on the picture on the Amaco bottle - I have never had it come out green - not once. I fire to 1230 degrees C (which is pretty much half way between cone 5 and cone 6) so I suspect my kiln is either too hot or too cold for it. Have fun with your test kiln - a great idea to get stuff through without the two day firing/cooling that goes on here. Pretty freezing in the UK at present - we have got above zero degrees for two days and the wind chill makes it feel like minus 6 - we're not called Southern Softies for nothing down here on the coast. Brrrrr really cold! I'll look out for the photo via the Facebook page - thanks for watching and commenting. Much appreciated.

MIss Sarah...you are so very organized. Sadly, I am not as disciplined as you are----I simply jump in with both feet and glaze---and for anyone reading--- I will attest to what Miss Sarah is saying---- save yourself pain---heartache---and tons of $$$ do a test tile first! I used Copper Red and Flambe on my largest pieces---BEFORE a test tile.... thankfully I learned from Miss Sarah about "RE"glazing! but drats.... anyhow--- I am trying the flex a new muscle called "Control" and make a tile before glazing a project :) As always---thank you for the content...and the recipe on that amazing pink! I've got some speedball underglaze, if I paint that on the bottom of a piece in the greenware phase, when bisque firing, do I need to protect the kiln from the underglaze, as I would with regular glazes? @@mirandadavis5887 - hi again - I haven't used Speedball underglaze so it's difficult to answer your specific question. I have, in the past, used a brand of underglaze which stuck so I am careful if I do use underglaze underneath. However, the underglaze pencils (which look like a pencil but are underglaze not lead) don't seem to stick. I guess the only way to find out about the Speedball is to give it a try on a test tile or something put it on a cookie in the kiln and see what happens. Sorry not to have a better answer but hope that helps.

Hi Sarah. My complements to how very well organized your glaze storage is. I love the test tiles with magnets & velcro. These are great tips! And your glaze combo review was excellent. I knew the celadon glazes can be mixed together, but would never have thought to try others. And nobody could ever bore me with glaze combinations! I can spend hours searching the web for glaze combos. Just last night I was trying to find good combos for deep firebrick; happy you had some to share! My poppy head survived the bisque fire! I was a little concerned that I may not have joined the half spheres well enough, but all held together pretty good. Ready for part 2! :0) Thanks for sharing and stay well!

Hi Romannobridge. Thanks for watching. Yes, I weigh the glaze mixes on scales so that I can replicate the colour if I run out when applying! Also you can vary the percentages. I usually use 50/50 Snapdragon and Snow and have been using this combination for a while without problems. Just make sure it is thoroughly mixed together. Hope that helps 🙏 🙂

Some good combinations there. I must do some more! Textured turquoise is a real performer. Have you tried it under Smokey merlot? It gives a fab pinky mottled effect I do dip my glazes though. I haven't mixed smokey merlot and textured turquoise yet...... trots off to studio..... Any suggestion to use Tourmaline most welcome as I just seem to manage dull horse poo green no matter what I do with it!! Oh and to add - I envy your tidy and organisation ability!

Thanks Ed. I fire to 1225 degrees centigrade which is pretty much the top end of the guide on the Amaco bottles. A few glazes therefore change from the printed colour on the bottles which is annoying! Thanks so much for watching 😊

Thanks so much for this lesson! Earth Nation ceramics just did a glaze review of Rainforest and he showed that by thinning it with water he got a sky blue, just lighter than the color you got by layering with Snow.

Love your videos! Layering and mixing are great ways to increase your palette options. I can tell you why your Iron Lustre and Flambe are coming out differently than the pictures: Iron Lustre becomes more honey brown as it's fired hotter. The tile on the pot is fired to cone 5, your tile looks a bit hotter. Your application of Flambe is excellent, but it appears to be interacting with your clay body. We have found that some clay bodies (like Sibelco's white studio stoneware clay) interact to turn the glaze a frosty blue. We haven't figured out what ingredient makes the glaze turn blue, but some clay bodies will get that result. ~Cara

Brilliant, right up my street; You’ll be mixing your own glazes from scratch next! I have loads of test tiles....I’ve had fun recently mixing the lovely rainbow Amaco satin matte colours with white to get various shades of more pastel colours. When you get a disgusting result from a test tile at least you know you haven’t ruined one of your pieces. I’ve not had as successful a purple as you have with obsidian layered under Smokey merlot so was wondering if you would mind sharing what your firing schedule for that was ? My obsidian / Smokey merlot layering was fired up to 1240 with a 7 minute soak.....

Hi Barbara - thanks for watching and commenting. I fire up to 1230 with a 10 minute soak. Two good coats of Obsidian under two good coats of Smokey Merlot. This is a good stable combination and comes true within the realms of different people application. I have dabbled with mixing my own glazes- however the variables are too many for my work - I like to know exactly what I'm going to get!😁

Hello Belinda - thanks for watching. 50% Amaco snow Mixed (not layered) with 50% amaco Snapdragon. Weigh the glaze on scales so you can recreate if you run out on your piece. Hope that helps 🙏

Hello I’m new to this type of clay and I am just up with your videos now. Can I ask a question about this subject when you’re making these tiles do you bisque fire then paint the underglazes on or are you painting the underglaze on green wire first then after you’ve done them is this how the colour looks or are you put in a clear glaze over the top for the shine. When I use a new glaze or underglaze I do a test tile - bisqued - and then on the underglaze tiles I use the underglaze without a transparent glaze over on one half and with a transparent over on the other half so I can see how the underglaze comes out either way. Like your glaze-keeping records :-) I wonder...if the Flambe glaze which came out bluish colour, might due to high fire (although its stated cone5-6) that burnt off the reddish pigments leaving the blue behind? I watched a KZbin video from US, the potter had mentioned that red is a colour that is not easy to achieve and can be burnt off if the kiln is set at higher firing range. Cant remember the video's name...It was interesting because I had a dish that was applied with a blue underglaze and after firing, it came out purple! Very strange!

Hiya and thanks so much for watching and commenting. Your comment makes perfect sense. My kiln fires to a high Cone 6, especially in the bottom of the kiln which is hotter, and therefore you are probably right - the red pigment is burning off at this temperature. I have a purple underglaze that fires blue so again this would fit. Just goes to show the importance of test tiles in your own particular kiln (or community kiln) to see how the glazes come out because there can be vast differences! Great to have you along. 😀

Hi Sabina - A sharpie would just burn off in the kiln! I use an underglaze pencil to write on the back of the tiles - you could paint on underglaze. I use a numbering system so I know which tiles are which combinations. Hope that helps.😀

Hi Philip and thanks for watching. Watering down a glaze will not affect the colour only the thickness. If you are trying to get shading you will need to mix your colour with possibly white to get a change in the tone. Make sure however that you try this out before applying to any precious work. I did a test using a Botz brown ( for a tree trunk) and it was a really different shade watered down about 4 shades lighter but as you say not a thick coating .. would this be Detrimental to an outside Installation ? Hmmmm the most used Amaco Glazes that I personally use and can't live without would be: Fog, Storm, Rainforest, obsidian, seaweed, weeping plum, ancient jasper, cobalt, oatmeal and smokey merlot. You can make a lot of combinations from these. Happy test tiling 😁

Good day Sarah Wondering when I reglaze do I spray hairspray and glaze right away or do I glaze after the hair spray has dried. I'm doin some refires but not quite sure when to glaze after spraying hairspray.

Hi Heidi- thanks for your message. If you spray lightly with hairspray (I.e. so the piece is not dripping), leave to dry and glaze over. The glaze takes ages to dry because the piece is no longer porous so if adding more than one coat may take a couple of days to dry. Hope that helps 😀
