Up until last night I would have agreed with Ste about Zirkzee not being able to hold the ball, but last night he improved this part of his game MASSIVELY! He literally changed the game in our favour! He was the reason Utd had more chances in the last 30 minutes, and he was the reason Amad had more space to make runs in the box.

I think we shouldn’t base our concern on one game, Ugarte and Lenny have both shown before that they are good. Giggs, Rooney, CR7 even Keane had bad days! There comes a point where we are going to have to stop the “He’s trash” narrative. It serves no purpose. Even the Anthony thing. Like I get that he isn’t cut out for MU or the PL but to constantly have to read and hear your own fans saying al sorts of negative things about you. It’s not going to make him a better player. You're absolutely right. I'm not concerned at all about Mainoo, Ugarte and Yoro. They are top players. Amorim said it in the press conference, they are tired. We need to look at the bigger picture, we are progressing, the team fighting spirit is back and we got 3 points today. Whatever Amorim is doing in training is starting to work, we're missing a few more details technically but we're on the right track. I believe in Amorim.

The game wasn’t nearly as bad as it looked and felt, Onana played out of his skin, we gave up a terrible OG, missed some ridiculous chances, and Amad the second coming of Rooney absolutely smashed it in the end… We’re going to struggle the rest of this season, and we’ll be lucky to finish in the top half of the table. It really was as bad as it felt, this Southampton team are one of if not the worst performers in EPL history at this stage of the season. We were shocking for large parts of the game, Onana saved us multiple times from being embarrassed, I'm sure if those 2/3 chances go in the lads would have dropped their heads and we would have been cooked. We are deep into the chest cavity, there’s blood all over the place, and we aren’t sure if the patient is actually going to make it out or not. But we are, finally, having the open heart surgery the doctor called for four (?) years ago… It was abysmal, and absolutely the best we could possibly expect for where we are as a club. The Glazers cooked us good, and the bills have come due.

Bruno can pair with Ugarte in midfield. I don’t know, the only other option is just not having the personnel to make Amorim’s formation work at this point. We just don’t have a CF or Wingbacks or even the right kind of 10s. I’d be willing to clone Amad and try him at both WBs and a 10 🤷‍♂️

The team compression was the real big issue, no wonder the midfield 4 were looking totally ineffective, covering larger space, on the other hand, Amorim knew Southampton will go man to man and all that vertical space brought their energy down by the end of it. Still, I would've preferred if we played more compressed and tried to implement the close lines building up slowly that he wants in the long run, even if that gives the opposition a clear opportunity to run behind us, but the truth is, we really don't have enough in the tank to play that high line right now, the defenders naturally are dropping.

The running theme of the last couple of seasons is that United can get battered by any team, regardless of the level. Remember Coventry? Southampton's attack looked like bloody Barcelona at times. United were sweating trying to stop them from scoring. Sulemana was all over the defence. Crazy stuff. In the end Soton's weakness at the back told and a little bit of quality from Amad, Eriksen etc was enough.

Weird game - we deserved the win by the end but only really got going once Collyer/Zirkzee came on. Until then, we were probably on course for the worst performance and result of the season. Onana: 7.5/10 - Kept us in the game in the first half. Mazraoui: 6/10 - Dogged but nowhere near his best on the left. Martinez: 5.5/10 - Struggled with Dibling but needs an actual LWB alongside him for that reason. De Ligt: 6/10 - Solid but looked a bit tired Yoro: 4.5/10 - Struggled all game, but like Martinez, wasn’t getting much help from his RWB. Amad: 9/10 - hat trick won the game near single-handedly Ugarte: 6/10 - not at his best; dallying on the ball but still won a lot of duels and hit some nice passes. Mainoo: 4.5/10 - wasn’t at it today; tank concerns me. Bruno: 5.5/10 - industrious but nowhere near his best Garnacho: 5.5/10 - thought he did reasonably well considering the speculation/new role, etc. but ultimately failed to truly contribute Hojlund: 3.5/10 - seems to be getting worse at the moment. Needs to come out and reset. Biggest concern of the night for me was Leny Yoro, it wasn't just that Sulemani had him on toast all night, he didn't have the support because Amad's natural position is higher, other teams will be looking out for when Amorim plays an offensive wingback and will then target that side, we saw Bodo/Glimt do the same thing when Malacia started on the left wing back, Martinez had too much to do and not enough support.

In this system I think Garnacho would make a better WB than 10 and he was always a better sub than a starter. I would bring him on as a wingback so he can run at a tiring defence from deep. Casemiro and Eriksen both provide more goal threat than Mainoo in terms of goals or assists, in a team that is struggling for goals I think one of them have to play next to Ugarte. Maguire when fit is a threat from corners. Apart from new players coming in the only way I see this squad scoring more goals is when Shaw comes back for the short period before he gets injured again. His delivery from out wide is something sorely missing on the left. I’m at the point with Hojland where he either needs to be sold or sent out on loan to rediscover his form and confidence, it’s just not happening for him.

Just did a quick check and Amad in the last 33 days has stolen 7 points from the opposition out of nothing for us. If u take off those 7 points from our tally we're literally 3 points off the drop. If we go further back: - assisted a goal that got us a point vs Ipswich. That's another point he's got us Actually thats the end of the list. So we'd be 2 points away from relegation without Amad.

I actually felt like Maguire's marshaling of the defense helped during the two games. That's not something I felt De ligt didn't do that well in a similar manner. Thoughts?

Few players were off it but let's not go crazy, Southampton had a lot of good chances that they didn't finish, but so did we. Garnacho missed a sitter, Hojlund and Mainoo both had good 1 on 1 scoring opportunities but chose to pass instead; better decision making and execution and we are 3-0 in the first 30 minutes.

We were too negative. There were times when the commentators on tnt pointed out that when Mazraoui should've been in the final third pressing their fullback, he was actually *behind* our back 3. That side was s'hpton's outlet all game. To compound that, whenever Southampton went on the attack Mainoo and Ugarte dropped so deep they were practically a part of the back 5, forming a back 7. And then Højlund was non existent up front... Yet should've had an assist for garnacho. Literally front to back the squad is just awful.

It's really not that complicated. Against Liv/Ars we could sit back and compact the middle, and exploit space in behind. Against Soton the onus was on us to push higher, leaving spaces which wouldn't have been exploited by Soton so much if many of our players didn't have significant in-possession/build-up deficiencies.

Why is Ste ignoring how good De Ligt and Onana were? Onana keeps us in thag game, before Amad bailed us out. Tbh Bruno was good too, he was starting the attacks for any chances we had, but we were wasteful. Southampton deserved way more though, that's a really concerning performance

What Amorim can do to improve this is to find someone to play in the 8, who can dictate play, Ugarte and Mainoo can't do that and neither can Bruno. We need a Micheal Carrick type player and Zubimendi would probably excel in that role. Is it too soon for Gore should he recover from his injury? Also Amad needs to play higher today should be a one off as Dalot is suspended, which also highlights the need for the left back/wingback. Mazraoui should only play in the right.

His system relies on wingbacks pinning back the opposition fullbacks, hitting the byline and crossing to a striker who can find space. We don't have any of those elements in the team. Mazraoui is a great player but not a wingback. Dalot is a RB not a LWB. They're too defensively minded. Hopefully in the summer we can recruit more attacking wingbacks and it will make all the difference. We just have no outlets up top atm.

The priority for United this season is to win Europa League since winning it will automatically qualify for Champion League. And qualify to Champion League next season will improve United finance.

I think we are reaching the point where we can say that Amorin 3-4-2-1 isn't working. It goes ok when we set up defensive and the opposition press or if we set up to attack and the opposition sit back but if the set up doesn't match the opposition style then we end up in trouble and need an individual performance to recover anything. There is no easy way to change style in 3-4-2-1 without substituting half the team. ETH tactics didn't work and I don't think Amorins will either his win rate at united is way off 50% and that's really poor for a united manager. I think it's important not to start buying a whole new squad for Amorin when his tactics look doubtful for the premier league. If he can't find a way of getting his system to quickly be able to cope and exploit the opposition weakness and nullify their threats I don't think he can be left to try to run the team for long. I think sir rat should start by sacking some more of the directors he bought in that said Amorin was the magic wand that would fix united as we are way off being in a position to win titles in the 2 years remaining on his 3 year plan.

The performance was woeful and if that's not the takeaway after this game, then our fundamental play will not improve. There's a danger to having individuals bailing us out like this, it let's us not learn the right lessons.

People forget Southampton are playing with no pressure on them and when teams like that have a goal to hold onto its harder again. Theyve also been better than results suggest quite few small margins. Yes United should win comfortably at home but tiredness plus opposition playinh with pressure off meant it was always gonna be harder in reality than on paper. Always felt like once United got one theyd go and win. 2nd half Garnacho, Bruno, De Ligt, Zirkee, Amad, Collyier all put very good shifts in. Garnacho made a few great balls and was let down by team mates. His decsion making has been noticeably better v Arsenal and Southampton. I was suprised he didnt rotate a couple due to ET v Arsenal but early subs changed game Ugarte, Mainoo, Hoijland all looked shattered from 15 mins in.

You can’t play out if your front three don’t look after the ball properly, giving you a chance to move up. Hojlund, Bruno and Garnacho can’t be the front three. Zirkzee changed the game and the idea that “he can’t hold up the ball” might be the maddest take I’ve ever seen someone make.

What is Ste on about? Zirkzee did a good job of holding the ball up when he came on. He could have made better decisions on when to shoot/pass when in on goal but his hold up play changed the game. Odd opinion.

Bro he's faster than Mainoo in midfield, has been far better than him every time he plays while mainoo has only played like 2 good games in the entire season. We are in a relegation battle, next 5 league games are Brighton (h) Fulham (a) Palace (h) Spurs (a) Everton (a) I think we'll struggle to get much from those games, we just got outplayed by one of the worst prem teams of all time. We are only ok at playing defensive and on the counter, when other teams let us have the ball we are useless.

Southamptons left winger the young kid who outpaced Yoro looks really good for a winger might be somone to look into and if they relegated we can get him on the cheap had a lot of energy was shooting a lot quite strong and saw a lot of passion I really like him maybe work on his crossing would be like 2 Amad with 1 being younger.

Southampton was getting between out lines so well but at the end it was tough but due to amad and also zirkzee won us a game rasmus needs to improve his game with the back to the goal ugarte and mainoo had off game

The team needs to get over the nerves playing at Old Trafford, ignore the criticism and just play ball. Also, they have been playing a lot of games in a short period of time under a new stystem and new manager. Their top players are all young and have not much experience so there will be good days and bad. I can't judge this squad until next fall when Amorim can get some new players in that fit the style he wants. Our primary striker is 21 years old! He needs to be a back up to develop properly. Zirkzee is new to the league and is starting to show some real positives to his game. What we need is two or three experienced players to help these youngsters and we don't have them at this point. I have forgotten this season as far as place in the table and now am concentrating on what this club will do in the summer
