F. Murray Abraham won the Oscar for his role as Salieri as well as the film winning Best Picture.

The director wanted Abraham for Salieri because he saw how defeated and cynical that passionate man had become in real life. It was an immaculate choice.

If there's such a thing as a perfect film, "Amadeus" might fit in that category.

I concur. When the movie came out , I just couldn't get enough of it. Went and saw it at least 5 times . Never saw similar movie before , I was mesmerized by by Mozart's music.

One of my favourite bits of movie trivia... during the night of the Oscars, as the evening progressed it was getting quite evident to people that Amadeus was going for a clean sweep at all the awards for the year. I don't recall who it was, but when the winner of the best score went up and gave their speech, the first words out of their mouth were "I was lucky Mozart was not eligible this year." Crowd went wild. 😂😂😂

Salieri and Mozart were contemporaries but more like colleagues and certainly not enemies. While the world is far less familiar with Salieri's works, they are still played today. I don't have to tell you that Mozart is still considered a one-in-a-millennium genius. he was apparently a bit coarse in personality but the music is spectacular.

Amadeus was filmed in Prague. The opera house this was filmed in was the very opera house Don Giovanni premiered.

Apparently Salieri was a music instructor for one of Mozart's kids - not really any evidence of any bad blood between them in real life! But this movie and "Dangerous Liaisons" are still some of the best movies of that time period IMHO!

Yes, the actor Jeffrey Jones was in "Deadwood," as well as other films. The character he plays in "Amadeus," is Emperor Josef II. His younger sister was Marie Antoinette of France. Emperor Joseph died of stomach illness. He is entombed in the royal crypt at the Capuchin Chapel in Vienna. Mozart's remains are interred at St. Marx Cemetery on the outskirts of Vienna. Salieri's was rumored to have been involved in Mozart's death. The story is a theory based on rumor. Mozart and Salieri did not have an antagonistic relationship as dipicted in the film, but there was competition.

Apparently, Salieri didn't kill Mozart, but the rumors go back a LONG way. The Play they based the movie on is an adaption of a short drama written by the "father of Russian Literature" Alexander Pushkin, who wrote his version shortly after Salieri died. This role stuck to F. Murray Abraham. In "Last Action Hero" the kid tells Arnie he knows who the big bad is "He killed Mozart!"

You're totally correct, the Emperor is the same actor as the newspaperman from Deadwood. Another film by the same director, Milos Forman, is The People vs. Larry Flynt, another true story I think you would enjoy, about the founder of Hustler magazine, but it is really about free speech

Most people think this is a biopic of W.A. Mozart... in truth it's a psychological thriller about the life of a man who replaced his earthly father for a more heavenly one to fulfill his deep desire for immortality. He devoted his life to that substitute father (God). He could not understand how a pious and righteous man who followed all the laws of God and men was a secondary talent to a vulgar little man who was a force of nature. His hatred was not against Mozart, his hatred was STILL against his father, against God. It's the story of the prodigal son. One son helps the father, tends to the cattle and the crops and cares for the family... but when the wayward wanderlust son comes home, the father kills the fat calf to celebrate his homecoming, forsaking the son that did everything right. In the end, his quest of hatred destroyed him.

To the Hungarians, the Bohemians, the Moravians... Joseph's II titel was "King" and to us Austrians he was Archduke and duke of bla bla bla and prince of yade yade yade... But in his role as the head of the Holy Roman Empire he was Emperor. And as monarchs are addressed with their highest titel first one should call him that way. So it's "the Emperor". 😉
