Thank you! My great grandfather was born in Amalfi, he lived there until he was 21. Amalfi has always been as you described, “a playground for the rich and famous” it used to be a hub for maritime trade, gradually as politicians, religious leaders, and wealthy aristocrats found it, it transitioned from maritime to a gem for the rich. Thank you for the footage as I look more into the actual regions of my family ancestry.

Thanks for the video. That paper museum sounds pretty cool. I have suggested taking a walk to Atrani, we'll see if we actually do it. We'll be in the Amalfi/Positano area for most of one day during our 5 night stay in Salerno during the second leg of our trip to Italy next summer. We're still in the planning stages, but we'll get a better taste of what Italy is, will be when we visit Larino, in the province of Campobasso in the Molise region. It's where my nonno was born, so it'll be emotional as well.

The views of the coastline are exquisite - such vivid colors. Amalfi is certainly a jewel in southern Italy! Thanks Ms Britaly ❤

For more affordable and authentic experiences there are other small towns on the Amalfi Coast, such as Atrani, which is walking distance from Amalfi center.

Sage advice, to go beyond the commercialism and crowds of Amalfi port and up to higher ground where the ravening hordes don't venture. During my 5-day stay in Atrani (just around the corner but surprisingly tranquil in October), the best times were spent hiking with fellow hostelers, mostly on paths used by people and livestock, between the small hamlets dotting the hillside above, finding unpretentious home-style cooking in small family-owned cafes and bars, with the occasional bonus of breathtaking views out to the sea. I wasn't aware of the paper museum then, but I won't miss it again if I get the chance. The Maritime Museum (Arsenale di Amalfi), which portrays Amalfi's fame in commerce and naval power, sounds interesting as well, all the more so for being housed in a monumental example of medieval architecture.

Nice. I agree almost every paradise like Amalfi Coast, or any tropical island throughout the world would barely exist without tourism and I think that's ok for most people. To me the day trippers to any of these places are the ones who really miss the boat, and experience the over touristy shopping mall. If you plan your days with excursions on the water, plentiful hikes like Path of Gods, vineyard, cooking classes, you can enjoy the towns before and after the daytrippers leave. But for those that just want to shop, it is what it is, ha!

Indeed - for some, this experience is what they desire.

I’m travelling to Amalfi in 4 weeks time. Is there going to be cafes, restaurants and bars open or mostly closed?

Nice video. My family is from Salerno so have been to Amalfi a few times. I get what you mean, not exactly fake but relies completely on tourism. Still one of the most beautiful places on earth. I wonder how they are doing next door in Atrani since this year alone we had the Equaliser 3 film and Netflix series Ripley both shot there.

Yes, I'm sure there has been and will be an upsurge in tourists based on this.

When you talk about Amalfi are you talking about the town of Amalfi of the entire Amalfi Coast ?

In this particular video - it’s the town Amalfi

There are a lot of beautiful places along the Amalfi coast. It’s true in that not every part of South Italy is pristine.

I have visited Amalfi. However, I refuse to be gullible in tourist traps!! I don't like to waste money!! I would rather shop around. I wonder if prices drop for food and drink out of season? I remember in one of your videos about a restaurant in Salerno where you pay for one drink, and then you can refill? Is that still the same deal? Thanks for a great video 😊
@MsBritaly9 ай бұрын
Yes, that restaurant still exists in Salerno - it's the place I lovingly call 'the wine fountain' because the wine is inclusive and on tap. It's called La Botte Pazza.

*stares in Nicki Positano* Las Vegas!?😂 But for real, I get it, having the town be centered towards tourists can erase part of the soul of a place.
@MsBritaly9 ай бұрын
Ahahha but Nicki does share her real life there and it isn't always easy. I just think that to feel the soul of a place is how you truly get to know a country.

My advice: you can visit places like Venice and Amalfi, but know that they are extremely touristy with lots of shops and restaurants run by foreigners. Basically fast money grabs offering poor quality products and food. These people couldn't care less about Italian traditions. There is far too much beauty and quality in Italy to waste much time here.
@MsBritaly19 күн бұрын
Yes - I think it’s beautiful to say you’ve visited but I think you can find more genuine places in other parts of Italy!

Having watched half of your video (which confirmed my suspicions) I can say that I will NEVER set foot on that overrated, overpriced tourist trap. Considering the HUGE number of beautiful places in Italy which offer substantial value in architectural, historical and artistic matters, why would any intelligent person go to Amalfi? Thank you Miss Britaly! 🤩

I do think it's amazing to say you've been there but I do think that it is overrated.
