I have the same washer. When selecting normal regular cycle you only get auto sensing even if the knob is set for deep water wash. All other cycles give you a choice.

For anyone who feels they need fabric softener: this is why Downy balls exist. They are roughly $3, you put them in at the beginning of a wash, they spin cycle pops open the lid of the ball to disperse softener. Fabric softener eats machines alive. White vinegar is good, or skip it. Dryer sheets are another option.

Today I just had a defective NTW4516FW4 warranty/service contract replaced. We only had the washer for 1.5 years. The washer was used at least twice daily. We were careful not to overload. For the price the washer did an excellent job cleaning the clothes. You do have to review the manual and watch videos to learn how to use it. For power protection, washer was plugged into a GFI with a surge supressor to protect the electronic components. Amana is made by Whirlpool and I find it quite disappointing that the quality control has gotten worse. Bottom line here is that for any major appliance purchase, you need to budget to include a service contract for any major failures. Overall, appears that we got a bad one in a lot, and judging from other posts, we just got unlucky.

I've had this washer for 5 months now. I can tell you right off the bat, spend a little more and get a better machine. The agitator does not sit flush down so don't be surprised if your favorite clothes get torn. We've had 2 t-shits torn, also 2 socks torn by this machine. The hot water does not work in the "Normal" mode, you must go to any other cycle, then the hot will start, then flip it back to "Normal" to continue getting hot water for whites. Don't bother e-mailing Whirlpool or Amana, response is zero from them. The dealer has changed two circuit boards, fill valves and temp switches to cure the "Normal" hot fill problem. You just learn to put up with poor design.

Take out the 2 screws and the locking mech will be able to be removed and you can insert it like the lid is closed.

The water level choice might be an advantage for a GE washer. The lower end Hotpoint and GE agitator washers have a choice for low medium high water level in addition to "precise fill"

I got this washer for free. These electronic controlled units are NOT like grandmas old timer dial ones. Someone tried to by pass the lid lock switch and fried the control board. I purchased a used board and lid lock switch and now it runs. Ran it through a cycle and hoping it will last but don't know how to add fabric softener as the lid locks through the entire was cycle..Thanks for sharing your thoughts on these units.

It’s called a washer lid lock striker. There are several styles so you wanna look and be sure the one you order matches the one you have. One style has a notch missing at the end and the other is solid.

This washer/dryer pair was already in the house I bought this summer. I'm not sure how the washer can have an HE label on it when it doesn't seem to be an HE washer. Also, I don't feel like there is as much control on the settings with the limited options. Also, there is no fabric softener dispenser. I don't always use fabric softener but there is virtually no way to catch the rinse cycle. The lid locks when it doesn't need to so It makes it hard to add the softener. I also own a front loader in another house & it does a great job on comforters & sheets, etc. It uses less water & less detergent so when this Amana peters out, I will replace it with a front loader.

@Paula M HE washers are junk. You need water to clean. There is a cap you can purchase for cheap to attach to the agitator which will allow you to add fabric softener. Amazon has it.

You can pause the rinse cycle and the lid will unlock. Also, fabric softener traps dirt in clothes and makes them more flammable

How do you get your washer to open and still throw water when you open the lid? If I open it the water stops filling.

The only way to get that is to buy a speed queen which is very expensive. This one the other hand is at a good price and still cleans clothes. That's why this one is recommended.

Deep fill on the normal cycle will not fill your tub you need to use any other cycle but “normal regular”.

I hate this washer. I like to ad vinegar in my rinse cycle. Absolutely no way to add vinegar or fabric softer. As far as I can tell the rinse cycle just squirts water in at intervals; it does not fill with water to rinse. Forget trying to add something you forgot once the wash cycle starts. ..... IF anyone has directions on how to work this machine, please let us folks know.

If you have a fabric softener switch or option to turn on, it’ll do a full water rise cycle (still not sure when / how to add it). Otherwise it doesn’t have a fabric softener option and not designed to be used.

​@@malanprevost3360thats what i use. A downball only seems to work with a different brand of liquid softner though. I dont do downy anymore . Too liquidy thin. I use suavitel liquid fabric softner field flowers and its the best replacement for downy. Downy is too watery nowadays.
