Fun fact : Usher and Joe WERE NOT in the original recording: they were brought in last minute for THIS performance to replace the vocals of....R Kelley !!!! This was around the time of th Aaliyah accusations WITHIN the industry and it wasnt a good look to those in the know .

This song was dumb popular in its time. It was all over black radio (at least in NYC) and the video played on BET a lot. I think D'Angelo wrote it....were you saying you never knew of the song or you never saw the performance? The recorded song is way better than this performance. Later on they had female r&b artists unite to create the song "Freedom" for the Black Panther soundtrack. That ish was DOPE!! If you don't know the song already, look for both the r&b version and the rap remix

BMU song was a anthem with Polynesians in New Zealand in the 90s, still is...quarter of those artists have passed on now. Wouldn't mind seeing Bet or Soul train awards getting whoevers alive to perform it.
