As a psychologist, Amanda’s presentation is consistent with the diagnosis of Narcissistic Personality Disorder, not necessarily Autism. The reason being diagnosed by a mental health professional is important is because we assess for different differential diagnoses (looking at different disorders that may have similar symptoms ) so we’re not treating the wrong thing.

Al often speaks on things he actually has very little knowledge of. A diagnosis by a qualified medical profession IS a clinical diagnosis. Amanda SAID she was DIAGNOSED with autism earlier in the interview way before Shannon scrutinised the validity of her diagnosis. She is now back paddling and throwing Shannon under the bus to try to justify her lies. A psychiatrist diagnoses IS a clinical diagnosis and Amanda would know this so clearly her psychiatrist has NOT diagnosed her. Lastly, Amanda often lacks taking accountability in negative situations. It’s not unreasonable to question the validity of her self-diagnosis because it could be yet another way she is trying to escape accountability for her words and actions.

She was actually correct, self diagnosis for autism is accepted by many in the autism community, by autism specialists, and autism researchers. There is also research to support self diagnosis to be fairly accurate in community samples. Diagnosing developmental disorders in adults is a complicated process and not always worth it if you are not seeking services. I'll spare you the details but the summary is self-diagnosis is acceptable in the vast majority of adult cases. Let's try to not jump to conclusions when something doesn't meet our expectations or experiences of the world. We miss so much information that way.

Additionally, by your own admission, self-diagnosis is not accepted by qualified medical professionals for ALL cases. Therefore it’s perfectly within reason to question the validity of her self diagnosis. We are living in an overly pathologised era. Psychological concepts are thrown around and being misused daily social media. It’s entirely plausible that Amanda is clinging on to this ‘self-diagnosis’ to be part of a vulnerable group (black women with autism) to escape taking accountability. Listen carefully to when she brings up her autism diagnosis. It’s mostly to garner sympathy (perpetual victim) or avoid taking accountability. For all I know, she may actually have autism but that isn’t the main reason she has the reputation she has. Avoidance of accountability in anything is. Both can be true at the same time.

That is for depression and anxiety. NOT Autism. If you ask me she has a presentation more closely associated with a personality disorder

Her depression and anxiety could be a result of misdiagnosis or not receiving the appropriate diagnosis of Autism. People on the spectrum are more likely to be diagnosed with depression and anxiety especially if not receiving appropriate treatment. Most adults are being diagnosed with autism after having children that have been diagnosed with autism. That’s the reality of not prioritizing your mental health and the stigma associated with seeking mental health services.

Instead of outlining what her treatment is for autism she used that to explain why people do not get along with her. Then deviated to a form a treatment that is not FDA approved for autism. There was nothing from that interview that aligned with autism other than repetitive organizing. What I did see was her real and perceived trauma and how that has impacted the way she interacts with others. Being different is not autism. You have to have some sort of impairment. But let her tell it she is not the problem.

If you watch the interview, Shannon asked her if she’s been clinically diagnosed and she responded, “Yes, there are clinical diagnosis” she knew what she was doing by answering that way. Developmental pediatricians, child psychiatrist, and child psychologist will probably be the most common specialties to diagnose autism because they have specialized training in developmental disorder. However, any masters or doctoral level medical or mental health provider can diagnose you through observation if they have some specialized training to recognize the condition. However, if you want the full range of services available or the most comprehensive diagnostic testing, you will generally need the gold standard ADOS assessment (among other assessments) from a specialized child psychologist.

I have ADHD (actually CLINICALLY diagnosed as an adult with it 😅), and so many people roll their eyes when they hear the term because a lot of folks are out here “self-diagnosing”, and it’s used so loosely these days. Amanda was selfish to come out and say she’s been diagnosed with autism at the top of Club Shay Shay (which seemed like an excuse rather than a reason for her behavior), then later brush off a clinical diagnosis like it’s not valuable enough to her. That whole “$10,000” comment was obnoxious imo. So many neurodivergent people are already misunderstood- and mocked in some cases, so we take our diagnosis seriously; especially because a licensed professional can tell you exactly where on the spectrum you fall; and offer you the proper tools to help you navigate your brain. I’m someone who actually LIKES Amanda Seales, but this has rubbed me the wrong way.

She basically did what a lot of people do when they go on WebMD for that "mystery lump or phlegm filled cough". Hell I've diagnosed myself with cancer on more than one occasion. And just like them (and me), she could be totally wrong. She could have a personality disorder or something else all together. That's why you go to a trained certified clinician. If she really wanted to know for certain if she was autistic than she would pay the $10,000 and go through the testing process. Seems like a no brainer to me. With the correct diagnosis she can get the resources and support she needs to cope. But running around lying about being diagnosed with autism for attention and sympathy is not cool at all. She losses a lot of credibility doing stuff like that.

A "Brilliant" and educated person would have identified that she resonated with the characteristics of autism that she read about, made a PRELIMINARY self-diagnosis and promptly followed that up with an ACTUAL clinical/official diagnosis by a LICENSED professional before running around and telling people, in a matter-of-fact tone, that she IS autistic. She could have even said "I feel strongly that I am on the spectrum". That statement tells us she is self-diagnosing but not confirmed. We can get behind that. Most health conditions start with us "feeling like something is off". She blatantly tried to mislead people by saying she is autistic by using evasive language when Shannon asked her "Is it diagnosed", then gets mad that people picked up on the evasiveness. She is not too brilliant otherwise she could have avoided this whole thing by being fully honest. She needs to get a grip. I do think she is an INFORMED person on black studies and has a powerful voice when talking about those topics but brilliant, in general, I think not. And, her comfortability with "lying by omission" explains why she had no problem with Jussie Smollett and considered him lying "Low key noble." I get it now.

What are they talking about? There are only two types of diagnoses, clinical diagnosis which deals with reported symptoms and laboratory diagnosis which deals with physical examination. Any doctor can make a "clinical diagnosis" including a psychiatrist or a psychologist.
