Hi, I'm a Malaysian and I grew up in Malaysia, studied in KL and worked a couple of years there too before flying halfway across the globe to London for postgrad studies. I'm really glad that you've had a positive experience living in Malaysia, and I do hope you will continue to feel this way. However, I have to disagree with you when you said that the cost of living is low in Malaysia. The reason is because the majority of Malaysians are not paid well, on the other hand, expats are generally paid a lot more. Majority of Malaysians get paid between rm2000-3500, and a fresh grad in KL would be lucky if he could get a job that pays rm2300, but it is just barely enough to get by. I'll explain a bit further, renting a small room in KL would be around RM500 (you could probably get rm250 in the dodgy areas of town), monthly car installments about RM500 (varies with car of choice and instalment plan), amount to spend on gas and tolls rm400 (it was rm600 for me cause my work required me to travel more), food, rm500 (it actually depends on how often you eat out, which for most of the working class people in malaysia would be at least a meal everyday), utilities rm200 (internet, phone, mobile, water, electricity, cable). If you add them all up, that would be rm2100 a month, which leaves you with rm200. I haven't included insurance premium, student loans or the amount to give back to our parents (more of a chinese tradition), cause not everyone has or could afford insurance and not everyone practices the tradition of repaying their parents. The figures are not absolute and are just estimations based on my experiences, but I do believe it won't be that far off for everyone else. But I do have to mention that it does depend on how you prioratize things and how you spend, I believe that there are people that can live within rm2300, but I can't imagine that it would be comfortably.

This is true. Malaysia is a wonderful multi-cultural place. A mixture of people, with many religious holidays and events to partake in, it's wonderful. There are so many beautiful things about the expat life, but at times it becomes easy to be negative and highly critical of the culture around you, especially when it isn't quite as developed as your home land. I hope that I will be far more optimistic and open my next time around experiencing expat culture. I look forward to more videos from you, girl!

I was born in Malaysia and lived there for 19 years before I moved into Japan for better job. You see, although the government itself are corrupted, it is not really that bad living in there unlike any communist countries (North Korea as example), citizen there had a very great life living in it (well, unless you lived in Kuala Lumpur which has higher crime rates than any other cities or states but the crime rate isn't that bad). People have so much freedom to do whatever they want. Although many people works in a job that pays a small amount of income, the economy is pretty good actually.

Having been born and bred there, IMHO for the locals, it is truly struggle street. Cost of living is astronomical if on a local salary and there is a huge variance between the haves and have nots. Of course if u earn USD, GBP or AUD and live in Malaysia it is fantastic and can have the luxuries of maids, a nice condo, shopping for imported food etc. Furthermore crime is spiralling out of control, local education is declining in standard, discrimination is rife, corruption has been normalised.

i think malaysia will have a lot of problem in future. the rice will revert to its number 1 comodity. palm oil is disliked these days. (bad for you) all the modern countries want to ban it. therefore rice will take its place, at one point palm oil was the black gold of the malaysian economy. whereas the real black gold oil and gas is to also be frowned upon after the cop50 carbon targets were set

I totally had the same experience with meeting people as an expat - as soon as I heard someone speaking English in a coffee shop I immediately felt the need to talk to them and become their friend. To be honest the idea of going to Malaysia has never crossed my mind (despite my always-present wonderlust!) but this video piqued my interest; thanks as always for sharing : )

Yes, warmer weather has a way of making things lovely. That said, sometimes I would do anything for some cold weather: sweaters, and snow and skating! LOL

Hi Amanda, I am a 19 year old french girl and my dad works for an oil company so i basically have been an expat for my whole life. I got to live in 5 different countries and have had so many opportunities, learnt a bunch of different languages, seen so many things, it's crazy. It is amazing to get the chance to be an expat and I can tell you, do NOT worry about Esme she will have the time of her life, I would not switch lives with anyone. Being an expat is DA BOMB

Love this video Amanda :) Malaysia is a great place! When I was a little one I would go to any restaurant and there would be games and photos taken (occasionally icecream) and I think that's one of the things that made my mum comfortable to move us here alone with 3 girls under 10! We appriciate the family lifestyle too :) even tho I'm a big girl now ;)

Love this. How amazing and so incredibly cool that you are living there and experiencing that walk of life. So cool. Im still hoping you do a DITL in the actual town like shopping or out and about. I think it would be so neat to actually see things going on. Thank you for sharing!

How cool! I'm totally jealous that you were strong enough to leave what's comfortable....I want to move so badly but can't imagine being so far away from home. Could you, or have you done a video about how your family handled your departure?

Not much of a barrier, most people speak English as a second language so it's fairly easy to get by.

Its lovely to know that you love Malaysia mostly because of the hot weather.most Malaysians will spend a lot just to live in colder regions.
