Amanda and Nick, If you haven't tried them yet, you may like Tanka Bars, Bites and Sticks. They are made with buffalo meat and cranberries made into a kind of pemmican (very historic food). They have slow smoked, spicy, and apple orange varieties. Tanka Bars are made by a Oglala Lakota-based company on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Good stuff for backpacking and camping! I like many of the items in your video. I don’t care for Kind bars as they have a medicinal taste. For really sweet snacks I like Luna bars because of the frosting, even though other guys sometimes look at me funny when I open one. I’ve also been known to bring smoked oysters or sardines and some saltines. You either like them or you don’t. Just don’t bring these backpacking in bear country.

I would love to see a video on zero waste snacks for a camping/hiking trip. You have a lot of power bars and granola bars. Which is important, because you have to eat. I challenge you to try zero waste on your snacks and make a video on it.

Here in my town we also have a small mom and pop that makes really good granola that I enjoy taking and of course you can't go wrong with jerky!

What a great video. Lots of wonderful ideas to try. 😊 I love The bobos bars ... so yummy!!! Lenny and Larry’s complete cookie ( be sure to try before you go on a hike as it contains chickory root which can give you gas! ) I eat a few of what you mentioned as well , kind bars, apples , pears , jerky and peanut butter crackers to even out the sweets. For electrolytes Liquid IV. It’s the ONLY thing that works consistently for me. Definitely going to try a few of these before I go on the AT next year. Thank you!!!!!

I am usually inclined to pack super sweet, highly palatable snacks and then when I'm a day into my trip, I'm regretting all the sugar and wishing for something salty. I'm definitely trying to dial in my snack variety! For that sugar/energy burst, I really like jelly beans. I can usually eat three or four and can push the rest of the way up a steep section. They keep well, easy to control portions (don't have to eat an entire bar, I can just have a small bunch). Mike and Ikes also work too. Just have to make sure my other snacks balance out the other macros, sufficient fat and protein! The most interesting snack I saw on the trail was someone who brought an entire bell pepper on the trail and ate it like an apple. I am going to try the Moon Cheese, thanks for the suggestion!

Not really a fan of bars I really struggle eating them so I tend to avoid them. My favorite snack is sliced apples with peanut butter. It satisfies both my constant craving for a sweet treat and my body’s need for salt and fat.

Love these snack ideas! I usually reach for Cliff Bars and they come in a variety of flavors, all of which I think taste good. Question for you...do you ever eat on hikes when you aren't hungry? I was hiking and burning a lot of calories this past weekend, but didn't get hungry. I felt run down though, so I ate to increase my energy. Have you had this happen before and if so, what do you suggest? Thanks!
@amanda.outside4 жыл бұрын
Great question. I'm not a nutrition expert, but speaking from personal experience here, I have noticed that on strenuous hikes I tend to be less hungry. I do try to eat (even if it's just a few bites of an energy bar) because I notice that if I don't, my energy levels start to suffer. Personally, I like Larabars (or just dates) for these moments because they're light and sweet and they really seem to give me a boost in energy. I usually can hike at a moderate pace for hours, so I really try to take breaks and actually stop and sit down. Usually once I stop and rest, I notice that I'm hungry and I can eat a substantial snack/lunch. I also try to start big hike days with a solid breakfast to energize me. If I have time to cook before a hike, I love to eat a few eggs and a bowl of oatmeal with honey and/or fruit! I'm not a dietician, but these are some things I've noticed have worked for me!

Have you found any more healthier, all organic, and low sugar bar options? I am not super fond of bars due to all of the added sugar and less quality of protein/products. or any vegan ones?
@amanda.outside4 жыл бұрын
These are the bars that I'm currently buying when I need a quick snack, but I also like to make homemade hiking snacks such as bars and energy bites, and that's a great way to have more control over the ingredients and sugar that goes into them!

So I did say I’d get back to you about ‘ no-food-foil-contact’ ideas, because aluminum is linked to breast/other cancers as well as Alzheimer’s. Foil is so versatile...found a way. Place the food item directly on a piece of brown paper bag, now wrap the foil around it, making a tent...works pretty good! Main thing, this barrier can help. After all, every little thing we do matters😋

That is tough to find! Some of the GoMacro bar flavors are tree nut and gluten free. I don't think they have oats either, but I'm not totally sure. They might be worth checking out.
