I love the tip of bringing a separate bottle for your electrolytes. Last month I packed an electrolyte sample that I hadn’t had before. Along the trail I poured it into my main bottle and it was AWFUL, and I was stuck with drinking that for the rest of my hike. Salty AF, unflavored and room temp water, it was horrendous. Learn from my mistake and pack a separate bottle😂

Yes that's such a good point! I've tried some really terrible electrolytes and you definitely don't want to be stuck with a gross one in your entire water reservoir!

Great video, but I would have added a mention of a few more key things explained here.... Attached below is a great article coming from a medical perspective. It explains what electrolytes are and why we need them. I feel this is very important to understand, and with that get a window into symptoms and to even go so far as to what to start the day off with, what types of food that help with cells getting proper nutrition, enzymes, things that allow in hydration, so say a banana for breakfast for potasium type of thing. Or bring one as a snack. This will help with other things like muscle cramping from strain. Great mention about how sugar and caffeine will dehdrate the body as they are diuretics that deplete cell hydration across the board. Sugar is complex and the good stuff the body needs is complex. Especially for those hyper or hypo glycemic and so many dint even know...which is sort of pre diabetes viral now in the US and because of heavily processed foods and everything else we consume. Anyway... It really does not have to be too complex in learning the importance of what (clean) food to eat in strenuous situations, what foods to avoid, the importance of water for how it actually works in the body, and how much how often, very, very key, especially why NOT to guzzle it down and flood the kidneys, and last the great aid supplements carry. Prevention and planning on a few levels most often avoids great disasters and tragedy in life's reality. Knowledge is certainly power And most of all is to experiment and get to know your body. Like in the video when she said she gets more of a boost from one certain mix which tastes more salty. There is the key. And... I just want to add dehydration happens allot more it is said with cold weather hiking, exercise or labor because we tend to drink less in the cold to begin with, yet still swet doing exercise or heavy labor type work regardless of the temperature. This has happened to me hiking in deep snow, dead of winter, bitter cold and it started with a headache, then a dizzy feeling and rapid heartbeat. My stomach immediately flipped. Luckily my guy, a Marine knew what it was as I was very scared. Now I carry electrolyte drops with me at all times made for hikers and they taste like salt water....I would imagine similar to Pedilite... and although they are not the best, I bring some flavored Tums, and why Tums or Roland's is because it's a quick chewable tab of Calcium and Magnesium I always bring with me anyway for acid reflux. These have gotten me out of a dehydration jam just at home when I started feeling really sick suddenly like I was going to faint. And another thing I travel with because I despise regular salt, white bleached iodized salt that is, I pack pink mineral salt for food mostly but, it's magick for dehydration as well. The last thing I learned is Magnesium works wonders on headaches. So when I start feeling the slight pressure of one, I take a good Magnesium supplement which is chelated for easier abortion and contains Magnesium glycine, which is more gentle on the stomach. And one last thing to consider...if it's hot and you find yourself drinking tons of water, a weird thing can happen which is you will pee out all the good stuff needed to feed your cells. This is very bad.... That is why water alone absolutely is not enough. See the last article for why... Here are two good articles to read to learn more.... ☆ Magnesium www.rupahealth.com/post/magnesium-101?gad_source=1 ☆ What are electrolytes www.prevention.com/fitness/a21085214/what-are-electrolytes/?gad_source=1 ☆ How and when to drink water www.webmd.com/diet/what-is-too-much-water-intake Hope this helps !

I learned on long hike that I don't get hungry in the first couple of days which means that if I'm drinking only water and little to no food I'm going to need electrolytes. Luckily I ran into a couple of friendly hikers that bailed me out.

Years I have been struggling with hydration and feeling like crap after / next day. I tend to just use Hydrolyte tablets when hiking or drink Powerade drinks when skiing. But I've noticed especially Powerade has as not much sodium in them ( I believe due to the taste ) so I have been short changing myself. For any other Aussies reading this, Himalayan Salt Tablets are easy to come by, so are the LMNT Recharge and the MTN OPS Electrolytes can be shipped from the MTN OPS US store to Australia. Thanks Amanda for pointing to the latter two, they really suit my my requirements and can't wait to see the results as the ski season has kicked off down under!

I use a product call liquid IV. Always helps me out. Especially when it's hot and humid. It comes in powder in individual pkts. Bad part is you can't use that bottle for anything else. Need to keep regular water for cooking etc separate. But not a huge problem just need to plan for it

Tip i learned is to add powders to your water after the fact. If you add the powder into your empty bottle beforehand it tends stick to the bottom and won't mix well

I live in a really hot and humid place! My tip for staying cool and having energy in really hot humid weather is to take a quarter teaspoon of Himalayan salt and just put it on your tongue and let your saliva dissolve it and then either drink a little bit of water or a little bit of Powerade Zero without any sugar. I also take a magnesium, a b complex, and potassium supplement before I go out hiking or walking in really hot humid weather. After doing all this I never get weary, and I seem to have energy that allows me to walk or to hike 4 hours it really helps. There are a lot of electrolyte products and electrolyte powders on the market but a lot of times I just read for Powerade Zero which has potassium magnesium and salt in it and no sugar so you don't get any insulin release that leads to a lot of glucose in your system.

Those electrolyte are practical but expensive. I buy Potassium citrate and Magnesium citrate in 500g packs. Then I make capsules with a simple device costing around €20. It's easy to prepare 100 capsules in 10 or 15 minutes, it's actually a relaxing and rewarding activity. One can do the same with ascorbic acid, table salt, taurine, citrulline, ecc. In the long run one saves a lot. Salt, which I don't use as an added ingredient when I am home cooking, it's easy to bring with you in the wild: just take food that is salty: salty peanuts, salty potato chips, ham, salame, cheese etc. Or you can bring kitchen salt with you. Don't spend extra for kitchen salt!

I use Nuun. I have used others that make me sick feeling. These work for me. The key is to use it when your body needs it. They they taste wonderful. If my body doesn't need it, they still taste good but by body doesn't such it down as fast because it doesn't need it. I also use these when I ADV ride when I sweat lots.

I've just been using Gatorade and it's made a difference compared to just drinking water on trail but I definitely want to give some of these options a try! I've seen quite a few people who use liquid IV but I haven't tried it. Often times I get fatigued while hiking and feel like I just don't have it in me and I think it's a sign that I need focus more on proper hydration and replenishing electrolytes. Thanks for the tips, Amanda. This video helps a lot! 😊

Plus, I usually just reuse Smart Water bottles for my filter to attach to so it doesn't really fit lol. I generally just stick with Gatorade packets. I've never heard of those others. I wish I could find them locally.

I tend to be careful about what a bottle has been used for in the past when I'm collecting my items for the bear bag at the end of the day when backpacking. So, if the most recent thing in the water bottle had been Gatorade (or I assume would be the same with these tablets), then that container goes in the bear bag at night. I'm even cautious when it was used for Gatorade/tablets and then even once or twice since has been emptied/refilled with plain water--I still feel like the scent is in there and would hate for that to be the thing that might attract a bear at night (if I neglected to put it in the bear bag). Any opinions or advice on this topic (e.g. how far back in the bottle's "history" should we consider the use of Gatorade and/or electrolyte tablets to have a lingering scent on the bottle to which it should go in the bear bag)?

Older folks need to be careful about the amount of sodium they consume in a day. Those salty ones with a gram of sodium per pack are a little much, especially for a shorter hike, or if you aren’t sweating excessively.

Hi Amanda, I came upon your videos and I find them very informative. For that I thank you very much. I am 255 lbs and I hike 4 1/2 miles in a little over 2 hours. I live in S.E Pa. I try to get out early before it it too hot. I sweet out a lot while hiking. I usually consume about one and half liters of water during the hike. I drink a bottle of gaterade after I finish to prevent cramping at night. After about 3 miles I find myself stopping often to rest. It is apparent that I should be taking electrolytes during my hike. Here is my question. Using nuun as a reference, how many tablets should I be taking during the hike. Anyy suggestions would be helpful.

Love the advices. I do have an question. Is it a good idea to eat the tablets/powder straight from the package into your mouth? I feel like it would save a lot of time and avoid the need of bringing a bottle. The flavor might be really strong without water, but sometimes I like a quick jolt of flavors overpowering my taste buds. It might wake my myself during a hike.

Loved the info, but I have to say this: what the heck was going on with the squirrel? It was like you were sitting in front of a green screen, and showing the woods behind you on a loop. I know that's not the case, but what was so weird was that the squirrel, (or chippy), would be running along, then just dissolve, then run again. I seriously think the forest was haunted!! I hope you gave him some SALTYAF, cuz he probably needed it after all that running. ;-)
