Thanks for the video! I am going to do my first overnight backpacking trip in February and have been slowly buying the gear I need for this winter weather. My sister recommended Oakley; they make sport/outdoor eyewear. I haven't tried them out yet so can't give you any real feedback. I do plan on giving them a try; thankfully they work with prescriptions as well.

@@lawrenberghanson4401 I have an old pair of Oakley wrap-around sunglasses (prescription), and they're great for outdoor activities. I was sad to find out that they can no longer update my prescription because that style is obsolete. For now, I'm just using them with the old prescription, but I might replace them with a new style at some point. They're pretty pricey with the prescription though.

Thanks,@@cherylharrison3518! Yeah, the price is why I haven't bought it yet, but I am the type of person that buys one thing and uses it until it disintegrates, so it may be worth it if it lasts long.😂 How long did you own your pair? Zenni Optical recently started a sports/activewear line. I currently have a Zenni frame, and I like it a lot for my everyday seeing glasses; I may have to check that out. So @amandaoutside Zenni might be a good option and it won't take a huge bite out of your wallet.

A good way to get warm if you're sitting is to light a candle between your legs and cover your shoulders with a blanket or emergency blanket. Wrap it around you - don't light it on fire! - and let it trap the heat from the candle. Then you don't have to start an entire fire to get the benefits from a small one for a single purpose. Agree that hot food/drinks is a great idea!

I live in a hot climate, so even in winter it's usually never colder than about 12 C (54 F) but it is fun for me to imagine a real winter! Your area is so beautiful.

Always smart to keep a few hand warmers as emergency. I climbed Mt.Hood and a older gentleman was in a rush to get back to the car lot. Apparently, his toes were numb and forgot his warmers. I gave him my emergency warmers. I’ve never seen someone take a boot off so fast in 5degree weather.

Roll vaseline in cotton balls. Rub in good and keep as separate balls. Store in a ziplock. Many use this method and it's my favorite for getting tinder burning. A spark or two and the individual ball will burn more than long enough to get even thicker tinder burning.

New to your channel and I'm intrigued. I guess I'll have to watch more and perhaps subscribe! I looked through the responses for recommended sunglasses and I didn't see the ones I use. They're a bit non-traditional for hiking, but I wear Carhartt sunglasses. Not very expensive (I think around $30), and they're not only solar protecting, but also safety glasses (hey, you never know...). Also, what I like about them is they come with a strap that can replace the removal stems if want them to stay on no matter what. Nice video - thanks!

Hey Amanda, I ski all the time with a Camelback with an insulated hose like yours. When it’s really cold I blow air into the hose to clear the water after I drink. It prevents freezing especially in the bite valve.

Minus33 vase layer gloves are the best I’ve found, couple them with mitt shells, game changer. Also, Bergeon base layers work so well, holds heat, sheds sweat, highly recommend these!

Thanks for sharing your gear! I camped last winter in freezing temperatures. I have a good bag but nothing would keep my feet warm. My toes were so cold I thought I had frostbite! I quickly went out on my return home and purchased toe warmers in the brand you showed and stowed them with my gear. Never again will I have cold feet when winter camping!

an electric hand warmer - great for climbing or other activities in cold weather where you may not be doing a lot of consistent cardio. Zippo makes one that I love. And hot tea/beverage all the way.. huge difference. Snow baskets for trekking poles.

I would recommend Goodr sunglasses. They are perfect for running, hiking, essentially any outdoor stuff. They aren’t very expensive, they are polarized and they don’t slip (which is great for sports)!

Thanks for the great video! I've seen a few people recommend Goodr sunglasses, and I would agree - they fit well, don't slip at all, they look stylish, and they're cheap so I don't feel like I need to be so precious/protective about them like I would a more expensive pair. The only times I've had trouble with them fogging was if I wore a particularly tight neck gaiter or mask over my nose and kind of blocked bottom air flow.

You asked about sunglasses… I love my Knockaround. They were only $30 look great and have been perfect for my outdoor activities. Totally agred about your love of winter hiking. So different than summer. Much slower and can’t go as far but damn is it beautiful and the lack of crowds is awesome. Just did a couple short hikes around Mammoth this past weekend and am still glowing 😍

I second Knockarounds. Especially the sport grip ones. My grip pair are a must when sweating for sure but I love both pairs I have. They're lightweight, inexpensive and just plain fun. I've also tried Goodr, but Knockarounds are more durable IMO.

My go to sunglasses for outdoor activities are Oakley flak jackets with polarized lenses or if I'm really going to be out in bright direct full sun all day (on the water or out in the snow on a sunny day), I'll go for my Costa Del Mar Reeftons. I think they might be a bit big for you (I've got a big head lol).

Love Bryce Canyon in the winter! It's so beautiful! I love my Sunski Headlands sunglasses. They stay on really well with any activity I do, and they have a good guarantee (which I've had to use). You can also exchange out the lenses if they get scratched. I just had my first snowshoeing overnight trip in my Oboz Bridger boots, can confirm they're awesome! What are the red glove liners you were wearing in this? That's one thing I need to get.

I have Oboz boots in a different style and I love them; agree on not needing break-in. Winter where I live is usually highs in the mid-40s (cold snaps in the 20s sometimes) so I absolutely love it, so much better than hot humid mostquito-infested summer. Not sure I'd feel the same if I lived somewhere that was truly cold.
