There is much uncertainty about the second phase of the ceasefire in Gaza. After nearly 16 months of war, the humanitarian situation there remains dire. Author and journalist Peter Beinart believes equality between the Israelis and Palestinians is the only way to secure peace and safety for good. It's something he addresses in his new book "Being Jewish After the Destruction of Gaza." The author joins the show to discuss.

That is so delusional and out of touch with reality. Hamas is an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood. For them, it’s not about “resistance” even though that’s the words they use to be more palatable to western ears. Hamas is more Isis/Al Qaeda/ Taliban/IRGC in Iran than it is an organisation interested in a Palestinian state. This is about an Islamic Caliphate and eradication of anyone standing between them and this goal. There’s a reason this is a prescribed terror group in most western countries, it’s not about politics, it’s about having real intelligence and insight into who and what this organisation is really about. You can believe that all people should have equal rights, as one should, and at the same time call a spade a spade. Hamas is not a group of freedom fighters, and it never has been. Also, while this war in Gaza should have stopped months ago, if not over a year ago, Hamas and the like are in fact a danger to all around them, Palestinians and Israelis alike, and should have been made a non power. A task at which Israel seems to have failed. Going back to the original point - October 7th happened due to a normalisation between Israel and Saudi Arabia, and was always intended to become a media war - that is the reason Hamas “poked the bear” as hard as it could. This is not about occupation and freedom or human rights, Hamas wanted Israel to react forcefully to create as much damage to the Palestinian civilian population and to use that to garner sympathy in the media and world public opinion. Simpler minds and often good intentioned people unfortunately fell for this, not realising that Hamas was knowingly sacrificing its own population for reasons that have have nothing to do with the occupation (which by the way, Gaza was not since the mid 2000’s). You are oversimplifying this issue with no real understanding of what is actually going on. This is what Hamas counted on, and it worked out pretty well for them.

My cousin, now teaches at SIU and is a professional along with his friend, who heads one of the department’s a the Cleveland clinic where dragged out of a home for no reason. Beaten and taken to the Maskubia. We were 14/15. Another time a store owner hid me after being chased by a soldier on foot for throwing stones. I hid in a crate, few minutes later I could hear vehicles and soldiers searching for me. If not for the owner I would have spent 20 years in their prison. They took 2 other boys because they didn’t really care so long as they inflicted fear on people.

@@freeforest Your comment reminds me of a photo. In it there was a blond haired Ukrainian girl defiantly yelling at a Russian soldier. It spread as a sign of Ukrainian brave resistance. Turns out that blond haired Ukrainian girl was actually a blond haired Palestinian girl and the Russian soldier was actually an IDF soldier. It was taken long before the Gaza war or Oct 7th. And so that IDF soldier had no right to be on Palestinian territory like Gaza and the West Bank, and the Palestinian girl was expressing her frustration at this injustice. Those people that cheered when they thought it was a Ukrainian girl, stopped sharing the image when they found out the truth. That's despite the fact that the message of the story did not change, of a kid defying an occupying military force. The only thing changed was the girl was Palestinian, not Ukrainian... How much empathy do you lack to say that a kid who threw rocks against an occupying military force has committed a crime and deserves to be dragged out of their home and beaten?

While Mr. Beinart makes great points about the horrible treatment inflicted on the Palestinians and understands the reasons for the resistance until reverts to the inbred ideology prevalent amongst Israelis that Islam is a supremacist ideology, therefore justifying Israel’s supremacist behavior. He conveniently forgets to mention that Hizbollah and Hamas came into existence because of the occupation of Lebanon and Palestine. Israel is nothing more than a colonialist settler military outpost of Western powers disguised as a state, the pathetic Palestinian Authority in the Westbank resembles the Indigenous Americans who surrendered to an overwhelming force while Hamas who is fighting back against the occupation, resembles the Viet Cong. We African Americans have suffered trauma over many centuries. We didn't build an apartheid state and deny White Americans rights. We are all shaped by history, but if you use what happened to your Grandfather or further back to justify a genocide, I can't empathize with that. Israelis haven't suffered for many centuries, the state of Israel is still less than a century old and most Israelis aren't even as old as the state of Israel. They need to stop hiding behind their ancestor's suffering and trauma, of which they did not experience themselves.

On a documentary about George Marshall I heard something interesting. The U.S. recognition of Israel as a state was being considered by President Truman. Truman was pressured by politicans to recognize Israel. George Marshall said population densities of Hebrews and Muslims was such that not coming up with a plan that was more fair would lead to ongoing conflicts. Truman recognized the Israeli state. George Marshall was an outstanding general, statesman, and humanitarian. Not many U.S. politicians with the Nobel Peace Prize.

In 71 I saw a 5 year old Palestinian boy shining the boots of an 18 year old Israeli soldier in Gaza. Their sons’ experience was worse, and their grandsons have accepted the reality created by the 55 year occupation. Each side can justify their views and actions.
