While discussing headlines:
Jayashree: Does your fandom of Akshay Kumar extend to you watching his movies?
Rajyasree: No, that’s too much. I just think he’s a very good-looking man.
Jayashree: I think the last Akshay Kumar movie I watched was Garam Masala, 20 years ago.
Rajyasree: I have nothing to say to that.
This and a whole lot of awful and awesome as Rajyasree Sen and Jayashree Arunachalam discuss the films Amar Singh Chamkila and Aattam, and the series Baby Reindeer.

"The ladies feel Diljit didn't do a good job as Chamkila"... "The subtitles were not good" "they don't explain why he sings the songs he did"... - wow, looks like these ladies and the rest of the world were watching two different films. Anyway, now I know why they say art is subjective!

It’s time they tip their hats and offer up a proper apology. They've tromped through the magnolia bushes and made a right mess of things. Are these two kin to the company's promoters? ‘Cause that's the only way they oughta have a job 'round here.

If Jayashree could stop making the tsk tsk sound that after every word, it would be more pleasant for the listener. I thought it was pretty obvious in the move why Chamkila cut his hair - he was inspired by Amitabh and his guru Shinda. Also it was explained pretty well why he wrote those songs - as is true for most artists -they do what sells.

1) his poverty is linked to his caste. The entire movie does a brilliant job in pointing that out. Yes it’s subtle and perhaps for more mature viewers but still brilliantly laced throughout the movie. 2) the ‘vulgarity’ is in fact an entire commentary on the politics of sexuality and how it subverts such a patriarchal casteist society. What does it mean for a Dalit to sing things that the upper caste listens to in all their spaces and yet threatens and rages against? What does it mean for the women to perform these songs in their safe women only spaces? What is our idea of vulgar and non-vulgar when we think folk cultures are vulgar but Shiela ki Jawani is not? How do we grade this vulgarity based on our own class and caste politics? And who decides what language is vulgar? Such caste and class normative issues were central to the movie. Wish you brought people who actually had a more nuanced approach to the movie.

I do not blame you people about your thaughts on Chamkila. You do not know the rural culture of Punjab. Chamkila is still in the hearts of punjabi people. His records are still hit. Diljit and Pariniti did an excillent job and will always be remembered and praised for it❤. I watched this show first time only for the Chamkila review and was so disappointed. Anyways it was your personal opinion but punjabi people loved it.

These snobbish, self-important reviews do not matter. Not because they are critical but because they are more about the people giving them proving how clever they are, than understanding why certain things, even though not intellectual, touch people on a larger scale. It is not about a vulgar singer or caste politics, it is ultimately about freedom of expression. Will you support the freedom of expression of people you don't like? It's hypocritical when English speaking elite who scream on Twitter defending this right, do not get it. Diljit Dosanjh will remain in people's hearts for this performance.

Judging Chamikla by someone who doesn’t even know Hindi is not correct. I think Mr. Shekri should have done that. Diljit’s performance would have touched every Punjabi soul. It’s completely unfair what you said about him. I do understand you not from Punjab so you shouldn’t be judging that movie. The movie is all about the lyrics and culture of Punjab and you have zero knowledge of it. I’m so you have hurt us by saying that. It is fantastic movie the direction and acting is awesome. Things I wasn’t aware I got to know through this movie. Love you guys otherwise.

Of-course, this is the review from a bona fide snob sneering at Diljit's performance. Saw this hideous review from a mile away despite the fact that most view this movie as Imtiaz's comeback thanks to Diljit's portrayal of Chamkila. This show is so redundant, the reviews are always so underwhelming. Abhinandan's rare appearances is the only salvageable thing about it, tbh😅

Chamkila is an awesome movie, especially if you understand Punjabi.. Most people would still like it if they understand Hindi. I’m not sure how good the English subtitles are for someone to judge the movie based on that. For example, she says that it was a very surface level movie because they didn’t explain why he sings such songs. But the movie begins with him as a child listening to and watching all this stuff around him. He said multiple times in the movie that he grew up with all this around him, people want to listen to this kind of music, and that’s why he sings it..

When you have ZERO idea about cultural nuances, when even the translation you got was from some other planet THIS is what you get for Chamkila review. You missed critical things about the reason for this person (Chamkila) singing what he did...something he talks about all the time in the movie, that it began from his childhood etc! This is a biopic, because if there is no reason given in the life of chamkila about why he cut his hair then Imtiaz Ali cannot magically supply it in the movie. That will be dishonest. I would suggest 1984 Punjab, if you want to see Diljit’s performance at his best. And that’s why people at that time could look emotionless at times. As far as bland look is concerned, if you look at their actual performances, Amarjot looks very disinterested, just like Parineeti did. I disagree with your discussion of Amar Singh Chamkila movie. I would never defend his songs. But they connected the dots that he was Listening in traditional folk songs and seeing these things as a child. But I think most of it got lost for her in translation.

I agree with your review on Chamkila to some extent but not all. I felt like the movie makers have played safe and only taking the things that could support the character. As a biography I wanted to be inspired or at least moved emotionally but the movie didn't do that to me. It was a good movie technically but it isn't something to become a cult. One suggestion to the girl on the left is that she should tone done her lips smacking ppchh ppchh sound in between her conversations... it's annoying and audience wouldn't like that.

I think it really isnt a stretch when people refer to Chamkila as the 'Elvis of Punjab' because they both ruffled feathers with the conservatives for their 'vulgarity' which inevitably made them more popular. Also, the 'vulgarity' in question has been addressed in the movie pretty well I think. Im not justifying it but we cant deny that there has always been a audience for it and we aren't anyone to judge them. Moreover it was nothing that Chamkila invented cus it has always existed and has been the reason of popularity for many mainstream International popstars both before and after him. I would agree that the performances are just ok at best except when Diljeet is singing and the movie does feel surface level at many places but that I guess is a compromise which the makers had to make cus of the medium, perhaps a mini series would have opened up more possibilities. Overall, the movie is a good watch and will definitely encourage the audience to enquire more about the life of Chamkila.

The entire outrage brigade in the comments are standing up for a mediocre performance and saying that the viewers can't gauge a performance because something was lost in translation or the viewer failed to comprehend the performance because of lack of language skills. Movie watchers also watch Japanese, Korean, French, Malayalam, Telegu, Iranian and German films with subtitles and are able to appreciate good cinema and performances. Imtiaz Ali, quite simply, is an overrated writer and director. Apart from his initial work, most of his follow up writing and films have been mediocre and passable fare. He has a hit and miss record. And an actor is only as good as the screenplay and the director extracting said performance. Diljit is a skillful actor as illustrated in 1984 Punjab but can't be Daniel Day Lewis when the writing itself is formulaic Bollywood biopic writing catering to Netflix's requirement of dumbing down writing for greater accessibility. All critique should be taken in. If the film has failed to be accessible to viewers unfamiliar with Punjab, its history or with Chamkila, then that is a failing of the film to transcend these barriers.

Well not really! Most of the “outrage brigade” is annoyed by the “critics” snobbish commentary.. the whole assumption that people watching that particular movie are beneath the critics’ level is a bit too much show of privilege and fake intellectual classism.. I agree to the point that Imtiaz Ali might not just be the best in the lot.. and this film might not be best of the lot either.. but here the problem was the way the presenters, presented the whole material.. it was disrespectful.. and “junta” might not be fancy, supremely “sophisticated” or most proficient in “english”, BUT they are not stupid! Not everyone in the comment section is a “troll” but definitely most of them are annoyed ✌️
