Disaronno is still an Amaretto, just not typical. "Depending on the brand, it may be made from apricot kernels, bitter almonds, peach stones, or almonds, all of which are natural sources of the benzaldehyde that provides the almond-like flavour of the liqueur."

How is Lazzaroni the newest? It's been around since the mid 1800's. It is hard to find nowadays. It used to be readily available. Of those listed, it is my favorite. Amaretto does not have to be thick sweet syrupy stuff although all of those you guys tested are. A new kid on the block called Opera White Amaretto is not at all like any of these. Produced by "Liquorificio Beltion", it is much lighter. It has a distinct almond taste and it not overwhelmingly sweet as the ones tested here are (until mixed with something else). It's very different. I found it in Connecticut and have not been able to find it anywhere else.-which is a shame. I hope that the difficulty getting it is attributable to it being new and could change if there is more of a call for it. So please call for it!

Di saronno is an "amaretto" just because it is not made with almonds does not mean it is not. It is the original. It was always made from apricot pits. The name amaretto comes from the flavor being nutty.
@lyndel939 жыл бұрын
amaretto actually mean "little bitter" in Italian. like the almond nut being slightly bitter.
@cmcocktails9 жыл бұрын
+lyndel biggs Di Saronno does not market itself as an Amaretto and has not for the last 15 years. If you find an old bottle you'll probably see "Amaretto" on the label, prominently. However, Di Saronno contains _no nuts_ or almonds, which may be why they're marketing team changed it up. It does contain Apricot Kernel oil, but that doesn't count as a nut nor an almond. If you ask Di Saronno if they make an amaretto they'll tell you no. So, with that, original or not, it's not an amaretto (this is coming from the company itself). Their website also reflects this, "The decision was made to identify it from other competitor amaretto liqueurs, allowing it to become the one and only, the authentic DISARONNO." Because of the size of our audience and the fact that I go out of my way to explain "how it is" rather than "what I think", I have started to refrain from directly calling Di Saronno an amaretto. Years ago, I wouldn't care less, but given our growing audience, I like to present things the way they are rather than the way I feel (unless I start the conversation as "I feel..." then I will adlib as I go :)
@lyndel939 жыл бұрын
Well explained. Thank you for taking the time. The fact that they do not market as amaretto, it is simply a marketing stunt to distinguish themselves from other competitors. Also, I think it needs to be made clear that amaretto is not the same as almond liquor.

Just tried the Lazzaroni. The review is spot on. Lazzaroni is chemically tasting. My first smell and drink had a cherry cough syrup taste with a bit of black licorice. It also has a cherry cough syrup aftertaste. I am not liking it at all. At $23 for 750ml I wish I would have stuck with the Disaronno. To me Lazzaroni does not have the taste or smell of Amaretto. To be honest, my $8 750ml bottle of Romeo Amaretto (the cheap crap) was much better than the Lazzaroni. I have not tried the Luxardo yet as I have not been able to find it in my area.

Yeah, the problem I've had is much the same, I bought like 4 different brands at our last party with my buddy Dan and his wife, and the girls sniff'd out all the non-Disaronno when we started using different ones in the cocktails. So, we called their bluff and gave them 4 different drinks and they told us which was Disaronno every time we tried to sneak it in.

Okay which brand of amaretto is actually made from almonds and not peaches or some other nonsense? As well as drinking I would like to use it in baking almond cookies and scones and I would like to use a real almond amaretto. I have disaronno at home and I will use it but it's to my knowledge not almond based. My location if that matters is Central Florida.
@cmcocktails5 жыл бұрын
Sorry, knowing where you are in the world doesn't help unless i too lived there, else I have no idea lol. I pick amaretto based on what flavor everyone enjoys and that's always been Disaronno. They all use products that produce the same flavor sensation as almonds (and do it so it's not dangerous and create poison). So... I can't tell you which has "almonds" in it, I can only tell you which people love. To me, that's all that matters.
@francisd238610 жыл бұрын

@Fogmaster199010 жыл бұрын
Why is Disaronno not considered an "amaretto" anymore?
@cmcocktails10 жыл бұрын
A few reasons I believe, first, they wanted to "brand" it stronger. It's like the difference between "soda" and "coke." Both are soda...but only one is coke :) Secondly, it contains no almonds or nuts. Most amaretto "almond liqueurs" contain ....some type of nut or almond.
@Fogmaster199010 жыл бұрын
***** You also mention that it is not considered an amaretto anymore. Meaning at first it was once considered to be an amaretto? Is the competition making drinkers/tasters more aware of what a REAL amaretto tastes like.
@cmcocktails10 жыл бұрын
Carlos Mena there is a debate on if a real amaretto can be made without almonds. But, it used to be "Amaretto di Saronno Originale" and was rebranded "Disaronno Originale" removing Amaretto from the name all together.
@Fogmaster199010 жыл бұрын
It almost reminds me of the whole Jose Cuervo not being real tequila because its not made from 100% de agave. Interesting subject!
@cmcocktails10 жыл бұрын
Carlos Mena true, the only real big difference is I don't think there is a legal rule to naming it amaretto like there is for tequila. Cuervo gold just takes the legal limit and finds the bottom of it so they can still call it "tequila." That and it's a core spirit over a liqueur (which is usually just a blend of flavors not a core distilled product). But yes, same debate.

@cmcocktails7 жыл бұрын
easiest way to get into it is to build whiskey cocktails, the classics are going to definitely be more spirit forward than others, I'd start with a whiskey sour since it's going to be like many other sours and have plenty of citrus to distract from the pure bourbon and help dilute it down a bit. For instance, here are the drinks I'd start with...I get this question a lot so I've already got a video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZqzdItmhpqVlbM

nice. I wasn't sure radio was still something people wanted to do anymore, you do any podcasting?

Nice Derek. I have a bunch of amarettos I need to do a comparison video on. Don't know if I can get Lazzaroni. Great view count on 6 yr old vid.

@@cmcocktails. So, I did it without the Lazzaroni. I figured if I have to go out of my way to get it, people are not likely to either. I don't want to insert a link 'cause I think you're subscribed to me anyways.

you don't have to enjoy a cocktail, you just have to watch a video. Two separate things.

You seem confused (maybe your completely annoying add) about what a tasting is. First, it's not a guessing... Seriously, you guys don't come across as any type of authority on almond liqueurs. Just goofing off in front of a camera.

And that you would have such contempt for feedback from a customer says a lot: no reflection, just reject any voice you don't want to hear. Growth comes from falling short, even to me, someone you obviously don't want to hear.
@cmcocktails3 жыл бұрын
Nah, I've taken valuable feedback many times over the last twelve years on youtube. Yours just isn't constructive. If you want to learn to give constructive feedback, re-word your sentences to be less....dickish? I'm not trying to come across as an authority on almond liqueurs, that's never the intention. It's my channel with my content, been doing it awhile, your feedback isn't necessary nor requested as you're commenting on a video that is six years old, there is nothing you can tell me in this video that I can "fix" to fit your desire. Plenty of folks use our content to make buying decisions or just for entertainment; you don't have to be one of them, I'm not begging you to like our content, if you don't like it, just move on. Your feeling share isn't needed. But yeah, if you leave a comment, I have two modes: keep it or delete it. You're comment just wasn't dickish enough to immediately delete.
@brokenrecord35233 жыл бұрын
@@cmcocktails I apologize. I was being dickish. Perhaps you would have taken my criticism more constructively if I had been more professional in the delivery. Perhaps not. In any case, I sincerely regret adding to the pathetic level of social interaction found on KZbin.
