Part 12 of Hamilton was a work of art! Last video I said “so much happened in this song it’s quite astounding” & then LMM was like "ahahahahaha watch this 😎". To be clear, I’m aware of the happenings of the French Revolution (see my extensive references to Napoleon in the video) - my commentary is about the musical though & stems from 7:39 where GW says "France is on the verge of war with England" & my thoughts on supporting them or not on that specific issue. Also if I see any X Men slander in these comments you better grab a friend, that’s your second, because there’s a reckoning that will be reckoned!!! 😾 Anyway I spend the entire outro talking about how this has been a life changing experience for me so make sure to stick around for that! 😤 Anyway just like with the previous videos, KZbin was shooting me like Aaron Burr over the music AND the visuals so I had to make some cuts to the songs & cover it with text (this was the least intrusive editing method I could find that they’d accept). I posted the entire intact reaction (full songs, no text covering the visuals etc.) on my patreon here www.patreon.com/posts/116989072 if you’re interested, but if not I’d suggest pulling up the soundtrack & playing it own your own so you can hear the INSANITY of what I’m hearing in full lol. PLEASE DO NOT SPOIL MAJOR PLOT POINTS IN YOUR COMMENTS (or at least start your comment with "spoilers" so I know to avoid it)! It takes away the point of future reactions if you just tell me everything that happens later so instead let me experience it during the process of watching Hamilton myself. I have moderators who are scanning the comments & deleting spoilery comments so don’t leave spoilers cause it will just get removed anyways. Lastly if you see others leaving comments that include spoilers please reply to it indicating that it has spoilers so I know not to read it, thank you in advance. Anyways make sure to check out the other parts here kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4mQnIyfe6p4rLs & subscribe not to miss future parts! 🦁❤💛

Emperor’s New Clothes is a folktale about an emperor who is obsessed with new fancy clothes (while not paying much attention to actually ruling). Two con men pose as weavers and tell him that they can make him clothes that are invisible to people who are incompetent/stupid. No one wants to appear incompetent or stupid, so all of his advisors and the emperor pretend to see the clothes. They “dress” him and he goes walking around the city. Everyone pretends that they can see the clothes until a child yells out that the emperor isn’t wearing clothes.

Children are fearless, conmen are terrifying, narcissists are moronic and sycophants are cowards. So much packed into a short story, Disney should’ve turned this into a movie. What I love most about Washington’s two big numbers (Right Hand Man and One Last Time) is that he ends both of them replicating a pose from famous paintings of George Washington. It’s such a small subtle touch that is easy to miss but it’s awesome.

Having Jefferson talk about Hamilton’s fashion while dressing as a purple pimp is meant to show Jefferson’s hypocrisy. Like slave owning champion of freedom. Jefferson in reality spouted a lot of high minded ideals but was actually quite pragmatic and willing to abandon his ideals for the right opportunities. The Louisiana Purchase, his greatest achievement as President went against his limited government mantra and ironically was only made possible by Hamilton’s economic policy which gave the federal government the credit necessary to pull it off. I’m glad that Hamilton was still alive when it went down and he was able to roast Jefferson in the press. That nugget does not get covered in this play.

Stepping back from authority is such a brilliantly enlightened move, and it applies not just to leading a nation, but to parents and teachers, too. It's so critical to step back and just let people make mistakes after you've taught them. Constantly correcting and taking care of them risks developing complete reliance. It kind of makes ambitious people feel so young, doesn't it?

Washington was still really popular but the bloom was coming off the rose. In addition to his age and health he was facing more and more open disagreement, and he was not accustomed to that. He was very prideful and viewed himself as serving at everyone's behest, he did not take naked criticism well. Hamilton was basically his fall guy, anyone who disagreed with him couldn't attack his character so they implied he was old and senile and that Hamilton was the real president and attacked him. G. Wash knew and historians tend to agree he would have had a rocky third term. This preserved his legacy in more ways than one.
@amykat42653 сағат бұрын
It's hard to choose a favorite song in this musical, and I wouldn't say One Last Time is my favorite, but it does have some of the greatest emotional impact on me. It really puts a great deal of feeling into the concept of why Washington stepped down when he did, and what a huge impact it had. It created an expectation and a political norm that no president would serve more than two terms - right up until FDR served four, and after that, as popular as he was, they made a constitutional amendment to formalize the two-term custom. It was THAT important a precedent that Washington set, and America as a democratic nation may not have lasted the way it did if Washington hadn't made that choice. He was not a perfect person, but this song really shows how impactful he was as our first president. The inclusion of the actual words from his farewell address are so important, especially since Hamilton was his speech writer. Also Chris Jackson can BELT like nobody's business and he held nothing back in this song! (Fun fact, Chris Jackson was the singing voice of Moana's father in the movie Moana. Temuera Morrison was the speaking voice, but Chris Jackson brought his musical skills.)

Okay, I completely understand the point about America being "disloyal" to France at this time, but Hamilton has a great point. The treaty they signed (and the government they therefore swore to support) was with the King of France. That king had been executed by many of the same people who fought alongside the Americans. So their loyalties are completely divided. Are they meant to honor their treaty and fight for the French aristocracy, or are they meant to break their treaty and fight for the people of France? It wasn’t a simple question of supporting their friends, because they had friends on both sides.
@myst0dreamer36 минут бұрын
You are right, and I was going to point this out too. Lafayette was an Aristocrat who believed in democracy, but the French revolution was not the most democratic of revolutions. It was a brutal civil war that turned into a violent suppression of opposition. It depends a little on exactly when this discussion was taking place. And the question wasn't, what side is the US going to take in France's internal problems, but are they going to support the country of France against the country of Great Britain? If this is the beginning of the Napoleon's Wars, then what we are asking is, will we support a nominally anti-monarchic regime led by a guy with imperialistic and monarchic tendencies himself, or the traditional monarchies of Europe? It's a lot easier to make this decision based on hindsight. In addition, the US has always had a tendency to isolationism, and the argument between the two sides, Jefferson and Hamilton, is an early indicator of that. A number of Amari's generalizations about the US intervening in other countries' affairs simply were not yet true. This is something that really only came about in the 20th century. Lafayette didn't help us because he had ideals and wanted to help his friends, there were other strategic motivations. And helping France isn't about helping their friend, Lafayette. Everyone had other motivations. Foreign relations isn't personal, it's about power. Sorry to say. The US was still a weak nation, and it's possible that getting into a another war against Great Britain could lead to Great Britain re-acquiring the US as colonies.

Yeah, the French helping the American revolution was a matter of "the enemy of my enemy" but the US getting involved in the French revolution is much less clear. "They helped us" doesn't work well when "they" are fighting themselves. Sure, the royalty weren't the ones in the trenches, but they were the ones funding the guns and ships. So which side is the ally you come to the aid of? I can see an argument that says "We'll go with Lafayette. Oh, he's sitting this one out? Works for us."

🦁- Ah, hearing math terms referenced in song reminds me of my old favorite, “Standard Deviation” by Danny Schmidt. Washington stepping down and leaving the Presidency is how you win Tony’s. It’s one of my favorite scenes. Saying, “Whatever it is, Jefferson started it,” and then, “Whatever you say sir, Jefferson will pay for his behavior,” is one of favorite lines. But, Hamilton writing Washington’s resignation speech and slowly transitioning to Washington delivering the speech is amazing! And seeing C.Jackson conversing with B.Obama at the White House event has me pondering if Barrack was taking notes towards his future speech.

On the topic of “the emperor has no clothes”: it’s an old story about an extremely greedy emperor who essentially gets his ego played on by a scammer who comes in and sells him clothes that are supposedly the highest quality. The emperor doesn’t want to admit that he can’t see the fabric or the clothes created, so he wears the “clothes” (they don’t exist, he’s been scammed and doesn’t want to admit to it) in a parade and no one says anything about it until a child not afraid of speaking out shouts, “The emperor has no clothes!” In this context it’s Jefferson threatening to “expose” Hamilton. Loving your reactions btw!

Two things that I don't think I've seen in the comments here yet that I think are interesting/cool: 1. When I read the biography this musical was based on, I found out that the scripture quoted in "One Last Time" was actually Washington's favorite bible verse, and was frequently used in his writings. 2. Christopher Jackson once said in an interview (paraphrasing) that his mom used to tell him he could be the first black president when he was a kid. In his mind, bc he was a black man that got to play the very first president, SHE WAS RIGHT 😭

For the record, Sydney James Harcourt played Philip Schuyler, James Reynolds, a character you haven't seen yet, and was an understudy for Aaron Burr, Thomas Jefferson/Marquis de Lafayette, and George Washington. Hamilton believed France only got involved in our Revolution to stick it to England. That's one reason for his argument. Another reason is America had no Navy, no Army to speak of, not a lot of money, and were still trying to get our own act together. What would we have helped them with? If we had helped France we could have come under British rule all over again. Hamilton did write the majority of Washington's Farewell Address. It was based on an earlier draft written by James Madison before Washington decided to run for a second term. I liked how it started out with Hamilton saying the words with Washington joining in and then Washington alone, so Hamilton wrote the draft, they both worked on it, and it became Washington's words alone.

"The Emperor's New Clothes" by Hans Christian Anderson is a fairy tale in which a vain emperor cares only for the clothing he wears. The Emperor gets taken advantage of when two weavers tell him that they can create a fabric that will reveal anyone unfit or too stupid for their role.
@vampdan5 сағат бұрын
The Emperor's New Clothes (short-short version): Emperor surrounded by sycophants who only fuel his delusions gets sold the most magnificent outfit. The new clothes are only in his mind; and it isn't until he is in the midst of a crowd NOT enamored by his power that he is made to realize: he is in-fact naked. His clothes are invisible (which is why Jefferson's line "We won't be invisible" is so good). . For "One Last Time" they actually use the words of Washington's farewell address in the song. I had read his address previous to seeing the musical, and as they go into it I immediately started tearing up (and do every time I hear it). There is another leader in history did the same thing: Tokugawa Ieyasu. After he ruled as Shogun he retired so his son could take over so he got to be the power behind his son's throne to ensure stability. His dynasty, and Japan's isolation, lasted more than 200 years (until Commodore Perry's ironclads sailed into Tokyo Bay).

Hamilton's lack of loyalty to Lafayette put me in mind of his lack of loyalty to Eliza in this video for the first time ever. I think because watching you watch his infidelity hit differently. For me, it was just oh he cheated; men cheat. But watching you be incensed about his lack of loyalty, then when watching him bounce on Lafayette hit differently.

It is enthralling for me to watch you enjoy the lyricism of Washington on Your Side”!! I’ve always been a theater geek, but being a black woman raised in Oakland, I was steeped in hip-hop, so this play was the best of both of my worlds colliding, and lyrically, Washington on Your Side is one of my top 3 songs in the show. The alliteration is crazy 🤩💚💖
@cyndeliffick51702 сағат бұрын
A thought about the alliteration and rhythms of the lines-it is thought that Shakespeare uses alliteration to help the actor and the audience feel a character's emotions through the type of sound chosen for.the alliteration (or assonance.) For example , in Richard III' s first speech, he says, " Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by this son of York , and all.the clouds that loured upon our house in the deep bosom of the ocean buried." In the first line alone, there are 6 's' sounds with more to come. If articulated carefully, the audience will hear an undercurrent of snakelike spund. Elizabethans believed that snakes were associated with Satan, and Shakespeare used sound as well as words and physicality ( hunchback) to heighten the image of evil in this character. As for assonance, there are 5 words that have vowel sounds like 'ow'. 'Ow' typically indicates pain, which could be the result for being shunned for.his infirmity. It would not surprise me if LLW could be employing some of this kind of thinking, consciously or unconsciously. Anyway, sorry for the long post.

The Emperor not having clothes is a reference to a children's story. Powerful emperor is convinced he has magic clothes, most beautiful in the land, but that they are invisible. The population cows to his delusion and acts like he is wearing amazing outfits while he walks naked. It is finally a child who asks why isn't he wearing clothes and people start to accept that they have been swallowing a lie blindly rather than believing what they see. How it relates here, Jefferson is suggesting Hamilton is the Emperor and that he is not in fact all he is made out to be and Washington needs to see that too.

The Emperor's New Clothes is a fairy tale about an emperor who got swindled by scammers who claimed that they had magical thread that was so fine and valuable that it could only been seen by those worthy enough to see it. He paid them handsomely and in return they "made" him exquisite clothes that was obviously non-existent, and he, in an attempt to not appear stupid and unworthy at not being able to see them, went along with the lie assuming that everyone else could see the clothes and he paraded around butt naked. Everybody in court, also fearing that they were stupid and unworthy, and also fearing him, pretended that they could see what wasn't there and gushed about how magnificent the emperor's new clothes were. He paraded through town and everyone got caught up in the lie until a kid shouted "hey, you're naked!" and effectively popped the collective delusion and eveyeone realized their emperor was an idiot in town square with his d out. Basically, its a parable about conformity, vanity, and nobody being willing to speak truth to power.

I don't know if anyone touched upon this in previous comments, but the rivalry between Jefferson and Hamiliton is reflective of two opposing philosophies of what this nation was, and should be, and aspects of this still remains in US politics to this day. To give a very truncated summary, Jefferson represents the land-owning interests, emphasizing states'rights, and Hamiliton represents a different view, that is a federalist view. (I'd have to look this up to make sure I wasn't getting it wrong.)

Totally agree that it feels like garbage to not stand with our allies, and I also trust that someone in the comments will have a great take on this. All that said, Washington’s line, “the people are RIOTING” lives in my head 24/7 and comes out any time anyone says, “the people” in any context

@@AmariLeoneHamilton’s point was who are we standing with? The French monarchy are the ones that gave us the guns & ships. If we honored that treaty we would have been on the side of the monarchy not the people. Not very revolutionary. & Lafayette was in prison, so not exactly standing with our allies in that moment. Also, England didn’t just accept our win. They waited in the wings for us to fuck up for years hoping to retake the colonies. We had no navy and little money (Hamilton would know as the treasurer). We had few resources to help France with that wouldn’t have put us in a position to be retaken by England.

For historical context, the war they were referring to was the War of the First Coalition, which was France against Austria and Prussia. Great Britain was allied with Austria and Prussia, and supported revolts in France. The United States remained neutral in European wars until 1917 and even then only got directly involved when Germany threatened to have Mexico invade the United States.
