I want to add something to what Amartya Sen said around 13:40. Marx celebrated the victory of the north in the American civil war, not just because it abolished slavery and brought ex-slaves into the market economy, but also because a more highly developed and absolute capitalist market economy better laid the seeds for a socialist revolution in the future. The integration of the south into the capitalist economy, and the end of its status as a British economic dependency was not the end in itself for Marx. Adam Smith was indeed advocating for the liberal market economy as the end, but insofar that it was the progressive alternative to feudalism.

Maybe I'm conflating things here, but hasn't socialism failed in every country it's been tried in? To my knowledge, you're correct on all of this.

@@bobdole6640 there are many explanation for tht failure. Frankfurt critical school theories tried to explain it. One of the simple reasons has to be tht it had to work in a capitalist system, which didn't work actually.

Have Sen's thoughts had practical influences that can clearly be tied back to him and his book?

Yeap! He speaks of democracy, freedoms and rights, political inclusions, economic freedoms and we can see all these scenes unfolding in our world today.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/p6HQmXeMhNZpqas Title: Everything is square (Everything is square) First verse: Like a regular day Everything is possible, everything is square, As of today, I understood I only have one life Every second: synonymous with efficiency It's my year. I'm going to tear it all up. I'm going to chain everything I don't want to rest on my laurels As i know i will break through So everything is programmed! Chorus (twice) Despite all that I have experienced Even the unexpected is expected As in Korea Everything is square, everything is square Everything is square. And you know that! Second verse: Never snag, Always remained tactical; Everything I make, Is in the music I knew it because I sweat it, I admit, she got me Even IKEA furniture is not. In my head, everything is there, no blablabla. I have all the schematics, zero hassle. From there, I master it all! Chorus (twice) Third verse: Here is the message: Everything is square! Nothing is left, No time to let go, I grow from wise words. Listening, I learn everything, I capture everything, Even when the relay antennas are down, With my little finger, I help out End transition (twice) Everything is square, I will fix everything, Everything is square, classified business. kzbin.info/www/bejne/p6HQmXeMhNZpqas Titre: Tout est carré (Tout est carré) Premier couplet: Comme une journée réglée Tout est possible, tout est carré, Dès aujourd'hui, j'ai compris Je n'ai qu'une seule vie Chaque seconde: synonyme d'efficacité C'est mon année. The interviewer is trying to measure the amount of intellect or knowledge Amartya Sen or rather an indian has...this is purely a example of stereotype mindset...why r you even asking questions like that he is a human above all and cannot answer all his doubts..

Interesting PoV, it is appropriate to note that voices of the globe south or the local underprivileged communities are infantilized and treated in a condescending manner even in academic circles

He had mouth cancer when he was 19. He recovered after extreme amounts of radiation for which he took a risk. Quite an inspiring story it is. And regarding the wrinkles I hope you know his age... :)
