Thank you. I tried getting the plant to rebloom in so many different ways, following the advice offered on youtube and from all sorts of articles I read. Everyebody claims "ohh it is so easy" yet for me not one of the plants rebloomed with all the youtube expert advice shared so generously. The videos are incomplete, missing information, contradictory to each other and hardly anybody sepcifies the time periods necessary for any of the stages. or even the process necessary with different stages. I am very thankful for finding your video and for all fine details mentioned in it. It is nice to learn and listen to somebody who has put genuine efforts, care and love in this process and made discoveries. The explanation of keeping the plant in the box and not exposing it to any light is very helpful as well as the time period needed for it. And the fact that you keep the plant in the coat closet during dormancy period is most inspiring , most truthfully nothing yet compares to that. Much gratitude and respect

I left mine dormant till about the middle of November. Only one bloomed, but I didn't have any showing of a bloom when I pulled them out. I will attempt it again this next year using the insight you offer here. I, like you have heard many different views and gotten a lot of conflicting details on how to do the dormancy. Thanks for sharing and being so passionate over this very beautiful flower. It helps so much.

Yeah, there are lots of views on how to do dormancy. Part of what makes it hard is some people have had success with methods that aren't successful for many.

I have grown Amarylis for many years, but never tried to get it to rebloom. Well, last year I saved my bulb and am hoping 🤞🏻I get a bloom this winter. The bulb grew a lot larger during the summer, I brought it in Sept 1 and set in in the dark in my cool basement. Mid Nov I brought it out, gave it a drink and so far…nothing. Guess I need to be patient awhile longer. If it bloomsmit will be a beautiful red! I will keep you posted lol. Happy Holidays🎄

Cut Amaryllis bloom stalks can last longer in a vase than in the pot, if you pour water into the hollow cut stalk, and seal the end with a damp cotton ball or other plug. Check the stalk after a few days to empty and refill with clean water, your cut amaryllis will last a couple weeks! Great for giving flowers to someone who wouldn’t care for the whole plant. Thanks for your insights on re-blooming: Do you notice whether the plant has any live roots while blooming? Perhaps this is why wax-encased bulbs survive, until you can peel off the wax & replant.

Well, the regular unwaxed ones can go more than one year as well. The one I have currently is on its fourth year now and it was never waxed. The bulb so far hasn't gotten any extra roots other than the ball though.

In fact we are talking about Hippeastrums here. Amaryllis is from South Africa and there is just one species -Belladonna. Hippeastrums are from South and Central America and there are hundreds of different cultivars. There are different ways to plant those Hippeastrums. I never cut leaves unless they are all yellow before dormancy. Then I let them "sleep" as long as they want, I keep checking them every two weeks - some start to grow the stem, some still sleep. To have flowers, it is necessary to have at least 4 leaves the previous season, 8 leaves at least for 2 flower stems..

Been there -done that. loosing a bloom because it is top heavy. We have 12 pots, couple are for small, immature bulbs. We have 4 different colors. I do about 4 - 5 months, doing that way for years. Like you said, I check them on occasion, and when it seems right, I pull them out and give them a little water. What a TREAT when they start blooming!

My mum had a bunch of bulbs with multiple stalks of flowers every year, I took one out of a crevice in the sidewalk, repotted it, fertilized it, babies it and it never bloomed. Meanwhile the ones that stayed in the sidewalk were thriving and pumping out flowers, and my mum hadn't even looked at them in a year

A few years ago when I saw my first one I was so taken aback by their beauty I bought loads of people them as gifts, at Christmas This will be my first time to try reblooming mine. This one was had two stems with beautiful Red blooms and then blooms started to come from somewhere inside there came another two blooms came up it was so beautiful such a joy to see. ours was very top heavy too, we so we joined together plant holder ties and they supported it. Hi - I live in Malaysia with a mean temp of 30 deg celcius. It only rains or shines here. I have just planted out my bulbs, with a lot of trepidation, I must say. They were kept in my pantry for upto 10 weeks in a dark, airy basket lined with coco-fibre. Yes, I have been checking on them often enough but gosh, the leaf tip in the centre never fails to shoot out 1st! All of them. Nevertheless, I didn't want to deprive them anymore of their sustenance, so despite my misgivings, I planted them out again. For warmer climes like ours, refrigeration is best recommended of course. But I wanted to try something different, so decided the dark space in the pantry. Here's to hoping for the blooms soon :)

I live in South Louisiana, my grandma grew amaryllis and before she passed she gave me some bulbs that I put in a huge pot, for 17 years it made foliage but it never flowered, 3 years ago I left a 21 year toxic relationship and grabbed my big pot of amaryllis, 3 months later it at the end of March it bloomed for the first time!! It’s a White Christmas bulb and it’s absolutely beautiful!! This spring it shot up 2 stems with 4 flowers on each shoot, it also made at least 4 more bulbets that also made each a flower and also some deep red amaryllis bloomed for the first!! I’m not so afraid to even touch the soil, the main bulb is huge!!! It’s 6 inches round and we are now in July and it just shot up another flower!!! The huge pot is on my covered patio and doesn’t get much direct sun until later in the day. Can anyone tell me what to do?? Leave it alone or dig it up? I know it I’m gonna need to separate the new bulbets, everyone in my family wants one!! I think my grandma has had her hand in my pot for all these years!

So you are looking to move the one that's on the patio, am I reading that correctly? Either way, if you are looking to separate out the off shoot bulbs, then the easiest time to do it is after the flowering is done and when you are ready to cut back the leaves, that's when you can put the plant in stasis anyhow, so it's done gathering all its energy and won't mind being moved around as much.

@@EccentricNature Thank you so much for replying, yes I want to separate the smaller bulbs that are coming from the original White Christmas bulb, last fall I took some soil out because all my bulbs were completely covered, that’s when I seen how huge this bulb was, it’s 6 inches wide! The foliage is 2 1/2 inches wide. It just made another flower stalk which I think is very unusual given the fact they bloom in March into April. I have another question if you don’t mind answering, what is the lifespan on a single amaryllis bulb??

I guess some have their methods that might work in different climates. I find that it works best for me when I leave the leaves out in the open until they yellow and brown and want to come off anyhow.

They bloomed during the holiday season and I had no idea about the dormancy. So I never took them out of my windowsill. Are you saying that October is when we should cut the leaves back and put them into dormancy?There is really no place that is cool and dry in Texas unless it is inside our house. The time to cut them is when the leaves yellow and start dying. You want to leave the leaves on as long as possible so they can gather plenty of energy for the next year. So the actual month may very.

Hi--Love your video! You radiate personality and humor and I love that! I'm in the mid-Atlantic in a hi-rise and have been "summering" my amaryllis in its pot in a window. When I wintered it after its blooms faded in January, I just cut the leaves off and put it in a brown paper bag and stuck it in a cool place in the coat closet.... Now its time to cool it off for the fall...my questions are: do I cut off the leaves? Do I leave the roots just as they are, as i did in the winter, and put it back in the bag? And do I now or ever pull off the papery dark brown outer skins of the bulb? Thanks so much!

There are different schools of thought. But you can either completely take it out of the soil, or just put it in stasis with the soil. As for cutting the leaves, leave them on as long as possible. You don't want to cut them until they are pretty yellow and are looking like they might wanna die themselves. You want to gather as much sunlight for the following season as possible.

Many folks here plant them in ground and let them naturalize, and around February/March its not uncommon to see large beds in full bloom.

That is one way to do it, just make sure you still keep it fully covered so it's out of the light.

Hi, I air-dry them first for at least few days before wrapping them in newspapers & I tie them up in a gunny sack. Then I leave them in the lower section of the fridge for the next 6 weeks. After that you air dry again for a few days in the open & plant them up. Do not put in apples with them or the gas produced would impede the flower bud production.

I live in Ohio, my bulbs were outside in their pots all summer to get plenty of sun. I may have only fertilized them once, didn’t know any better. I stopped watering them in August but left them outside in the shade till it got cold out. Now it’s November, I haven’t put them in the dark yet, their leaves are long and just as green as ever! Should I put them in a cool dark place with all those leaves?

Really, you don't have to put it away just yet. Like I said, I find it better to wait until the leaves start turning. Of course, at this point in the year, if they aren't getting much light, some will say it doesn't make much difference. But I personally lean towards gathering as much energy as possible. I still have mine out as well, it has been losing leaves slowly though, so it's time for stasis is coming quickly.

The dormancy period is when all the leaves are gone and its down to just a bulb. So the dormancy really starts when you cut off all the leaves.

Yes, 50 to 60 degrees F is best. You can leave it out as long as possible until the leaves turn yellow and wilt. You really want to let it do so as you're gathering as much energy as possible for the next season.

It doesn't have to be direct sun. In fact too much direct can lead to the leaves being damaged. The main thing is getting lots of light so you are storing lots of energy for the next season.

I was waiting for the leaves to turn brown and cut them off. Is it best to cut them while still healthy? Most of my bulbs will regrow leaves after dormancy but not bloom stocks.

You are right. I like waiting till the last minute and just pulling them off when dead or cutting them after brown.

It varies slightly depending on region and when your leaves yellow and wilt. Mine usually goes dormant in the winter.

About sun. I live in South Arkansas. It gets hot here in summer. Do I protect it from full sun?! My Christmas Cactus I leave out all summer, it gets morning sun and some afternoon sun and it just thrives. What about Amaryllis in sun??

Cactus would do good as succulents are all generally great in full sun. Too much directly sunlight can lead to burn on amaryllis though. So it would be best to get it some kind of partial shade.

Sometimes, even when you think you've done everything right, it can not bloom. If you don't change the soil out every year, you might give that a try, give it a little extra nutrients.

Hi! I live in Dallas TX where nobody has a basement. I have a sunroom but I don't have a cool spot in the house; we keep the home temperature around 70F in the summer. I do own a small refrigerator but that may be too cold for a dormant amaryllis. Any suggestions on finding a cool spot for dormancy? Thank you so much.

Oh wow! That is a little tough. The best thing you can do is find the most secluded spot that isn't getting any heat and cover it appropriately as I mentioned in the video. Other things you can do to cool the area are put some cold water, ice or a cold rag nearby. You'll just have to change it out occasionally. Just be careful you're not doing it on the box itself and causing lots of moisture to get into the amaryllis.

received my amaryllis fist of december. it is just now losing its blooms dec 21! the instructions say to remove wax from bulb (shipped not in soil or pot)! any suggestions on how to remove the wax from bulb! also can you give any timeframe for the steps as i'm in zone5/6T thank you for any info in advance!

To remove the wax just start where there in a bit of an indentation in the wax. Should be easier to break through and pull it off from there. Once you break through the wax seal it should be pretty easy to peel off. There will be a wire base at the bottom most likely you'll have to pull out. But just go for it. As for your zone, you shouldn't be too far off from my time frame. Like I said in the video, leave it 6 weeks, check it. If you see the bloom stock growing out already, you can take it out. Otherwise put it back and give it another week or two before checking again. :)

How do the leaves look? Are they yellowing yet? If you cut them early before they've gathered enough sunlight, it will likely not give you a bulb the following year.

From Oshawa Ontario, (now its January 2021) I have an white amaryllis that bloomed with 2 stalks and 4 blooms each stalk. There are already 5 tall leaves, but 4 are droopy. What will I expect to see from them leaving the bulb in sunlight for 4-5 months? Just bigger taller leaves? Then into the dark, cutting back the leaves, waiting to see if new bloom starts, 4-5 months? so these bulbs only bloom around fall to winter?

It actually can vary from plant to plant when they bloom. Mine is currently on a winter cycle where it is in stasis now for a couple more weeks. As for the leaves, they usually do just get nice and big. If they are getting droopy, check to see how well you are watering the plant. They should remain green and strong for quite a long time before they start turning yellow and falling off. You do as I say in the video want to cut back the stalk as soon as the flowers are done so you can put all the energy into the leaves.

Noooo! You don’t cut the leaves off! You let the leaves die back naturally and turn brown completely. This puts the energy right back into the bulb.

I can't remember what all I said, but I do let them go as long as I can. These days I do let them just get to the point where you can pull them off after they've died.
