My passion for amaryllis started as a young girl and the obsession has been growing ever since. My grandma always had a multitude of amaryllis blooming for the holidays. She would display some with houseplants, place single bulb pots in visitor's bedrooms, and give dozens away as Christmas gifts.
When I first started growing amaryllis, I would purchase boxed grow kits from the local Tractor and Supply. These kits included dehydrated coco coir, a plastic pot, and a small amaryllis bulb. Generally, these small bulbs produced only one or two flowering stalks. But, as my passion for amaryllis grew, I started to invest in larger bulbs.
Amaryllis bulbs are sold in centimeters which is the measurement around the widest part of the bulb. I prefer to purchase 34/36 or 38/40 cm bulbs whenever possible. Larger bulbs will produce more flowers and have thicker, stronger stems than their smaller counterparts. Infact, I've had some 38 cm bulbs put out five flowering stems. These jumbo amaryllis bulbs are a full year older than smaller bulbs and will be slightly more expensive. In my opinion it’s completely worth the extra cost.
Most amaryllis bulbs come from Peru, South Africa, Brazil (Southern Hemisphere) or Holland (Northern Hemisphere). These bulbs naturally flower according to their country of origins calendar. Southern hemisphere bulbs are groomed for immediate performance and will bloom just 4-6 weeks after planting. You will often see these amaryllis listed as “Early Blooming” or “Christmas Flowering.”
However, amaryllis bulbs grown in the northern hemisphere (Holland) will generally bloom 8-12 weeks after planting. If you want to hold amaryllis bulbs, it’s best to use Northern Hemisphere bulbs.
Planting amaryllis bulbs is a fun, quick, and easy endeavor. Amaryllis bulbs prefer to be relatively tight in their pots so choose a container that's approximately 2 inches wider than your bulb. A heavy container with a drainage hole will keep the display from toppling over and from becoming waterlogged.
Fill your container halfway full of high quality premoistened potting soil. Set the bulb on top the soil and fill in around the bulb with more potting soil leaving the top 1/3 of the bulb exposed.
After your bulbs are planted water around the perimeter bulb. Then keep the soil barely moist, applying approximately 1/2 cup of water per week. Place your pots in a warm area (68-70°F) with bright, indirect light and watch them grow and bloom!
Bonus Tip! A 2013 study by Cornell and Kansas State University concluded that soaking amaryllis roots in room temperature water for 12 hours prior to planting resulted in more rapid and uniform early leaf growth, and greater overall early vigor. Read the full study HERE.
Reblooming an amaryllis bulb for future holidays is easier than it sounds. As with other flower bulbs, amaryllis use their leaves to produce energy for next year’s flowers. If you want them to rebloom at a certain time you will need to control their calendar. To have your amaryllis flower again at Christmas follow these steps.
After blooming, grow your amaryllis as a houseplant for the rest of winter and spring. Give it plenty of light inside the home and keep it watered. After all danger of frost has passed move the pot outside for the summer. The bulb should stay dry, and the soil should be barely moist -- never soggy. If your summers are wet, you may need to shield the pot from excessive rain.
In late summer, stop watering and move the potted bulb to a cool (50-55°F), dark, dry location. An unheated basement is ideal. The leaves will gradually wither as the plant goes dormant. Leave the bulb alone and don’t water them for 2-3 months.
After dormancy, bring the bulbs back into a warm area with bright light. Remove all the dead foliage, top dress the bulb with fresh soil, and water well to wake up the bulbs.
Amaryllis bulbs increase in diameter as they age and may need repotted every three to four years. To repot, remove the bulb from the container and gently shake off excess soil. Remove the dry scales and repot into the next size pot.
Ideally, you want to bring the bulbs out of dormancy 8-12 weeks before you want them to rebloom. Therefore, if you want an amaryllis to be in bloom on Christmas day you would put them into dormancy in August, take them out of dormancy in October, and they should rebloom in late December/early January. Naturally, there are variables, but this is the calendar that has given me the best success rate for subsequent holiday blooms.

@@manishhkr I have a lemon and lime amaryllis from Thompson and Morgan, the old bulb has never grown in size instead it has had many small bulbs grow from it. It only flowers every other year now and it’s flowers are smaller but I will always keep it as my mother gave it to me before she died. I think it’s success is due to I never cut its leaves off until the bulb sheds them itself.

I too live in TN. East TN. My 50 or so were gifted to me from my neighbors bed. His beds run up the sides of his entire driveway. You couldn't even tell any were gone when I took mine! I first put them in a whiskey barrel a lot of them bloomed that first year. He never did anything to his oner winter or anything so I didn't either. Sitting up on that deck in a planter was not the place😢😢😢i think one huge bulb made it. I went the next spring and got more. I put them into a bed close to the house. We had a terrible snow storm and several days that were going to be less than 10 degrees. I ran out in the snow, determined not to loose them this year. Dug every one up and put in my bathtub. They stayed there for couple of months, and to my shock, bloomed beautifully. I put them back out and i only had one that has bloomed this year. It had 2 flower stalks on it. Lots of wide healthy looking green leaves though, so know most of them survived. I like the idea of potting them up better as well. Seems to show them off more.❤

I am thrilled to have found your channel! Have always loved amaryllis, but mistakenly believed once bloomed it was difficult to get them to rebloom. Well….no longer! It is ON! I saved 2 gorgeous picotee bulbs from last Christmas and set them out all summer. They are now hibernating in my basement. This year, I may have over done it with bulbs…..I’ve combined 3 red lions in a huge put with several house plants and poinsettias surrounding them. I have potted up white amaryllis and am trying 3 amaryllis bulbs in specific soilless, grow vases meant for them. And I’m giving them as gifts to almost everyone. Phew!!! Is that too much? 🤣😂🤣. Never! Been hunting for different varieties in various nurseries as well. This is just so much fun! Thank you for your enthusiasm ! Merry Christmas to you.

I am JUST as excited about Amaryllis as you! I have successfully put them dormant, re bloomed them and basically have learned they are tough as nails. I am in the Pacific Northwest. I have had them bloom in the middle of summer outside (first time this year) and that was TOTALLY exciting! Before I knew anything I just knew they needed to have a dormant period and I uprooted them, wrapped in brown paper until the stalks dried up, then re potted and lo and behold they bloomed just PERFECTLY. So it was a permanent relationship after that. I will use your method this year and just let them dry in their pots in my husbands shop where its dark and cool. So FUN. I have new babies that I have had long enough to bloom and that really is ADDICTING. Love your video! Thank you!

I did get inspired by your video with you plans for the mantle piece and the one you did with the Pointsettias too. So I made a bowl of those 3 Amaryllis plus 3 Pointsettias AND I put 3 Paperwhites in the center. The paperwhites are very tall with buds on them, it’s my first time with these as well. Hi Danielle, I want to tell you thank you! I appreciate the time that you've taken to teach me so much! My first career was in speech pathology. I decided to work as a speech therapist with Texas public schools. Then I experienced health problems that interfered with my career and hence my retirement. During those 30 years my love of growing plants developed as a way to connect with my grandfather that was a farmer. It was a great experience as I was growing up to help granddaddy around on the farm. I apologize for diving deep into my history but I think it's a nice foundation into who I am. I live in zone 8a. And I realize that I need to make adjustments from your zone to my zone. The good news is that you have inspired me to begin my flower farm this upcoming season. It's a little scary because I'm single after a devastating divorce but I love growing veggies and flowers! Plus, I felt that Amaryllis was out of reach due to my beginner skill level but after this video, I will give it a try! I have searched for a mentor but it hasn't materialized yet. In addition, I was also inspired with the idea of giving from the video that you shared with your guest. I already had that plan but it helped me to focus on working out the details! Thank you again for your encouragement & guidance! 🙏🏼 I would love to keep you posted, if you are available. 💞🌹 Best wishes, Shelley

There is something magical about bulbs that can be grown inside. I have definitely caught amaryllis fever from your previous videos! I had questions about daughter bulbs because I have several on my, still dormant, bulbs and I wasn’t sure when and how I should separate them. I also had questions about cutting the flower stalks to put in a vase. You answered every question!

You were one of the first KZbinrs that got me curious about growing and reblooming these beauties. I've gone from 2 to 7 Amaryllis ( 3 of those are offsets) in 3 years. I bought inexpensive kits and it's been so exciting to beef up those bulbs and have them rebloom. Placing them into the garden for the summer vs leaving in pots sure did put on more grow. Also I use a slow release bloom fertilizer now as soon as they come out of dormancy to help them recharge for next season's blooms. Thank you for sharing your passion.

I love you enthusiasm for this flower. I first learned of this flower in a book I was listening to and was intrigued enough to look it up. I love the many different lilies and have several but there is something about these that amaze me. They are like hope that springs to life out of nothing from within their bulb with just a little love and care. The delightful and passionate way you talk and present these flowers comes through in this video. Simple put I was only curious and enchanted but now even more enamored by this flower after watching you speak and share your knowledge about them and your passion for them. Thank you so much!!

I grew a beautiful pink and white double Nymph amaryllis for my Mom and sister for Christmas this year. It made my Mom so happy to watch the bulb grow, she told me that instead of buying her gifts or presents in the future, she'd prefer I give her an amaryllis. Its an easy, inexpensive, but beautiful gift that gives the recipients so much pleasure !

Great video Danielle . I find it so interesting that we here Down Under - have our Amaryllis available and blooming in Dec/Jan - but here it is Summer and u r in winter and snow ! Altho I guess u r growing them inside as well as we do - so the indoor temps would be the same :) They are like $20 US per bulb here.

Danielle you are so great at teaching us! This video inspires me to keep my two bulbs for next year. Now that I understand what to do I should have more success than other years. I think I may even have a baby growing too...I saw that there was a stem growing on the outside of the bulb so I'm so excited! I hope my bulbs also grow bigger in size. Do you know how many years a bulb can live?
