Going out on a limb by saying Hendrix had no idea that in 50 years people would perform psychoanalysis on the note he hits when he broke a string, but we’re all here for it.

Was at the show, 1/1/70. Five of us went down to the fillmore. Got single tickets in seperate rows nothing worse than 15th row center. Watched Jimi go off stage, change the string and walked back on tuning his guitar. Who Knows and Machine Gun wrere on the original Band of Gypsys album. I got listen to the whole show on Songs For Groovy Children 5 CD set. Still gives me chills knowingI was there. Just another of many great show I saw at the Fillmore.

Very cool I love Hendrix stories like yours I would end up at work or party meet older dudes who seen hendrix.. I was still highschool early 80s. Usually the stories varied but similar. On girl I knew told me her parents met first time Jimi Hendrix show. She said they jump in a pool. I knew exactly the hollywood bowl. She always overheard heard her parents tell this story to people who came to her house when she was growing up. She said they had BLAST that night Jimi Hendrix concert!

@@dannyhood4007Many years ago I played with a drummer who played with Jimi one time. This guy was like 17 yrs old around 69-70 when he went on the road with a band. They were in Nashville doing some shows and one night they decided to go down to a big studio where one of them had done some session work and see if they could hang out, play etc. Shortly after they got there in walks Jimi with his usual entourage of hangers on. So he got to jam w Jimi for 2 hours. Imagine having that on your resume.

Over 40 years I have met and heard plenty of guitar players, experienced players. The bar has always been does your own material command respect from your peers and does it stand the test of time, against the pantheon of storytellers who play guitar. Very few have been able to do this as a guitar player and shine long term. Professionals musicians often forget (conveniently) that it is the visionary in music that dictates ultimate direction, not proficiency at a instrument. Peace.

I drove from Wash DC to Baltimore to see Hendrix at a large auditorium. It's was Mother's Day, and just prior to the set, Hendrix said, "any one of you pretty girls who want to be a mother, come see me backstage." He played without antics. It was with Band of Gypsies. He barely sang, ...just mostly stood and looked at the guitar neck and played in his excellent style. ...was probably zoned on heroin.

I was a junior in high school 1967/68? on a date to see Jimi Hendrix. and the front band Cream. in Dallas. This was the first time I actually saw hippies at a concert.. They were people with ragged jeans and barefooted, I wasn't horrified. I was intrigued! And sure enough, I was soon to follow that stylish trend.. but getting back to Jimi, there was a wall and I mean a wall of stacked Marshall amps across the stage So cream came out and did their thing. Playing sunshine of your love Etcetera which in itself was incredible. Then afterwards, Jimi finally comes out with the guys. and as he proceeds to go into this first number. he stops.. Apparently he's hearing noise in the background and. in taking a mic back there we all realized they were picking up the control tower from Love Field Airport ! It took them awhile, but they got the issue corrected. I just. wonder if the control tower would have heard Jimi once he cranked it up. I'll never forget that concert.. Within the next month, I saw the Doors and Led Zeppelin on their first American tour In Dallas. Those were the days buddy! I'm now 72 and play guitar every day !!!

That's a great memory! We grew up in a great era as far as music goes. I need to follow your example and start playing every day! My parents would have never let me go to a concert at that age. I'm a couple years younger than you, but didn't see my first concert until high school...Allman Brothers in Tampa Stadium. Might have been 6 months after Zeppelin drew 70k in the stadium. A lot of great memories. I remember paying $17 to see the Stones in Orlando and thinking it was outrageous lol. Wonder if they've raised their price since then? Saw SRV years later in a small club of less than 100 people touring his first LP. What a show. I actually had a friend whose mother took her to Jax to see the Monkees as a kid...with of course, the famous pairing of Hendrix opening lol. Those stories can never happen again with corporate rock being the norm. Be well💪💪 & Rock on brother

THANKYOU! One of the few things my dad left me was a vinyl of this FIllmore East gig and as far as I'm concerned it has always been the real Hendrix to my ears rather than the usual stuff people always refer back to that also made him famous. So many points in this performance are just WTF moments.. like one note in machine gun, still gives me chills each time I hear it. Also I think this record is a great example of the Hendrix that I always used to hear could imitate real life with guitar and the machine gun performance does just that. If you love that album, check out the rest of those concerts (4 in total) called "Live At The Fillmore East" released as a double album by his estate in the late 90s/early 2000s. I'm glad you told the story of the album. Hendrixs 1969 was a turbulent one, as I'm sure you're aware. These concerts were almost cathartic in nature. It's just a damn shame what happened at MSG 31/01/1970, which led to the break up of that band. As for my favourite Hendrix concert. It is Monterrey Pop 1967. I just love the energy he brought that night, everything so new and exciting. (BTW legend goes Bill Graham goaded Hendrix into playing without "the gimmicks" hence his performance on the 2nd show, just standing still and playing.)

Even as a kid I could tell the difference in Jimi's playing on this album. I don't know if Billy Graham is to thank, but it's awesome. I sort of assumed Jimi was leaving the flashy presentation behind because he wanted to be taken more seriously as a guitarist, or that he was taking himeslf more seriously. That's just my own conjecture. I didn't know that he was fullfilling some crazy contract. Very interesting. All that being said, his playing on the album is really phnemomenal. That whole vibe and/or octavia thing, Jimi owns it. I don't know anybody who plugs that in and doesn't start aping Hendrix licks or straight up plays some Hendrix. It's like it became a Guitar Law. lol

I've built a number of octave-up fuzzes for myself, including clones of the Roger Mayer Octavia and the Tychobrahe Octavia, the Foxx Tone Machine, Green Ringer, Univox Superfuzz, Kay Fuzz and several others (sadly, no Fender Blender). My favorite is probably the Foxx, because the octave is so robust and reliable. But the Tychobrahe, which uses a transformer, comes in a close second. As your playing illustrates, the Tychobrahe design can have a more ragged, muscular and "rude" sound. One of the things that doesn't get talked about much with octave-up pedals is that if you turn the gain down somewhat, use the bridge pickup, and pick close to the bridge, you can get a passable "electric sitar" sound.

Whatever the reason Jimi dialed down all the show moves circa late 69 into 1970 it really helped his live playing imoho. ‘Band of Gypsies’ was the first time i really enjoyed his live playing and it continued on with ‘Jimi Plays Berkeley’. I get that the show and spectacle of his earlier years helped make him a star (and a favorite of rock photographers) but I much prefer his playing during what sadly turned out to be his final year. Wish I’d gotten into BoG more when it came out, I might have tried harder to see Jimi live. By the time Plays Berkeley was released it was too late

Unfortunately, he had a lot of distractions quietly raging below the surface of his precious mind. Numero uno being his desire to spent most, if not all of his time in a studio, not on the road at mj's slavish behest. Fans missed out big time there. We are left to surmise Jimi's potential output. Skychurch is where Jimi wanted to go, which to my old ears sounds like 90% in a studio with an open air amphitheatre nearby to present the creations of his and the Skychurch band. An amphitheatre where he could control what time he got on stage. Not the shambolic way Woodstock was run. At places like Woodstock Jimi was forced to go with the flow. Irrespective of his opinion he still presented an unforgettable performance. However, he tired of touring. In some instances he was forcibly reminded of his contractual obligations to touring to get him to the airport in time for the next gig. Unbeknownst to Jimi the bulk of payments tied Jimi up in schemes of mj's creation that committed Jimi to having to work non-stop the mj way. Therefore, no time for Jimi to realise his dreams. A greater miscarriage of an individual's creative rights was never more abused than Jimi's.

6:08, people always were expecting the 'really big show' from Jimi and evidently that detracted from his playing, Bill Graham had ESP when it came to performers, that was tough love but man was he right, Jimi delivered the goods for sure

I hitch-hiked to see Hendrix in DC when I was 15 years old. Huge fan and Band of Gypsie's still blows my mind. Love your rendition. Favorite tuber.

I drove from Wash DC to Baltimore to see Hendrix at a large auditorium. I was around 20 and drunk (haven't drunk alcohol since then).

It was Dec , 1969... I had just turned 16, having returned to Staten Island after living in Germany for the prior 3 years. My neighbor, a great guy named Bill Boyle, came to me and said "I got two tickets to the Hendrix concert on New Years Eve.... wanna go?".... My folks said "no way".... Anyhow... I bought the album to see what I missed.... Bill had a great night.

This dude with his glass of water about to fall on all the electronics is a great reference for gear history and more. I made a lot of research in my life and I still learn from him. Josh Smith for the way he adjusts amp knobs the sweet spot, Scott Henderson for pickups adjustment in conjunction with knob level, Micheal Landau with his tone obsession. I like how Joe Satriani exploit gear too. Old school tone stuff is cool.

B.O.J. is the best live album ever recorded. The funk they ripped out, was sheer insanity. The solo in Machine Gun, can't be beaten.

I used .012-.054 strings on my Les Paul when I gigged all the time because I have heavy right and left hand technique, plus more adrenaline when playing live, but now I'm down to .011-.052 playing with a Digitech Trio+ at home. I also have a cheap, but good sounding guitar with .012-.054 on it to keep my strength up. I can't play guitars with .008's or .009's anymore.

........i thought i would never hear myself say this but I was glad Jimi broke that string.......one of those unexpected moments that made things better by accident ..thats one of the most iconic Drum and Bass guitar groove in music history,.....and it was one of Buddy's best scat singing performances.........but when Jimi comes back ......he plays the greatest octavia solo of all time to make up for breaking a string......the funny part is Buddy heard Jimi step on a pedal...so Buddy start singing wah wah sounds......so Jimi turned on the octavia instead....😆

Thank you for this❗️I was 12 when the AYE album came out, which I bought-I’d already heard some songs from it on the radio up in Great Falls, Montana, no less, and he became my favorite musical artist from them on. It wasn’t just the mind-blowing guitar playing, but grew to include his amazing songwriting (totally unique song structures and lyrics), his arranging, production and, yes, vocals❗️ I own a couple of different DVDs of the Band of Gypsies concerts, and I never thought to notice the lack of theatrics-his playing was totally captivating by itself. I learned about you from Rick Beato, and I’m subscribing to your channel today. Thanks❗️
